Kass Harker

Kass loves to write for children. In her home studio in Nelson she loves nothing more than to let her imagination run wild. ‘Children are great critics. They have no hesitation in telling you something stinks so it is especially rewarding when they tell you they love your book.’ With the support of her partner of 30 years she has travelled around New Zealand and talked to kids about her writing. Sunny Nelson has been home for more than 30 years now and she loves to stroll the many beach and river walks with her sidekick Pippy (6 year old fox terrier). Kass also works fulltime as a public servant and enjoys the interaction she has with fellow staff and customers. Her hobbies include biking, hiking, digital games and reading.

    Chapter One – The Gift

It twists, it turns! It flips and whips. It slides and hides!

These were the words that Edward saw on the box even before he had ripped the entire wrapping off his present. And at the sight of these words, he squealed with delight. Well, actually he screamed, but that doesn’t sound boyish so we won’t embarrass Edward so early in the story.

It’s a Futuristicator, he said loudly. It’s a Futuristicator, he said again softly, hardly believing it was true. He couldn’t have wished for anything better on his tenth birthday.

His sisters Prue and Gemma didn’t know what the fuss was about, and sat unimpressed on the other side of the room.

But Edward wasn’t to be deterred. He explained, This is the latest in all gadgets and it can do amazing things. You can set it to work like a drone, it can be like a supersonic jet, or go under or over water. It can even be set to disappear!

At that, the girls giggled. They weren’t stupid. Nothing can disappear, Gemma said.

I think he means it has camouflage colours, said Edward’s father. Why don’t you take it over to the reserve and show the girls what it does while we get your birthday tea ready?

Come on, said Edward, almost falling over in his excitement to get out the door. The girls look at each other, shrugged and got to their feet. I suppose we had best keep an eye on our baby brother, said Gemma, even though there was only 14 months between them.

Edward was already across the road in the park before the girls had got to the front door, and was busily removing his Futuristicator from the box. He sat cross-legged on the grass, removing the batteries from their plastic packaging when the girls arrived.

    Can we help? Prue asked.

No, it’s ok, said Edward. I’ve got it.

So, the girls plonked themselves down on the grass and waited to be disappointed. Edward removed the back from the Futuristicator and inserted the batteries, with an expression of deep concentration on his face.

Have you played with one of these before, Edward? Gemma asked.

Well, no. Actually, I haven’t … but I’ve seen the prototype on YouTube, Edward replied. When you get the hang of one, you can do really impressive things.

Maybe you need to read the instructions first, she said, reaching for the rather thick instruction book. I can read it to you while you push buttons, pull levers and things if you like.

Yeah. That’d be cool, said Edward in a distracted way as he turned the Futuristicator back upright.

In your box, you have a Futuristicator, said Gemma. And four 6X batteries, a remote control, two digital batteries, two replacement Zinbonics, and an instruction book. Do you have all those?

Edward had set each thing in a line as Gemma read them out and replied, Yep, sure do.

He stroked the Zinbonics with pure pleasure on his face. "Boys," thought Prue.

OK, said Gemma, pick up the remote control and we’ll go over how to use this.

Edward did as instructed, and Gemma went on reading out loud while Edward pushed this button and that, and became familiar with the two levers.

It says to turn the Futuristicator on using the small green button, top front, said Gemma.

With his excitement building, Edward looked for the button. Ah, there it is, he said to himself and flicked it on. The Futuristicator made a low whirring sound and a series of red, blue and green lights flashed on and off. It was quite impressive, and now even Prue was taking notice.

On the remote, there should be a switch marked ‘Demo mode’, Emma said. Do you see it?

Edward found it and pressed it. Instantly, the Futuristicator rose from the ground slowly at first, like a helicopter. At about three metres off the ground, it suddenly flipped over, giving off a shrill sound and all its lights flashed in unison.

Wow, said Edward. Gemma and Prue said nothing but their expressions showed they were interested now and not just a little excited.

The Futuristicator flipped back the other way and then at speed raced off towards a small stand of native trees, stopping just short of a young Karaka. Then it did four flips and it whipped back; at such speed, the three were wide eyed, and with mouths open. And before they could say anything at all, the Futuristicator hissed and disappeared into the blue sky.

There was now concern on all three faces. Where’s it gone? asked Gemma, scrambling for the instruction book. But before she could find anything to help, the Futuristicator was there. It seemed to appear out of nowhere.

How did it do that? said Prue.

I don’t know, said Edward, but isn’t it great? Come on, Gem. Read more so I can have a go.

So, huddled in a group, the three learned how the Futuristicator worked and the best way to use the remote. Before long, Edward was doing
