    Love at First Sight

I grew up as an adolescent in 3820 Robinson Street, SE, Washington, DC, in 1969. It was the first time I ever met her, and some would say it was love at first sight. Yes, I was seven years old. It was summertime, and we were outside playing. I knew the moment I saw her I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life. I know what you are thinking, What does a seven-year-old know about love or anything for that matter? But it was a summer I’ll never forget. I asked her, What is your name?

She told me, Mellissa, and I said, Can I have a chance?

That was what you would ask a girl if you liked her back in the day or write a letter to her saying, Do you like me? Yes or no, with two square boxes, and she would either check yes or no.

Anyway, so she said yes, and we were inseparable from then on. After school, we would play tag or hide-and-seek and other games, and if I caught her, she would have to kiss me. By then, my older siblings found out and started teasing me, You got a girlfriend, you got a girlfriend, so I begged them not to tell my mom. We used to talk about what we wanted to be when we grew up and where we wanted to live. In my world, we were already married and in love.

One day, she wanted to be a famous movie star and move to Hollywood, and of course, I wanted to be an NBA basketball player. I wanted to be like Dr. J. By this time, I was about nine years old, and we were both in the fourth grade. I was best friends with her big brother, so we all hung out together, played together, and ate dinner at one another’s houses. Back then, the parents thought it was cute for us to be boyfriend and girlfriend. They never took us seriously. To them, it was just a phase—puppy
