Working with Smes: A Guide to Gathering and Organizing Content from Subject Matter Experts
()
About this ebook
Gathering information about a subject and collecting that information from experts is the core process involved in writing a valuable corporate training program. When an instructional designer is writing training that is dependent on the knowledge of others, it is helpful to have schedules and plans for communication, accuracy, and accountability. Working with SMEs offers a framework on how to connect with the correct experts and uncover what they know. The book then gives you the tools and checklists necessary for getting the most out of your subject matter expert.

I owe a tremendous amount to many people, especially all the subject matter experts with whom I’ve had the pleasure of working. I’ve learned training by working with some very gifted instructional designers, trainers and facilitators, truly experiencing earn while you learn
with some of the best in the industry. It’s been an exciting journey.
First, and most importantly, is a wonderful friend and mentor, Jonena Relth, who served as a leadership evangelist and President of TBD Consulting, Inc. from 1991 until her retirement in 2014. Jonena signed on as co-author for the first edition of this book. While she still occasionally can be found online chatting about leadership and training issues, she is mostly a lady of leisure now enjoying her time in beautiful Southern California. No acknowledgment of others can begin without recognizing her influence on contributing advice and content, especially to Chapter 7 where many of TBD’s tools and charts have provided the basis for what exists there today.
Beyond Jonena, I owe a special note of gratitude to several people for encouraging me and, in some cases, pushing me to get this second edition ready for prime time. Their order of appearance in no way reflects the importance of their contributions.
Much gratitude is due my primary editor and dear friend, Robin Warshaw. Robin is a truly gifted writer and editor; she is, in fact, a writer’s editor because she leaves your voice intact, scrubs the glaring grammatical errors and inconsistencies, and questions the value and context of content. She’s a pro. Thank you, Robin!
Some of the changes in this edition are the work of the quality control maven at TBD, Heather Rodriguez. Heather’s impeccable line editing made its way into this edition, and I am grateful for her contribution.
Special thanks are due
