Legends Myths Monsters and Ghosts Vol. 1 the Southern USA Edition - George Lunsford

    Prelude

This book is about myths, legends, cryptozoological creatures and the paranormal. Cryptozoology is a pseudoscience that aims to prove the existence of entities from the folklore records. The information contained in this book was compiled from hours of research and stories I found interesting over the years. I gathered information on four to five stories per state, for you to enjoy. I’ve included the history, location, and sighting reports of the creatures and/or ghost. Please keep an open mind as many people believe these stories are real. Some of the stories date back hundreds of years. Some are even found in parts of the bible. For instance, in the King James version of the bible, unicorns are talked about in the following verses Numbers 23:22, Numbers 24:8, Deuteronomy 33:17, Job 39:9-12, and Psalm 22:21. There are also references to other creatures such as fiery serpents, the leviathan and even giants.

For science people, "Scientist have identified some 2 million species of plants, animals, and microbes on Earth, and estimate that there are millions more left to discover. New species are constantly being discovered and described. The most commonly discovered new species are typically insects, because this type of animal has a high degree of biodiversity. Newly discovered mammals are rare, but do occur, typically in remote places that haven’t been well studied in the past. Some animals are found to be new species only when scientists peer at their genetic code, these are called cryptic species, because they look outwardly like another species. Some newfound species come from museum collections that haven’t been previously combed through and, of course, from fossils. In 2004 a new species of large Chimpanzees was found in the Congo. In 2017 a new species of Orangutan was found in Indonesian island of Sumatra.

I use those references to show that it is very possible that these stories could be real. More people have seen bigfoot than have seen a million dollars in cash. I am writing this book not to convince you, but to get you to step outside the box and expand your mind. True people of science will not close their minds but will open their mind to the possibilities that these stories told, could just be true. People of religion believe in GOD, even though they can’t see him. They know that GOD is much wiser, and nothing is beyond him. I hope you enjoy this book. I am not saying these stories are true or false, just sharing tales of legends and folklore that I have enjoyed learning about and I hope you enjoy them too.

    Chapter 1

    Cherokee Legends

I have lived close to the Eastern band of the Cherokee most of my life. My beautiful wife is Cherokee, and she and I have discussed some of the Cherokee legends over the years. I’ve heard about the creatures from not only their history, but sightings that still occur to this day. The creatures I will tell you about in this chapter are the Yunwi Tsunsdi or the little people, Tsul Kalu, their bigfoot, The Raven Mocker, and finally Spearfinger a stone clad witch. These are only a few of the Cherokee legends that I’ve found interesting and I hope you will too. The stories of these creatures have been passed down for ages and remain the same today as they were first told. The real question is, are these stories just legends or real creatures.

Let’s get started with the Yunwi Tsunsdi (pronounced: yun-wee joon-stee). You can find this and many other Cherokee words at www.native-languages.org. Yunwi Tsunsdi are the little people from Cherokee mythology. They are a human looking spirit of nature that reveals themselves as small child like creatures. They are usually invisible but from time to time they reveal themselves to help the Cherokee people. Legend has it that you need to be careful not to disrespect or show aggression toward them or nature, as they will use their power to punish you. The Yunwi Tsunsdi live close to the Cherokee and watch over the Cherokee people. It is said that they help lost children and travelers to safety. I read one story at www.pitanemagazine.com about a lonely man wondering through the forest and came across the track of a Yunwi Taundi and followed them to a cave. He sees them, and they invite him and the Yunwi Taundi take care of him. When the man starts to go the little people warn him Do not tell anyone about us or you will die. The man agrees and goes back to the settlement. He starts telling about the little people and drops dead. The moral of this story is to always keep your promises.

The Yunwi Taundi are divided into four clans: The Rock clan, The Laurel Clan, The Tree Clan and The Dogwood Clan. Each of these clans are different than the other. The Rock clan is considered the malicious one and get offended very easily. They don’t like when their space is invaded and have been known to steal children. The Laurel clan are the happy and tricksters of the little people. They love to play tricks on people, to dance, play music, and laugh. So, if you are ever in the Appalachian Mountains and you hear music or laughter as you walk through the woods, it just may be the Cherokee little people. They could just be watching over you. The Tree clan hangs out in the trees watching over the humans and looking for any disrespect of nature. They dish out the punishment to those who disrespect nature. So always be respectful of nature when you are in the woods. Finally, the Rock clan, they are the true watches and protectors of humans. They are the most serious of the clans and they are stern and don’t mess around as they have an important job to do. Each of the clans are used as a moral lesson to teach the Cherokee children.

A friend on the reservation told me once that while clearing an area out for a new building the workers found a bunch of tunnels and bones of a little person. The experts said it was not a baby or child because it had molars and the skull was the size of a little baby. In addition, molars come in at around nine years old. The little people are as old as the Cherokee tribe. I was unable to find any creditable sightings or a full telling of the history by the Cherokee people, but I do hope they are real. The thought of the Yunwi Tsunsdi in the woods watching over us and leading our children to safety if lost, gives me a little hope. The morals the little people represent are good and pure. Remember respect the woods or you may find out the hard way if they are real.

Now let’s move on to the Cherokee legend Tsul Kalu (bigfoot). Pronounced as Soo Kaloo. There are other names such as Slant or sloped eyed giant, it was called the Cherokee Devil on a tv show and the Europeans called it the Jutaculla.

The Tsul Kalu is a humanoid type creature covered with hair. Basically, it is the Cherokee bigfoot. It has been described to around 8 to 10 feet tall, about 500 to 800 pounds, extremely strong, and very agile through the woods. It makes its home in Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee. Located at a place called Tsunegun’yi which is a 100 acre spot on the slope of a mountain called Tanasee Bald. It borders three counties Jackson, Haywood, and Transylvania. The Tsul Kalu has been linked to the Tuckasegee River about a mile above Deep Creek in Swain County North Carolina.

Reports of Tsul Kalu go all the way back to the 1800’s where it was recorded by the Europeans. There has also been reports as recent as 2010. I was unable to get the specifics, but in the latest sighting the Tsul Kalu was attacking a man’s dogs in Cleveland county North Carolina.

Let’s look at the legend of Tsul Kalu. A long time ago a widow lived with her one daughter at the old town of Känuga on Pigeon River. The girl was of age to marry, and her mother used to talk with
