In Search of Truth - DeLinda N. Baker
I
A God of Truth
One of the defining characteristics of God is truth. Every aspect of God is true and trustworthy. God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are all described as true. The inspired Word of God, like its source, is reliable and true. God’s precepts and commands are trustworthy and everlasting.
God is the origin of truth. Unless we begin with this fundamental understanding, it will be impossible to find and know truth.
There are many false gods worshipped by mankind. If people follow false creeds, they will quickly find themselves on the path to lies, deception, and an inability to discern and know real truth. In Romans 1:21, Paul talks about the fate of individuals who rejected God—their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened
.
To start on the journey of truth, one must first begin with God. One must recognize His absolute authority to dictate truth to mankind.
Day 1
God is True
But the Lord is the true God;
he is the living God, the eternal
King. —Jeremiah 10:10a
Where does truth originate from? To recognize truth, there must be an absolute, unwavering, and moral standard from which everything else is compared. In Jeremiah 10:10, we learn four important facets of the true God.
First, the Lord is the true God
. The Bible teaches that there are many false Gods, but there is only one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. All other gods are men’s imaginations or forged by their hands; they are not alive. Imputing life or conscience to false gods is futile, leading to emptiness and loss.
Second, God is Truth. Truth is not something God is seeking. God is the essence, the source and the very definition and standard of truth. Without God as a standard for comparison, it would be impossible to know what is authentic.
Third, God is living. Truth is vital, just and constant. It emanates from its source, God, and reveals itself through word, actions, and thoughts.
Finally, truth is everlasting. God is immutable, which means he never changes, either in character or in purpose. Because of this, we can know that truth emanating from God is also constant and unchanging. Those qualities that are true, right, just, good, and pure never change. They may be packaged in different times, events or personalities, but their underlying nature remains the same.
So, how do we as Christians recognize truth? The Bible says to love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). In loving God fully and searching the scriptures, we will find what truth looks like and know the standard by which all facts, events, and actions should be
