H,
Plud … Plud …
That was quite a landing!
Oako exclaimed as he landed in Wayland Park in Dover, New Hampshire. I did not mean to bump into such a fine-looking pine tree. My goodness, you have so many thick branches. Pine trees usually look scrawny.
Who’s talking? How can I possibly speak? My goodness, it’s going to be a weird day! My name is Pineer [Pin ear].
"I am an oak tree, and my name is Oako [Oak O]. When I am flying, I make a soft SWHOOOSH sound. When I am getting my roots comfortable in the ground, I make a soft Plud, Plud sound."
Wow! You made those noises? I’ve never seen you around before.
Well, I come and go as I please.
You can move anywhere you want? I can’t do that. That’s ridiculous. No, it’s amazing!
Pineer exclaimed. What a low soothing voice you have.
Tell me about your life, Pineer.
Oh, I’m just a plain old pine tree. I’d rather hear everything about your life. I’m not going anywhere, and I’ve never talked before either. This is incredible!
Oako told Pineer all about becoming a magic oak tree.
I was planted near a small lake in Pioneer, Ohio, about a hundred years ago.
Is Pioneer like my name, Pineer?
No, you pronounce Pioneer [Pie o near], and you say [Pin ear] for your name.
Oh,
Pineer said.
Oako continued, A little boy, Sean, planted an acorn. He watered the acorn seed every day. What made it so special was Sean’s tender loving care. As the seed grew into a little seedling, Sean added a rich fertilizer and told his plant that his oak tree was going to become magic. He gave the little tree so much attention and so much love that as the oak tree grew, magic did become a part of the tree.
Oh, please tell me more!
Pineer exclaimed. What’s love?
Love is difficult to describe, but I will try to show you what love is, Pineer. There are different kinds of love. It is a feeling, a special feeling.
Pineer was puzzled and didn’t understand.
Oako explained, At first, Sean told the little oak tree about things he needed help with. Then he shared his problems, sitting with his back against the little trunk. Sean thought the oak tree was growing rapidly, and sure enough, it was. He continued to care for the oak tree every day. Sean discovered that the oak tree did help solve his problems. He named his tree Oako. Then one day, I spoke to Sean—and that did not surprise him at all. He told me that he knew the oak tree was Magical. Sean also told me that my voice was deep and soothing.
You’re Oako! Your voice is so cool!
Pineer exclaimed.
Yes, I am Sean’s Oako. When Sean became fourteen years old, he moved away. I think Sean forgot about his tree because he never came back. That is why children over fourteen years of age cannot see or hear me—unless I want that to happen. It took a great deal of love for all this magic to happen.
Love must be grand!
Pineer stated in awe.
As the years passed by, something miraculous happened. I felt different, and I knew I was not like other oak trees. However, I did not know at that time I was going to have an unusual life.
Oh my,
Pineer said.
"I discovered that I could talk to other trees, and the plants could talk to
