About this ebook

Each days study begins by presenting a passage from the Scriptures that highlights the days theme. Space in the book offers the student the opening for praying as the Spirit leads. A text offers focus for the days study, guides the reader through selections from the accounts of Abrahams life, and provides insights illuminating the details of the Bibles narrative. Questions provide the reader with opportunities to probe his or her understanding of the text and to reflect upon the application of biblical passages to daily life.

    INTRODUCTION

Some may say that no man’s life has been more profoundly influential to generations to come than that of Abraham. Apart from the Lord Jesus Christ, this man’s presence on earth may have had farther-reaching impact than any other man throughout the course of time.

One might wonder how one common person like you or me could be used by God in such an uncommon way. How could that human be allowed to hear the voice of God in such a manner that in the end no person or purpose was allowed to speak louder?

Abram—whose name God later changed to Abraham—was a descendant of Seth, the son of humanity’s first man and woman, Adam and Eve. God set Abraham apart for Himself to become the nation of Israel. From this nation would emerge the promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. He heard and heeded the voice of God in such a way that the future for mankind became one of hope and redemption instead of hopelessness and despair.

Those alive during the time of Abraham likely would not have known the significant role that this man was to play in God’s redemptive plan for all mankind. Could anyone have known that salvation for sinful man would rest not upon the forthcoming Old Testament Law but upon the fulfillment of that Law, Abraham’s seed Jesus Christ? Surely Abraham himself did not immediately understand his part in the marvelous story of God’s great reclamation. And he could not have known how his faith in Almighty God would largely determine the very destiny of his own life.

As we journey together through this four-week study, my prayer for you will be that God Himself will grant you a new and greater understanding of God’s wonderful story of redemption. And through this revelation may you begin to recognize the important part that the Old Testament patriarch Abraham played in that amazing story.

His biblical story begins as God commanded Abraham to leave his ancestral home and to travel and possess the land of Canaan. But even upon his arrival at the Promised Land, opposition awaited. We will witness, as we follow the journey of Abraham’s life, that while he became the father of this great nation, his life, though divinely chosen, was really no different than yours and mine. Like so many others it was filled with certain strife and trials as well as normal everyday struggles. Family feuds, marital issues, and even financial woes are certainly nothing new to our generation, and we will read of these very types of incidents playing out in the life of Abraham.

Much of his story includes his experiences in regard to relationships—with a wife, a nephew, his wife’s maid, two
