    Listening When God Speaks

It’s an amazing thing how God—the Creator of all things—speaks to us. He moves within us through His Holy Spirit. He moves within us through His holy word, through prayer, and through the gathering together to honor Him in worship. He moves, He changes lives, and He speaks.

Before I was born, the Lord spoke to my parents through my sister Connie when she was about two. In her childlike babble, she said, Why you not take me to church? It floored my mother because my parents had both been raised in Christian homes where they went to church faithfully, and they knew they were out of the will of God. And besides, she was too little to talk in such a way. This was God speaking through His little creation to get the attention of this amazing couple and have them where He wanted them—in His will. They had strayed from everything they had been taught, but they were still sensitive to the sound of God’s voice. It just so happened that they attended church the next Sunday. The story goes that my parents have been an amazing blessing to many, many people over the past sixty-plus years.

Because of my parents being sensitive to God’s voice, I experienced a wonderful childhood and family life. There was a lot of love and a lot of gatherings in our home. My sister and I grew up in the outskirts of New Orleans, so we had a Cajun upbringing. Talk about some crazy, fun times! When we would get together, there was great food and laughter, and there was always somebody there playing a guitar or the piano and singing! I must say, it was a blessed life. We didn’t have a lot of money, and Mom and Dad struggled financially, but my sister and I never really knew that. My parents tithed faithfully in obedience to God, giving 10 percent of their income to the church as commanded by God. So we never went without. God’s blessings were upon our home because of my parents’ faithfulness and their faithful prayer life; they prayed for us, and I know that it is prayer that brings us close to God, comforts us, and keeps us safe. There have been many stories told about how my parents helped others financially. Connie and I didn’t even know until years later how they had given Christmas presents and food and blessed others with the little bit they had. I thank God for my wonderful parents and how they taught us about the love of God; they also taught us about how God must be Lord over our lives and in everything we do as we search for His will. And it all started with a little child being used by God. My sister and I both chose to follow the example of our parents; we both love God and have experienced His presence in our lives. We can both share of regrets, mistakes, and many heartaches in our lives, since we both are over fifty and have children and grandchildren. Trusting God and having His grace upon our lives has kept us so richly blessed! We have experienced His rich blessings time and time again.

My life’s journey has taken me through some amazing adventures. It started with me as a child having a special family, attending church faithfully, going on youth trips, and experiencing God and growing in my walk with Him. I learned how to search for the will of God and yield to it. At the age of seven, I decided to give my life to God and live
