About this ebook

Welcome to Doing the Greater Work basic training. This book is designed to facilitate individual and group discussions on several ways to hone your mind and thought processes.

Prior to Jesus beginning his public ministry, He performed the greater work within Himself. His preparation for public work serves as the building block of this book.

How did Christ order His own mental and spiritual life? Well, Jesus declared that the words He spokeas well as the mighty acts He performedwere a direct result of His interaction with the Father.

Although many believers focus primarily on the outer workings (i.e., healing, laying on of hands, etc.), this book does not.

The challenges we face each day in doing the greater work is a lifelong process. We must be proven faithful to the Father before we can do the unprecedented exploits for the Kingdom of God.

The apostle Paul encouraged his followers to let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:5). These words serve as a foundation for this book.

Doing the Greater Work provides biblical models and practical examples that will help you develop a greater works mentality.

    Acknowledgments

God has blessed me with super-ordinary parents Eva Smith and the late Reverend Henry Smith, who has gone home to be with the Lord.

Dad’s spiritual insights, coaching and encouragement have prepared me for this spiritual journey.

Also, I would like to thank:

    • Yolanda E. Swilley-Smith for her encouragement in the writing of this book

    • Suzette Farquharson-Morgan of FarMor Group, Inc. for her guidance and support

    • Ruth Stockley for her editorial assistance

    Foreword

No one should spend so much time in contemplation that they ignore the needs of a neighbor, nor be so absorbed in action that they fell no need for contemplation of God. What should draw us to contemplation is not escape or laziness, but the opportunity to search for and discover truth, knowing that as we make progress in this search we share our discoveries with others – Augustine

So wrote Dr. Frank S. Smith in Doing the Greater Work.

Smith’s love for people and his faith in Christ are apparent and interconnected. In short, his spirituality does not retreat from the harshness and joys of life, but emerges from this setting and is all the more necessary because of it.

Experiencing God is very practical and helpful for anyone who is longing to have a closer and personal walk with Christ. So it is refreshing that Smith anchors his spirituality in the faith confessed and nurtured by the Word of God and practiced in the world.

That connection comes through consistently on these pages. Unlike most books, this one was not written by a theologian or by someone who has practiced and taught spirituality in quiet surrounding—though such guides are not to be despised.

Doing The Greater Work was written by a Pastor who felt called by God and who also felt a need to undergird that work by learning to draw strength from God. As a result, the product is a great tool for preachers, teachers, laypeople and anyone desiring to have renewed relationship with God.

It is, as he admits, an example of his deep commitment to the Kingdom of God, therefore easy for us imperfect folks to relate to.

I say that with some conviction because this is a book written by a man who has experienced the purpose of God, walked the path of experiencing God and has a desire to help others develop the mindset of Christ.
