    INTRODUCTION

In this book, we are going to look at an important aspect of the body of Christ in the church that has not been taken very seriously and has been misconstrued or misinterpreted, thereby misleading believers, who are sometimes short-sighted as to the faith they profess. When we are not properly taught in regards to a given subject or biblical beliefs, we tend to have a wrong interpretation of the subject, and in most cases we pass on our beliefs to people that are either young in the faith or not well grounded in that particular area. This book will help give us more insight in the areas of the Holy Sacrament.

    CHAPTER 1

    THE BREAD AND THE WINE

For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me. (1 Cor. 11:23–24)

The breaking of bread refers to the Last Supper, the Eucharist, the Holy Sacrament, also called the Holy Communion or the Lord’s Supper. This is a Christian ordinance that our Lord Jesus instructed His disciples to do in remembrance of Him.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and of prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42–47)

This tells us that something happens when believers break bread; there is an addition to the body of Christ when there is constant communion. This fellowship, this sweet communion, propels us to tell others the benefits of accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and personal saviour. You don’t want to keep something so good and beneficial to yourself. The Lord commanded us to spread the good news, and this good news we should spread—nothing more, nothing less. With the early believers, it was a common practice; they fellowshipped together and had almost everything in common, which is different from what we practice today. For example, a member of the congregation may not have come to church for a while, yet no one in the church seemed to be able to give account of the member’s whereabouts. It shows no one cared enough to find out why this person had not been in attendance, which is rather sad if we say we practice true Christianity. Actually, true Christianity is living the life that Jesus lived, and it should be replicated in every believer. Inasmuch as we declare and say we are praying for each other, we should have a measure of compassion within us and care for one another because we follow after our master, Jesus Christ.

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him. (Acts 10:38)

If we claim to be followers of Jesus and have the Holy Spirit in us, we should be able to reflect the personality and characteristics of Jesus Christ. He has commanded us in partaking in the breaking of bread so that we will be aligned to His purpose in our lives and our purpose in this world through fellowship. In order to fulfil all that His word says concerning us, we must follow the instructions of the word of God.

For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. (1 Cor. 11:29)

They ate and Drank Judgement on Themselves

Apostle Paul talks about without discerning(without being sensitive or perceiving). That is, they ate and drank without a full comprehension of the communion. This practice has caused so many in the body of Christ to be disadvantaged; instead of them being in an advantageous position, they become deprived (weaklings, sickly, slow in perceiving the things of God’s Spirit). This is not God’s purpose for the believer.

In my bid to writing this book, I did a little bit of study about how well-informed believers are as to the breaking of bread, and I was amazed that although some have been born again
