ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
To Mary Wicker, my wife and best friend in life, thanks for your continued support during the writing of this book. To the countless individuals that were willing to discuss the subject of perception. Finally, I would like to thank all of the college professors for adding suggestions and comments to this book.
INTRODUCTION TO PERCEPTION
People interpret facts differently; all situations are not viewed as difficult by most people. We are all individuals and see the world differently through very different eyes. Sometimes we experience frustration when people do not view the world as we do. However, do we really expect people to view the world as we do? What would happen if all people viewed the world the same? Problems would not exist; there would be no conflicts, disagreements, or wars. Smooth sailing. Correct!
I ponder the thought when I view a television show like Judge Judy or Judge Mathis. Two people are in conflict with each other, and the judge in the middle tries to settle their dispute. If we all perceived situations the same, there would be no need to disagree; the judge would arrive and say this dispute has been resolved; and everyone would agree—end of case. Or would there no longer be a need for a judge, lawyer, or conflict mediator? Wouldn’t we simply present our side to the other party, and he or she would agree? Sounds like a great world if it were true; however, we know our world is very different, and most people have very different perceptions and views about events.
Our perception of most situations is not correct. It does not matter what we see on television, listen to on the radio, or listen to an actual account of facts. Perception is influenced by our past experiences, history, and our environment. A good example is
