Timmy Introduces Himself
Hello! Hello! It is so nice to meet you! My name is Timmy. What is your name? Do you want to take me for a walk? I really, really want to go for a walk. Do you want to take me for a walk? I promise I will behave. I know how to SIT. I know how to STAY. I know how to SPEAK! WOOF, WOOF! Please, please, please take me for a walk.
This is what Timmy barked when anyone visited the shelter where he lived. He was just so happy to see everyone. His tail wagged so much it felt like he was going to wag it right off - along with the rest of his backside. And his tongue hung out of his mouth. He simply could not seem to control it. He was just so happy to see visitors! He couldn’t help it.
Timmy climbed up the sides of his cage, turning this way and that, saying Look at me, look at me! I am a very good dog! Please take me for a walk. Please take me home!
Truly, that is what he was really saying, Please take me home with you!
Do you know what else he was saying when his tail was wagging, and his backside was falling off, and his tongue was hanging out of his mouth, and he was climbing up the sides of the cage and turning this way and that? He was trying to tell anyone who visited how much he loved them! I Love you! I Love You!
he was saying as he wagged and jumped.
Timmy always woke up with joy! He wondered, did everyone wake up with joy? He surely did. He was so happy. Happy, happy, happy. And do you know why he was always happy? Because he knew that every new day may be the very day he would get adopted, and he would get to go home with someone nice, someone who would love him as much as he loved them, that is why he was always so happy!
Do you know what a rescue dog is? A rescue dog is what he was back then because someone found him and brought him to the shelter.
He didn’t know how he got lost. One minute he was with his brothers and sisters, following his nose, just behaving like a normal puppy. The next minute he was lost and could not find his way home.
He was running along, smelling the hedges, the grass, and flowers and investigating every new rock and tree. Following his nose, he did not realize how far away he had wandered.
Suddenly, he felt very hungry and knew it was about time to go home. He turned around and his brothers and sisters were gone! He searched and searched for them sniffing the air, hoping to pick up their scent. The day got later and later, darker and darker. The wind started to blow. It became very cold. And Timmy was getting soaking wet because it started to rain. He was sad, cold, wet, hungry and very lonely.
A man named Mike found him wandering around all alone in the rain, and he brought him to the shelter. A very nice lady named Penny took one look at him and told him he had to take a bath! He was not sure he liked baths. But the warm water felt good, and the big towel was soft and felt good, and he shook all his fur out after the bath. That felt really, really good!
It was dry and warm in the shelter. Timmy was placed in a cage, and Penny brought him a big bowl of puppy stew! He was so happy! He fell in love with Penny on the spot. Mike was okay, but Penny fed him puppy stew! As he scarfed it down, he thought Oh yeah
!
A little while later, after he had devoured his puppy stew, and taken a short nap, Penny put a collar around his neck and insisted he go for a walk. Turns out, he was not very good at walking on a leash. He was not sure which way to go. Penny wanted to go one way and he wanted to go another way. Even when he tried to keep in step with her, he kept falling over! It took him a little while, but after a time, he got the hang of walking on a leash. Soon he walked like a big dog, though he tended to trip over his very big ears. He was hoping he’d grow into those ears very soon.
There were many dogs and cats that also lived in the shelter. They were waiting and waiting for adoption, just like Timmy. Penny had several people besides Mike who volunteered. They helped her take care of all of the dogs and cats and there were plenty of dogs and cats.
If he knew how to count Timmy could tell you how many dogs were there. But what he could tell you is that the cats outnumbered the dogs by a whole bunch. They were a bit snobby and it seemed cats did not like Timmy very much. He wasn’t ever sure why they disliked him, because he really liked those cats. He only wanted to play with them. But they just looked at him like he was crazy and walked away with their noses up in the air.
Bruno was his neighbor in the next cage and boy did he really hate cats. He said he hated cats, because a cat scratched him on his nose when he was a puppy and he had a bad booboo for a very long time. Ever since then he was very mean to them, growling and snarling. Not Timmy though, he loved cats. He
