    Dedication

I dedicate this second edition of Blessings in the Book: A Study Guide for the Book of Revelation to all my fellow teachers, facilitators, and students of the Good News of Jesus Christ as found in the book of Revelation.

As you peruse and study this enhanced volume, may your heart be stirred to feast on the Word and share it with renewed passion and exuberance. We know that the Second Coming of our Lord is nearer than when we first believed. Therefore, let us be about our Father’s business as we strive to enhance the kingdom of God, telling a dying world that Jesus is indeed coming back again just as He said He would.

    Preface

The mandate to teachers of the Word is to declare the everlasting, indisputable, unchangeable truth of scripture and do so with anointing, power, and clarity. The reality of our Lord’s Second Coming excites the spirits and stirs the hearts of believers the world over. Christians are filled with eager anticipation as they look forward to that blessed hope, to the time when our Lord will reign forever. Jesus is coming back, and we are convinced it won’t be long.

We are living in the last days. Most of us have heard that statement ever since we first accepted the Lord as Savior and became aware of His Second Coming. This amazing truth resounded in the hearts and minds of the disciples and believers of the early church as well. They were curious and concerned about knowing the signs of His coming and of the end of the world.

Jesus did not rebuke or berate them for inquiring about this important topic. Rather, He gave them detailed instructions, cautionary words of wisdom, and some of the most specific information ever given about the Tribulation, His Second Coming, and what they could expect in the last days (Matt. 24:3ff; John 14:1–3).

This desire to know also permeated the congregations of new believers as represented throughout the New Testament. The apostle Paul said that he would not have them to be ignorant concerning the things of the end times (1 Thess. 4:13). God wants His people to know and be acutely aware of the signs of the times. He does not want us to be caught off guard and taken by surprise like a thief in the night (1 Thess. 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10). But this is not to say we should stray into the folly of trying to establish dates and attempting to learn things God has not chosen to reveal (Matt. 24:36; Mark 13:32).

During John’s island experience, God used him to take this quest for answers to a new level. He utilized powerful and descriptive apocalyptic imagery and phenomenal, prophetic events as he toured the heavens with his personal angelic guides.

The apostles Peter and Paul and others spoke and wrote about His Second Coming; but in the book of Revelation, the apostle John takes us there not only in words but also in vivid, living color as given by God Himself. The message went from God to Jesus and then to the angel, to John, and to us, the church (Rev. 1:1), but it lost nothing in transition. Rather, the Word gained a spiritual momentum that remains and inspires believers to this day.

The challenges the church faces in the twenty-first century are the same as those faced by the first-century church—to remain vigilant, sober, and on fire for the Lord. Unlike the churches at Ephesus and Laodicea, we must be found loving Him as we did when we first met Him lest we be like those described by the apostle Peter who mocked the believers and the Word of God asking rhetorically, "Where is the promise of His coming? …
