    Bibliography

To the church of Jesus Christ, to my fellow African theologians, and to all children of God struggling with understanding this phenomenon, the subject of the Holy Spirit.

This work cannot be attributed to me alone. It is a reality today because of the synergistic work of many hands and minds. First, I appreciate my academic mentor, Rev. Kennedy Muturi, who helped me start my theological education at Nairobi Pentecostal Bible College. He inspired me to study and even paid part of my fees. Thank you so much, Teacher Muturi.

I am forever grateful to Dr. Isaiah Majok Dau, bishop and general overseer of Pentecostal Church of South Sudan. You worked hard to get me a scholarship from the United Kingdom. May God Bless the women in the mission from the United Kingdom who paid my fees at NPBC.

I am grateful to Dr. Gitau for helping me through the application process to Memphis Theological Seminary. Dr. Gitau, you made the daunting task of application less stressful.

I appreciate Dr. Barry Anderson, who facilitated my admissions to Memphis Theological Seminary.

Thanks to Dr. Father John Stygles, who helped me through the integration process and lived with me as brother. He spent his hard-earned money on my life and worked hard to ensure I got a small job in his office.

I can’t forget the great work of Dr. Crutchfield, who supervised my master’s thesis and encouraged me to keep writing.

I appreciate my friends at MTS, who paid part of my tuition at seminary.

I appreciate so much the spiritual help of the late Dr. David Boyle and Dr. Keith Norman. These wonderful servants of God helped me have a home church in the name of First Baptist, Broad Church in Memphis, Tennessee.

May God bless Barnados Sapata family for your great support.

I appreciate my brothers, David and James, who paid another part of my seminary tuition fees and my personal needs.

I am also grateful to God for connecting me with Rev. Stephen and Lillian Wanjohi, my mentors and co-workers in ministry. I can’t repay all that you have done in my life and family.

To my wife, and soul mate, Lucy; you encouraged me to write even when I felt exhausted. May God bless you so much. My children, John Joseck, Betty Rebecca, and Myles Joseck Jr.—I pray that you will do much more than your mum and I have done.

I am always intrigued by the love and wisdom of my mama, who took me to church early enough and intoxicated me with the worldview of God as the single source of everything on planet earth. Thanks, Beatrice.

Above all, I thank my only source of hope and help, God, who gave me Jesus and the Holy Spirit and who enabled me to do what I couldn’t have done without him. Lord, you alone are my strength and hope. I perform at your audience alone.

    Preface

This book is a result of many searching questions that flooded my mind after changing my church membership from the Anglican Church to the Full Gospel Churches of Kenya. During this time, the Full Gospel Church taught that it was only they who enjoyed and knew the Holy Spirit. The other churches didn’t know the Holy Spirit, and so they couldn’t make it to heaven, because they had rejected the only Spirit of God who could lead them there.

The reason for these intriguing questions was the love I have for my mother. She has been an Anglican member and has never spoken in tongues. The fact that she couldn’t speak in tongues would have earned her condemnation from those who could in Pentecostal churches. I had to struggle with that discomfort because I knew, then and now, how committed she was with her faith. I occasionally heard people who openly declared people like
