GRATITUDE
I AM EXTREMELY GRATEFUL to my aunt Debbie Bushey. This book wouldn’t have been possible without all of her care and support. I am also thankful to my husband for believing in me. I wouldn’t have gotten this done if he didn’t have faith in me.
PREFACE
T HE REASON WHY I wrote this book is to share with you some of the struggles that come with epilepsy. Of course, all of us are different. Let’s look at it like this. We may wear the same shoes, but we don’t all wear the same size. We just need to walk together to know that we are not alone. This is regarding all disabilities. We can work together to overcome the obstacles that come w ith our disor ders. We can learn from one another and look at all of it with a positive attitude.
I know that it isn’t easy for any of us. I myself have had a difficult time getting to where I am today. We can do it! We cannot let this disorder or any type of illness get the best of us.
Oh yeah, one more thing that inspired me to write this book is when God brought it to my attention. So let’s look at it today as a new day and live it as if it were our last. It is healthy for us to let go of the past and focus on the future. Let’s just give it to God and trust that he will take care of us.
INTRODUCTION
A S YOU ARE reading this, you are probably curious of who is explaining his/her experience. If we were meeting in person, I would introduce myself like this: Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Stephanie. I am a f orty-three-year -old woman who has epilepsy.
I have had surgeries—one on the right temporal lobe and also on the left. I will explain more later. I was eighteen years old at the time of the accident. I had a seven-month-old child.
I am writing this book for those of you who want to understand, care to learn about, and be able to relate to this disability and the difficulties that come with it.
Although this book is about me and the troubles I have had, it is for you or someone you may know who suffers with epilepsy. Who knows, maybe even some doctors and nurses will learn from this. People will not know or understand what we are going through unless we explain it. The more that we share, the more they will learn.
I am definitely not a writer. I don’t even read books. I am having a hard time comprehending what I read. This has been a problem all my life, but now it is much more difficult.
CHAPTER 1
How It All Began
W HEN I WAS eighteen years old, I came into some money and my first thought was to buy a car. I had a driver’s license, but I had never owned a car.
Luckily, I only live a mile or two away from a dealership, so on my
