    You are grounded for a week! the mother cried desperately.

    Really?! Ali thought trying to figure out what could be implied by the word ‘grounded’.

    For kids in his society ‘grounded’ meant nothing. Parents could try to hide their video games, laptops, or even their cell phones but still they had several other things which made it impossible to control teenagers’ ambitions to run away from studying.

    Sometimes Ali felt sorry for himself and his friends. Deep inside he liked to study but he would feel bored whenever he opens a textbook. It had been eight weeks since the beginning of the school year and he did not know anything about the content of his history textbook. This morning, his mother met his history teacher at the local market and the teacher told Ali’s mother that he failed the first monthly exam. He tried to explain that he does not like history but his mother got furious and hit him with her slipper. Her words flew with the slipper echoing in the whole house:

    Your family is one result of that history. If you can live ignoring that history I cannot hope that you’ll be of any good to this family. Get out.

    Ali spent the whole afternoon wondering near the old mosque which stands on the side of the Tigris two streets away from his house. He sat in the shade of the wall of the mosque thinking of the last sentence of his mother. His eyes were fixed on the little waves hitting the sands near the bank. He tried to follow the stream of the water and wondered
