Late fall sunshine filtered through the branches and remaining leaves. The stragglers were tossed about as a chilly wind waived the branches. An old Indian lived in very quiet country, surrounded by the woods and framed by some mountains in Manitoba, Canada. He walked out onto his porch where he lived alone since the death of his wife many years ago. He looked at his horses enjoying the clear sunshine. He turned when he heard his old hound bark at the chickens again through the window. This always gave him a smile.

The smile slipped off his face as he stepped down. He gripped his left arm and gasped. Within moments, his heart stopped, and his body slumped on the ground. His old hound, deaf, never heard the thump and turned to snuggle with the other dog.

As the sun began to set, a wolf stared at the body on the ground. It watched and waited. Sniffing the air, its nostrils were the only movement. An hour later, the wolf stared at him on the ground from a distance in the woods and waited and waited. But it could see there was no movement.

A couple of wolves walked toward him and touched him. He felt nothing because he was dead. Then the wolf started to eat his body. The dogs heard this when they woke up. They heard some wolf howls outside. They came to the window and saw the wolf eat the man’s body.

The dogs started barking at the wolf, but they couldn’t come out. They were stuck inside the house for awhile. A couple of wolves heard the dogs barking and saw them through the windows. They slunk back into the woods. Even though they did, they had eaten some of the contaminated man.

The dogs stared at the body outside. They kept barking, but no one heard them.

An ugly wolf-like creature stared at the cabin. The creature’s fur was patchy, and it had sores showing on its skin. The other wolves turned and looked at the creature. They growled but didn’t approach. After a moment, they took off into the woods and kept a wide distance. The creature looked awful. The wolves stared at the ugly wolf as they went into the woods.

The creature was very diseased and weak. It needed to eat something and regain its strength and energy. The ugly wolf looked at the man on the ground. He walked to him. The ugly wolf licked the man’s blood. He took a small bite of the man’s belly and opened the cavity. Soon, it was eating more vigorously and carved out a wide space in the cavity. It crawled inside the cavity and settled in.

A couple of old Indians visited the man and drove up the driveway in their pickup truck. The dogs heard the truck and started barking. When they arrived, they saw their friend on the ground.

The first old Indian said, Look there! Something’s wrong with him!

The second man jumped out of the truck and checked his friend’s neck. Oh no. He shook his head.

The dogs’ barking caught their attention. The second man said, Oh god … Whew, that smells bad.

Bugs and flies flew around their friend’s body. The first old man took out his cell phone and called the police. I found a dead body on the ground outside his home. It looks like murder. Come over here now.

Shortly, sirens could be heard coming toward the driveway. A couple of police officers got out of their car. The first officer walked up. Whew … that is some smell.

The second cop said, Oh Jesus Christ.

The first officer said to the two Indians, Do you know this man?

The first old man said, Yes, I know him. He lived here.

A car drove up the driveway and parked. A couple of investigators wearing business suits stepped out of the car and came to them. The investigators took a look at the man on the ground.

The first investigator said, Whew … He coughed. Look, I am an investigator. As of right now, this is a crime scene. You all need to step away from the body. He put a blanket over the dead body and stepped away to begin questioning the men. The first investigator walked to his car and motioned for the others to follow.

The second investigator said, Look, I found something. Look at those paw prints near the body. The two investigators spoke for a moment between themselves, and the second investigator walked off into the woods, following the paw prints.

After a moment, he emerged from the woods. The first investigator nodded toward the house where the dogs could be heard barking. Dogs must have seen it when it happened. Too bad we can’t communicate with those dogs … damn it.

The second investigator said, I am not sure if this is related to the crime. I only found paw prints from wolves. Probably a couple of wolves out there. I didn’t find anything else around here.

The first investigator said, Bring him to the morgue. Wait and see if the ME finds something. We need to confirm details.

An ambulance came to take the body away. It arrived at the hospital. The investigators showed up in the morgue shortly after.

At the morgue, Dr. Shawn Hultzman watched as they walked in. Dr. Hultzman was very good-looking with short medium-brown hair, and his skin color showed his mixed heritage. His tall muscular frame belied his age. He had just graduated from university where he studied human disease.

Dr. Hultzman worked in the morgue until something better came along, and his attitude showed. He barely glanced up when the second investigator walked in with the body. Clearing his throat, the investigator said, Please find something that will tell me what the cause of death here is. The crime scene didn’t give us many answers, just more questions.

Dr. Hultzman said, All right, but I gotta be honest, I have worked on dead bodies, but this is my first experience with a crime scene.

The first investigator said, First time? How long you work here?

Six months or so. I will take a look and let you know the cause of death.

The first investigator said, Good, report to me soon.

The doctor put on his gloves and looked at the two investigators. Nodding, he said, Yeah, all right. Hopefully, I will know something soon. He reached over and began to arrange the body.

The two investigators headed for the door. Speaking to himself, the doctor said, Whew. This is the worst-smelling body. Especially since you haven’t been dead long.

The doctor looked up from the body and shouted, Hold on for a second, gentlemen. Please come back here.

The second investigator turned. What’s going on?

The doctor said, Look, this was not a crime. Look, his abdomen is moving.

The first investigator said, He’s alive?

No, he is dead. No heartbeat.

The second investigator pointed to the belly, the movement slight but observable. What is it?

The doctor shrugged. He hasn’t been dead long, but an animal maybe. I don’t know what type of animal could be in there.

The first investigator paled then turned green. What?

The second investigator shook his head. Let me see what animal is in there.

Dr. Hultzman turned on his recorder. Yeah, strange. He gave details about the body, like the gender and height. Now I am opening the abdominal cavity.

He reached deep inside and lifted out an ugly wolf-like creature. It didn’t move at all. Speaking to the investigators, he continued, There you go. Look at this, I think this is a wolf. But this is odd. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

The first investigator shuddered. Oh my goodness.

The second investigator asked, Is this thing … alive?

Dr. Hultzman looked carefully. I think so.

They gasped in surprise as Shawn lifted it up to put it on the adjacent table. It became alert and, moving fast, bit his hand.

They gasped and panicked. The investigators both pulled out their guns, and the second investigator shot the creature.

Oh shit! said the first investigator, looking down at the dead creature.

The second investigator looked at the doctor. Are you all right?

Dr. Hultzman removed his gloves and began to wash the wound. Yeah, I am fine, Look, this isn’t a crime scene, and I can’t finish the autopsy right now. I better have one of the ER doctors take a look and get a preventive rabies shot.

The investigators nodded and began to take a closer look at the creature. Examining the paws, the first investigator spoke to the doctor without looking up. Yeah, you better do it. This looks like the animal that made some of the tracks at the crime scene. Keep us updated.

The doctor wrapped his hand in gauze and headed out the door to the ER. After being examined by one of the doctors, Dr. Hultzman sat on the table, waiting for his rabies shot. A beautiful female nurse came in, and he smiled as she looked at him with her pretty eyes. She was hot, and they flirted as she gave him his rabies shots. As he adjusted his shirt, she wrote a note on a slip of paper for him. He looked down when she tucked it in his shirt pocket.

    Call me, she said, winking.

He patted the note. Sure, I will call you.

He headed back to the morgue. He noticed some strange pink blood from the wolf mixed with the red blood on the floor. He looked in the now empty cavity in the man’s body, and it had the same strange pink color. He began to clean up and put the wolf’s body on a shelf to put in the cooler.

He sighed. He was off shortly, and these bodies could wait. It had been a long, strange day. As he finished up, he slid both bodies into separate coolers. He began to feel bad. He left the hospital and got into his car.

He drove home alone in the darkness, feeling worse as he drove. Sweat began to bead on his forehead. He began to get nauseous. He struggled to stay on the road, and his car drifted across the road. He grimaced in pain and pulled over. He began to struggle to breathe.

He pulled out his phone and tried to dial 911 before dropping the phone when he lost control. His breath became hard, and his whole body shook with pain. He shook and vomited red blood. A seizure took over his limbs, his eyes rolled up, and pink foam trickled out of his mouth as he took his last breath.

His body began to change. Slowly, fur began to cover his skin, and his face became more wolf-like. His hands became paws, and after a few moments, his wolf awakened, and he stood on the seats. He looked at the windshield and struggled with the door. Shaking his body, he threw off the remnants of his clothing. He threw his body against the door, and eventually, the window cracked, and he made his escape out of the car.

He stood at the edge of the woods, his tall wolf form casting a shadow in the bright moonlight. His fur was the same golden color his hair once was, and his eyes were clear and bright. His thick healthy fur rippled over strong muscles as he loped off into the woods. His nose caught the scent of something small and tasty and worthy of chasing.

In the bright moonlight, two police officers drove by Dr. Hultzman’s car. These were the same officers who were at the scene of the old man’s death. The first cop got out and walked to the car. Nobody is here. Strange. Look at those clothes lying on the seat.

The second officer walked around the car. Look, there’s a broken front passenger window.

The first cop said, Look there, as he pointed to an ID picture with the hospital name and logo.

The first officer put on gloves and reached for the badge. Oh … I know this person. Where is he?

The second officer said, Weird. The engine is running without anybody in here.

Maybe he went into the woods to … you know . . . go?

Maybe … Check it out there.

The two cops walked around into the woods, not far from the car. The first cop said, Hello? Shawn? Somebody out there?

They waited to hear a response, but the woods stayed silent.

The American president and prime minister of Canada had a big meeting in Canada. The two men shook hands and reporters asked questions and cameras flashed.

As the two were leaving, the president leaned over and spoke privately with the prime minister, Wait … can we talk in private, alone?

    Sure, come into my office.

The two men walked a short distance to the office, and the prime minister said, There you go, as he motioned for the president to enter.

The two men spoke behind closed doors for awhile, and the president rose from his seat. Give me a call if anything urgent comes up. Keep this secret between us.

The prime minister was impressed as he learned about the Silver Vampire and that he could, if needed in an emergency, contact the Silver Vampire through the president. It helps. It will save my country if anything happens, and I will call you. Thank you for coming.

The two men shook hands again, and the president headed home to Washington DC.

A couple, a man and a woman, were walking on a hiking path well into the woods, some distance from the road. Suddenly, they heard a noise in the woods that sounded like growling. They were scared.

The woman said, Is it close by?

I don’t know … Maybe some animals are out there. We shouldn’t stop here. We should keep moving and stay on the path. We will be out of here soon. He was worried but tried to stay positive and moved quickly on the hiking path.

As the darkness began to overtake the trail, the two tried to hurry out of the woods. Suddenly, the man saw a big wolf in the trees.

    He gasped. Look there.

The wolf growled, and they both backed up a bit. The woman said, My god, it looks big.

    Yeah, a big wolf. Run!

They ran away as fast as they could, but they heard the wolf chasing them. The wolf sped up and jumped at the woman, but the man pushed her out of the way. It was too late; the wolf had sunk his teeth into the woman’s arm.

The man yelled, Run! Don’t look back!

The woman ran away with her wounded arm. The man picked up a large stick and turned to swing at the wolf. The wolf growled and snapped at the man, finally biting into his arm. The woman ran as fast as she could and stood a safe distance from the dangerous wild animal. The wolf began to eat the man’s body.

The woman began to run and was soon out of breath. She looked around quickly and decided to hide in a tree to rest. The wound in her arm was already infected, unbeknownst to her. She took a deep breath and listened to the noises in the background to hear if the wolf came by, but it seemed there was nothing.

The woman wondered where the man was and if was he okay. She was afraid to move on in the woods after resting. She was afraid of the dark, which was closing in. She didn’t feel like she had an option and felt helpless. She stayed in the tree, looking around and listening.

The wolf ate the whole man’s body until all that remained were his skull and bones.

Suddenly, the woman felt like she had a high fever and chills. Her body began to shake. She groaned and was in pain. She tried to stay quiet, but the pain was so bad that a loud groan escaped from her.

Even though she tried to be quiet and make no noise, the pain was too much. She didn’t want any wild animals to find her. She groaned then vomited red blood. She shook again then vomited pink blood. After a moment, she died. She was the second person infected by the wolf.

After a moment, she woke up in the woods and softly growled as she turned completely into a wolf like Shawn did.

As the sun set and darkness began to creep closer to the biker bar, a line of Harley-Davidson motorcycles glowed in a long row in the parking lot. Kaylee stopped her motorcycle along with a secret FBI agent, clearly undercover and wearing Harley-Davidson clothes, who sat behind her while she rode.

The agent took his helmet off as Kaylee took hers off as well, exposing her contacts that protected her silver eyes and a fake tan that covered her being a vampire. They brought their helmets into the bar. A crowd of other Harley-Davidson riders was in there.

Kaylee walked toward to bar. Are you Leo? she asked the bartender.

The crowd heard her, and an overweight man with a large belly, a long beard, and long wavy hair walked to her.

The overweight man said, Hello, hot lady, I am Leo. How can I help you? What do you want?

The crowd laughed, and Kaylee knew he was teasing her. Kaylee wasn’t sure who Leo was because there were too many males and a few women there.

Kaylee grabbed his leather jacket. No time. Don’t play with me. I need to see the real Leo.

The overweight guy laughed. "Whooo, tough woman. It’s really me, Leo. Join our table, and I’ll buy you drink. Is he with you? Boyfriend? Don’t mind if I steal her for a minute?" The crowd laughed again.

Kaylee slapped his face. Yeah, I’ll show you how tough I am. I am not scared of you, fat loser. He is with me, and Leo is expecting to see me. Where is he?

The drunken crowd laughed. The FBI agent was hiding his feelings. He couldn’t believe she would dare him.

The overweight guy sniggered, Show me how tough you are. You are nothing but a weak pussy!

The FBI agent felt helpless, but he didn’t want to screw up his undercover job to track down and find the drugs sold by Leo. He stopped and asked, Wait a second, who are you? Leo?

I don’t think he is Leo. He is a fat loser.

The overweight guy leered at Kaylee. Hey, come on, slap my face again. That is so sexy. The drunken crowd laughed again.

The FBI agent suspected why he started all the trouble. But they needed to find Leo. What? Screw this!

Kaylee smiled. He is a dumb, ugly drunk, and he likes trouble. She turned. Look, I came here for Leo. You have to bring me to him, or I will knock you out.

The overweight guy said, Whooo … that’s sexy. I’d love to have a fight with you!

Kaylee took her leather jacket off and put it on a tall chair. Kaylee acted as though she thought he was nothing. This is a waste of my time. Let’s fight until you tell me where he is.

The FBI agent didn’t want her to fight him because it was his job to keep track of and find Leo. He whispered, Don’t do this, to Kaylee.

Kaylee ignored him and gave a come on hand gesture. Let’s fight.

The crowd laughed and hooted. The overweight guy said, Come on, you are nothing but a weak pussy.

He went to hit her face to scare her, but she stood without panicking when he tried to hit her.

Scared to hit me? Act like a real man. Kaylee punched his face, holding back her strength and speed so they won’t identify her as a vampire. He lost control and fell backward on a table. The table fell over.

The crowd murmured, Whoa, stand back.

The overweight man said, Whew, she is strong … like a man. He had trouble getting back up for a moment.

The FBI agent was shocked. He knew this would screw up the plan and hoped nobody fought him as well.

A man with two gold teeth grinned, showing his teeth and that he wasn’t a vampire. The true Leo came out of his office and shouted, "Stop! No fighting this bar! Enough!" He fired a gun at the ceiling. The crowd fell silent.

He noticed the girl and walked to her. Who is this?

The overweight guy rubbed his jaw and spoke. This girl is looking for Leo.

Leo turned to Kaylee. Who are you?

I am Amy. I am with my boyfriend Ugo. You were expecting to see me.

Nodding, he said, Yeah, all right … Come on in.

Kaylee put her jacket on and followed him.

As she passed the overweight man, she leaned toward him. You fight like a pussy.

The crowd chuckled. The overweight guy was angry but was stuck with Leo there. Kaylee and the FBI agent walked into his office. The overweight man followed. This girl is really strong, like a man. I feel like I broke my jaw.

One of crowd shouted, You can’t feel that because you are drunk! The crowd laughed.

Still rubbing his jaw, he said, Ouch. I think it’s broken.

Leo sat down on his desk. There was a curtain covering the wall behind the desk with a window or something else behind it. Kaylee couldn’t tell. There were three other men in the room. One was missing teeth on the top, and his other teeth looked brown. The second man was bald and missing teeth too. The last man had a long, greasy ponytail and was missing teeth as well.

Poor dental plan here, thought Kaylee.

Kaylee and the agent looked at them and wondered who they were—they seemed so ugly. The FBI agent made a face Leo spoke to the man with the ponytail. Check their weapons.

He checked her weapons and found a knife. Look, she had a knife.

Kaylee shrugged. If you don’t mind, I need to protect myself. I am a woman, that’s all.

The man checked the FBI agent for weapons as well. No weapons.

Leo nodded. All right. Give me the password from who sent you here.

Tina sent me here to trade for her cocaine delivery today because she had surgery. She trusts me, so I will take it.

Leo wondered if they were undercover agents or something. Right, okay.

The first man looked at Kaylee. Why he is with you? He looks like a fag. They all chuckled.

No, he’s not gay. He is my boyfriend Ugo. Never mind him for now. Let’s discuss the delivery schedule.

Leo shook his head. Why are we suddenly going to discuss the delivery? First, we have to test you guys. I need to know about you first before doing business with you, all right? Leo needed to decide if he thought they were trustworthy for delivering the drugs without being undercover agents.

Kaylee said, All right, tell me anything, whatever. I will tell you.

The bald guy asked, If you are his girlfriend, I’d love to watch you kiss him.

    Kaylee asked, Kiss?

The FBI agent asked, What? Test us?

The third guy asked, You have to prove it to us, and if we don’t believe you, you came to the wrong place.

Kaylee made a face. Leo shrugged. Right, you have to do this, or you aren’t taking the drugs. Leo was out of his mind.

Kaylee said, Fine, whatever. She grabbed the FBI agent and kissed him. Satisfied?

Leo said, Yeah, okay. Listen to me carefully. If I find out that you work for the FBI or something, you will be part of these heads.

Leo grabbed the curtain to open it and let them see. Behind it were large jars that held dead heads. There were three shelves, and five jars were on the top shelf. Four jars were on the middle shelf, and four more were on the bottom shelf. Four were female, and one man’s head still had braces. There were two empty spaces.

The FBI agent and Kaylee widened their eyes in disbelief. The FBI agent recovered quickly, but in his mind, he was disgusted.

The second guy said, Watch out, or you will be on our shelf.

The third man said, Several were undercover agents.

The FBI agent gasped and was speechless. He was wary.

    Kaylee said, Interesting.

The agent asked, What is interesting about those heads? Why does that one have braces on his teeth?

Leo asked, Aren’t you scared of them?

    The FBI agent said, Yes.

Kaylee said, No, I am not. I used to work in a morgue,

    Leo asked, Morgue?

The third man guy said, What did you need the bodies for?

    Kaylee
