The Revenge of Turkeys - Jose Felipe Gonzalez

    CHAPTER ONE

    The Pines Poultry Farm

Alabama, December 2011 in south Prichard, a farmer named Richard Smith had built his farm years ago on a very beautiful, placid, piece of land on the shores of the Mobile River. Smith was the owner of the poultry farm. It was a source of livelihood for a hundred workers who take care of all of the farm work.

It was a Monday, December 2011; one of the workers named Juan was eating a hamburger during his lunch break. To switch things up and have some fun, he decided to throw pieces of hamburger meat at the turkeys to give them something new to snack on. Just a little while ago he had fed the turkeys and was seated in the corral. The animals really loved hamburger meat. It was the first time the turkeys had eaten meat and they began to fight amongst themselves, competing for the pieces of meat Juan threw at them. At the same time, his was quite amused by what was happening with the turkeys without realizing that he would be the perfect prey for the turkeys. The turkeys were becoming ever more agitated and furious with each other because of the meat. When the hamburger finished, they looked at him as if he were a prey and suddenly they attacked him in a group, in such a way that the poor man started to run and with much difficulty opened the corral door. He could no longer defend himself against the weight of these animals that knocked him down to the floor, pecking his entire body with their razor sharp beaks. They plucked his eyes out quickly ate pieces of his flesh. The young man could no longer get up and his screams couldn’t be heard by his colleagues, who were far away. After the great feast, only the skeleton remained, with bare, bloody bones, and scraps of bloody clothing filled with holes.

Immediately afterwards the forty thousand chickens left the poultry farm guided by their leader who quickly led them towards the forest.

Meanwhile, the next day at seven o’clock in the morning, which was the start of the workday, workers began going about their duties on other areas of the farm. However, one of the workers who had to work jointly with Juan in his designated area, didn’t see him and assumed he was already at the work site, and kept walking until he arrived at the main door. He was greeted by a huge surprise when he found a bloody skeleton and scraps of clothing strewn everywhere, and the turkeys disappeared without a trace. He immediately yelled for his colleagues, who ran to him. They received a huge shock and made groans of pain and terror. Some of them almost vomited at the sight of such a horror filled death scene. No one realized that the skeleton was one of them. It was thrown on the ground, the victim was unrecognizable, and everyone asked themselves what had become of the turkeys. The turkeys weren’t caged; they were free ranging within the corral, but were surrounded by metal wire.

After seeing the horrific condition the victim’s body had been left in, they alerted the owner of the poultry farm, who without wasting any time, called the police. He did this so that both the case and the disappearance of the turkeys could be investigated. When the authorities arrived they were also in for quite a shock when they carefully observed the condition of the fleshless body, without a single clue about who it could be. Robert Klein, the police sergeant of the city of Prichard, he took charge of the case. The investigations not only looked into the death of the young man, he also called the Department of Animal Control, in order to find out if the missing birds could be found in the area surrounding the farm. The sergeant that was assigned to the case asked the farm owner mister Ronald, Do you think this body could be the worker who can’t be found anywhere? You told me your worker’s name is Juan Contreras and he is from Guadalajara Mexico and has worked for you for five years. That’s true but for now I can’t assure you of anything until you guys perform all the test in the laboratory. But here’s his photo among the documents he showed me, and his green card. I’m ninety percent sure it was your worker. We are going to verify this in a few days, as well as how he died and what kind of animal attacked him. Right now, we have only recovered some feathers around the body and we’re going to take them to the laboratory to see if we can uncover any clues and clarify the circumstances surrounding this horrible death. Additionally, the Animal Control Department together with a few police officers searched everywhere for the missing turkeys. The search lasted five days, without producing any leads. This seemed quite odd to the local authorities of this town, who began to think that the turkeys had been stolen. After two weeks of investigating, the forensic scientist and authorities involved with this case determined that the body belonged to Juan Contreras, the worker at The Pines poultry farm, and his death was due to bites from savage wolves. This conclusion was reached given the fact that the farm was close to the forest, where these animals are abundant. But the same question swirled about in everyone’s head. What happened to the turkeys? It’s not possible that a pack of savage wolves ate forty thousand turkeys. That’s impossible, said Robert Klein, and if they ate some of them, they should have left a lot of feathers in the place where Juan’s body was found. But we only found fifty feathers, and we should have found thousands of feathers and the dismembered bodies of the birds. The fact that we haven’t a single dismembered bird makes this a real mystery mister Ronaldo. This whole thing also strikes me as very odd; the worst part of all of this is the loss of my worker. With respect to the animals, it’s true that I have lost a lot of money but that doesn’t matter, what hurts me is Juan’s death. He was a good worker at my farm. I recommend that your workers be very careful from now on, and be vigilant, and someone should be armed to defend against wild animals. Meanwhile, the turkeys moved into the forest which was quite far from the forest. They began losing weight due to the exercise of walking a lot. They began to reproduce with the wild turkeys of the region, and became more agile, faster runners, flew short distances, to stand in trees, and mingle amongst them. Six months later the turkeys had reproduced extensively. On June 12th 2012, Larry Trent and Douglas Lein went hunting for wild turkeys, they were both from the city of Mobile, and they were on vacation. They both agreed that hunting turkeys was the best use of their leisure time. They both worked in the same food processing company which specialized in cattle. Larry was a machinery operator and Douglas was a food inspector. They were good friends. On the way there, they chatted. They drove a sporty Toyota with a tailgate designed to carry cargo and other necessary items for the trip. Larry also brought his dog named Duky, who was a good hunting dog. It wasn’t the first time they had hunting, they had hunted dear, but this time the goal was to hunt wild turkeys. While Larry drove, the scenery became very gorgeous and full of vegetation, and the absolute tranquility contrasted sharply with the chaos of the city. Suddenly Douglas asked, Are we that far away from our destination? No, we’re only two miles away, replied Doug. When they arrived, each one retrieved their backpacks, tightened their belts, and each one carried their respective riffles, entering ever deeper into the forest. Their car was left behind on the freeway, both of them faded slowly into the background. The deeper they ventured into the forest, the more quiet they became. They walked slowly so as to surprise the wild turkeys. Without making virtually any noise Duky also walked stealthily beside them, sniffing everywhere so he could alert Larry to the presence of turkeys. Suddenly, Larry came closer to Douglas and told him in a hushed voice, I’ll go to the left and you go the right, this way we’ll have a better chance to catch the turkeys. Sounds pretty good to me, replied Douglas. They walked carefully and silently because of snakes. Larry had spotted many turkeys in the trees; he had never seen so many of them in his life. It was something truly out of the ordinary the tree branches were completely full, with thousands of turkeys, they were almost innumerable. A smile drew across Larry’s face. I can’t believe I found the turkeys so quickly. We’ll leave quickly and fill the truck with turkeys. Surely my friend has already seen them." But Larry didn’t realize that very close to him, on the ground, there were also thousands and thousands of turkeys. He hadn’t seen them because he was looking up in the trees. He was fascinated by the innumerable quantity of these animals. It was difficult to choose which turkey to shoot first. There were turkeys in the lower and upper branches; logically he decided to shoot one that was resting on the lower branches. The shot hit it in the bull’s eye. He shot another turkey that fell quickly to the ground. His dog Duky carried away the first turkey, immediately afterwards he ordered his dog to carry away the second one. He retrieved it and brought it to its owner. But some of them were lying in wait, and ran giddily towards the dog, whose eyes they proceeded to pluck out, and they devoured it in a matter of seconds. Once Larry realized that his dog hadn’t returned with his prey after calling him several times, went to go see what had happened to his dog. When he arrived at the place, he was stupefied when all he saw was his dog’s bloody skeleton. The turkeys had eaten him, retreated, and were hiding from Larry. Immediately a panic swept over his entire body, he realized he was in grave danger. He deduced that the turkeys had eaten his dog, he yelled to alert his friend to the danger. He began to run, forgetting the two turkeys he had killed, but the turkeys, which were in the branches, flew towards him and quickly reached him, while those on the ground also flew and ran towards him. He fired a few last shots, like a depraved madman killing some of them, while completely emptying his riffle. But there were too many of them, and they quickly devoured him. But Douglas hadn’t heard his friend’s screams and gunshots, there were no turkeys where he was. Immediately he ran towards the direction of the screams, but he didn’t see anything, nor did he receive any response. That’s why he began to suspect that something bad happened to his friend. What Douglas didn’t know was that turkeys have very good hearing. They had heard him when he shouted for his friend while he walked nervously with his riffle in his hands. He looked everywhere and suddenly found the first dead turkey, a little further up he found his friend’s body, with his riffle by his side, and five dead turkeys. The body had been left horribly bloody, without eyes, and bare bones. It was frightful, the images made him scream and he shook with fear. He focused his glance upwards, and observed thousands of thousands of turkeys in the trees. They observed him cautiously, waiting for him to run so they could pursue him. He lowered his glance and realized that he was surrounded by turkeys that were resting on the ground. Without giving it a second thought, he ran as sprightly as possible, but the birds flew from the trees and the ground. Those on the ground also ran towards him. The poor guy couldn’t reach the car; it was parked just fifty meters away on the street. The turkeys ate him quickly just as they had done with his friend,
