    The Birth of this Book

    Grow where you are

    I t was during a long, cold winter that my mother, my three siblings and I immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic. I was eight years old at the time, but did not feel like a child because I was the eldest of the four.

    As far back as I can remember, I have never felt my age, and have been very aware of having a rich and creative imagination. Long before we arrived in the United States, I had been nurturing fantasies of how amazing my life would be in this new country. I imagined that we as a family would be so happy, that the streets of the United States would glitter with gold, and that I would have my own bedroom with shiny white furniture, and curtains and a matching duvet on my bed.

    The reality was very, very different. We arrived in Manhattan in a cold, dreary October. The streets of New York City did not glitter; instead, they were just cold and gray. We didn’t have a big castle like I imagined; my siblings and I all shared a very small bedroom in my father’s uncle’s house. Adjusting to this new country was a struggle for me. Being the oldest, I had to learn the English language as fast as I could to help myself, my siblings and even my parents navigate our new reality.

    My father struggled to find meaningful employment, and needless to say, life got very stressful for us as both parents tried to find work. We ended up moving to Massachusetts, where we lived in a government shelter for six months. Eventually, we were given government-subsidized housing in Boston.
