About this ebook

We are instructed to be ready and alert for Christs return, but just what does that mean?

Jesus gives us the signs to look for that would indicate that His return is near. We can also observe the political, economic, and moral trends and compare them to what the Bible says will be in place in the last days.

The seven seals provide a framework for the events of the last days and parallel the signs that Jesus gave us in Matthew. Prophecies in Daniel describe the final world kingdom and its transition into a dictatorship. Revelation talks about a mark that is required to buy or sell anything.

This book puts it all together in a succinct way that is easy to follow so that we might know the signs and be ready for His return.

    Preface

See to it that no one misleads you. It’s the initial response that Christ gave the disciples when they asked Him about His return. We are to guard against the deception of those days. The only way we can hope to do that is with an understanding of the truth. God’s word is truth.

The objective of this writing is to help the body of Christ discern the times and be prepared for His return as He instructed us to. It is the Holy Spirit who is to persuade and lead people into an understanding of the truth and to reveal the things to come. I trust that He will do so with this booklet to the extent that what is written herein is true and that the reader is open to that truth.

There are some fundamental concepts in scripture, which when they are incorporated into the discussion of end time prophecy turn a confusing subject into something more easily understood. These concepts have to do with the effect that the spiritual realm has upon the natural. Prophecy is written from a viewpoint that sees both the spiritual and the natural side of things. Some emphasize one and some the other. If we are to understand prophecy, we need to be aware of this cause and effect relationship and discern accordingly. We aren’t given a whole lot of information about the spiritual realm but the glimpses that we are given prove invaluable when we apply them where they are relevant. The first chapter expounds upon this idea and is critical, I believe, in explaining a subject that meshes together the spiritual and the natural.

With the knowledge that prophecy can refer to either something behind the scenes or something that we can see, or both, we can apply that understanding to different prophecies and get a clearer picture of what to expect in the days, months, and years preceding Christ’s return.

Certainly, much more could have been written on the subject, however, I decided to focus on those aspects I consider relevant to discerning the times and being ready. It’s a framework for the things to come, as I understand prophecy. Everyone has their thoughts on the subject. These are mine, and why I think them.

    The Complete Picture

And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha. 2 Kings 6:15-17

I don’t think we can fully appreciate or understand prophecy without being aware of what’s going on behind the scenes. Like Elisha’s servant in the above passage, we don’t realize what’s happening in the spiritual realm because we don’t have any way to perceive it. It wasn’t until God opened the servant’s eyes that he was able to catch a glimpse into the unseen.

Because we cannot see the spiritual realm or study it, and we don’t really understand how it works, we largely ignore it in favor of the natural realm. While this might get us through our day to day existence, it will not serve us well in the study of end time prophecy. Prophecy is written from God’s all-knowing perspective and speaks about things that are seen as well as things that are unseen.

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

The things that we see are temporary, but the unseen things are eternal. I guess you could say that the unseen spiritual realm is actually more real than the natural realm, which we can see even though it’s not as well understood by us. Consequently, we need to be aware that prophecy will often mesh together the natural and the spiritual, the seen and the unseen.

One example of this is when God instructed Ezekiel to prophesy the demise of the leader of Tyre. His sins are listed and his defeat is foretold. Then God has Ezekiel take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre. What Ezekiel then describes is the fall of Satan. God is showing us in this passage how the unseen spiritual realm affects the natural; how Satan influenced the leader of Tyre. This prophecy and lamentation is found in Ezekiel 28. Another such passage is in Isaiah 14 where the inhabitants of Israel take up a taunt against the king of Babylon. This taunt likewise goes on to describe the fall of Satan.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Ephesians 6:12

Even though we cannot see what is going on behind the scenes, we know that the forces of evil are working to influence us in a manner that is contrary to the will of God. This can be seen when Peter didn’t understand the need for Jesus to die and rise again.

From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto
