    FOREWORD

Reading 28,000 Days by Kara Ferrier ignited something in me. I came to the US at 12 years old, and in many ways my journey is similar to Kara’s. In a sense, I, too, lost my father at the age of 14 years old. He walked out of our lives and has yet to return. I am 35 years old. His absence and life’s challenges propelled me to delve into personal development books from my teen years until today. In addition to my mother, I feel like some of my favorite authors raised me, although I have never met them. It is truly a joy and an honor to actually know my new favorite author, Attorney Kara Ferrier. Our first meeting was as attorney and client. We immediately recognized that we were of the same flock. Our common expressions quickly revealed that we read a lot of the same books. We are also Haitian professionals of the same generation with a love of helping people. I immediately invited Kara to be a guest speaker to a young group I founded, Circle of Leadership and Excellence (CLE). She showed up beaming with enthusiasm and instantly connected with the youth. They also could not stop talking about how beautiful she is. Kara is a rare gem full of heart and intellect. Knowing all of this about Kara, I played pretend a bit while reading the book. I imagined that I never met this author and started reading the book with no specific expectation.

I had no idea the book would get me to identify less with what I do for a living and explore my talents outside of work. I have worn the identity of Acupuncture Physician for the past 10 years, and lately I have been sensing that I should explore some of my more artistic talents including writing.

The chapter about our subconscious mind being our link to God is so crucial for the Haitian culture where many are prone to be more dogmatic and religious. This concept alone can change an entire generation. When I met Attorney Ferrier, I spent weeks listening to The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy in search for a new attorney for an important case. I was not searching on the outside; instead, I went within trusting that the Universe would match me with a like minded attorney. Sure enough, another like-minded friend of mine introduced me to Kara. When we met, I had no doubt that she was the right attorney for me. She lives and breathes the concepts from her book, and it oozes from every sentence that comes out of her mouth. She references The Power of Your Subconscious Mind in this book, the very book that led to our connection.

In a culture that pathologizes normal day to day pain, sadness, and ennui, this book reminds us to go through our challenges with grace knowing that no matter how dark the night, we can create our dawn. Haiti can look like a brand new country, the day each of us takes full responsibility for our own success and completely dismiss the notion that someone or something other than ourselves can steal our dreams. Kara’s vision for Haiti has me raising my hands asking where I can sign up to contribute. This book is crucial for both the Haitian professionals who have gotten too comfortable with the status quo and for those waiting for our help at home.

My favorite chapter is the one on gratitude. Gratitude is the bridge that can take us from any negative feeling to a positive one. I practice gratitude daily, and even started a gratitude group on Facebook called Gratitude Groupies. I have seen firsthand the transformative power of gratitude. I could go on and on about gratitude, but chapter 9 already echoes all that I believe and I practice.

This is the kind of book you can read in a day. It is also the kind of book you can take months to read by meditating on each chapter and applying each concept to specific areas of your life. The chapter on paradigm shift is one that I need to spend more time with. This book is like a beautiful meadow. Each day, the meadow promises a new flower, a new bird, a new breeze; something that was not there the day before. I have read enough books to know that each time I open this book to read a chapter; it will ignite something new in me. This one is staying by my nightstand for the next 90 days and more since I have new dreams that must come to pass.

I started reading the book pretending like I did not know Kara in order to be fair in my assessment. By chapter 10, I could not stay in character anymore. I finished the book with actual tears in my eyes; tears of joy and extreme pride. I am so proud of you Kara for being obedient and bringing forth this most important work to our people, and to all people. I now see that God used my debilitating accident to connect us for a much greater purpose.

Some authors write from the head and some write from the heart. The works of those who write from the heart tend to remain with us centuries later. This book is Kara’s creation straight from her heart and soul, and I know it will touch countless lives for a long time to come.

    INTRODUCTION

I first heard the cliché Everything happens for a reason when I was 14 years old. Friends and family were attempting to comfort me after my dad was brutally murdered in his hometown of Thiotte, Haiti. The day was Saturday, November 9, 1996. I remember it like it was yesterday. My father was due back home from a three-day trip to Thiotte. As the manager of a prominent coffee company in Haiti, he traveled quite frequently to several of the country’s provinces where coffee plantations were located. He dropped my sister and me off to school that Thursday morning, told us how much he loved us, and promised to be back home on Saturday, God willing. (That was something he said after practically any sentence speaking into the future.) Saturday came, but my father failed to show up to pick up my then 5 year-old little brother from
