    Mikes Obsession - A.W. Snow

    Chapter 1

I’ve been following her now for the past 5 months I guess, purely by accident of course. I was transferred here from Seattle 6 months ago but it took some time to get paperwork transferred and everything in place before I could start my new job. I was anxious to get back behind the wheel and get acclimated to the area again.

I was actually born in Minneapolis but my parents moved to Seattle when I was just 5. My dad wanted to keep an eye on his company out there so they packed up and we left. His twin brother Zach was in charge of the company business here and dad was confident that everything was running smoothly. Now, dad was still ‘in charge’ of things being president and CEO but, he knew he could trust his brother.

When I was old enough dad started teaching me about the business hoping I’m sure, to join in the business and one day take over for him. I had no other siblings so it was just mom, dad and me. Which was great because we did a lot together. Dad taught me how to play baseball and in high-school I made team captain and pitcher. That didn’t hurt considering the girls were always around. Mom taught me how to cook and she was an excellent cook. I never heard dad complain once. But, he sure made a fuss about me being in the kitchen learning how to cook. ‘Pish posh’ he’d say, why are you teaching that boy how to cook, he’s a handsome kid he’ll grow up to be a handsome man. What woman wouldn’t want to cook for him? That was my queue to leave because mom would always say that I needed to know how to do everything for myself. ‘What if the woman he meets doesn’t cook, do you expect him to go out for every meal, I should think not.’ Dad would always walk up behind her then, put his arms around her and give her a kiss.

I would make my exit and go outside to see if there was anyone else from the neighborhood out. If not I’d ride my bike and see what I could find to occupy my time with.

It was probably 2 weeks after that incident that dad found me in the back yard fussing with an old car and asked, so, Mike you ready to come to the office with me and start learning how things run, I was thinking you could ride in with me tomorrow being it’s Saturday and no school, the office would be pretty quiet, I could show you around and you could get a feel for the place. I was 15 then and dad thought it was time for me to start thinking about what I wanted to do. Sure dad, we can do that. What part are you gonna show me first, the mail room? I said sheepishly. I should, make you start from the ground up. He grabbed the rag I had on the bench behind me and threw it at me laughing. We’ll leave at 7 a.m., can you be ready by then? Yes sir. I went back to fussing with the car.

Up and at um Mike, it’s six o’clock. I’ve got some breakfast started so we can eat before we head out.

Ok dad, give me 10 and I’ll be down.

The ride in was full of questions from both of us, mainly from me though. I think dad was reconsidering his suggestion to have me go in with him.

Once there I marveled at the size and splendor of the building. You designed this one didn’t you dad?

Yes I did son, and I hope that you’ll take an interest in it also. Your grandfather started this company from the ground up. We both stopped in the main lobby and just gazed around, me with pure amazement and dad with pride.

I learned a lot from my father about the business and started working there full time right out of high school.

That was 25 years ago now, mom and dad were both killed in a car accident by a damn drunk driver. I still get a lump in my throat when I think about that. After that I decided to change my career path. Dad had everything in his will concerning the company and if I didn’t want to remain running the company then it would be bought out by his business partners.

I did alright when it came to the buyout and the insurance policies my parents had. So I put in for a transfer and ended up back in Minnesota.

That’s when I saw her. I was driving East bound on I94 and almost hit another car, luckily they didn’t notice that, I hope. It was spring time and she had her window down just a little, her hair blowing just enough that she had to push it back behind her ear. I could see her bopping her head side to side ever so lightly and tapping her fingers on the steering wheel, enjoying the song playing I guessed.

I was mainly responsible for the I94, I494 and I694 loops. Although we could be called to any area at any time if close enough or if the need called for it.

I tried to pay attention to where she was going and what route she took. I wanted to make sure it was not just a one-time sighting.

For about the next 3 weeks it was like clockwork, I pulled onto the freeway as she was passing my exit, I couldn’t have planned it better. Our schedules had to be similar. I would make sure to stay back just a little so she wouldn’t think I was following her. A few times I would be in the lane next to her and glance over when I thought it was safe. But why wouldn’t it be, I’m a State Trooper after all. A light smile pulling at my lips.

One day about 5 months of driving in around the same time, I decided to follow her to work, at least, that’s where I assumed she was going every morning at 6 a.m.

There was a 2 week period there about 2 months prior that I hadn’t seen her, so I figured she was on vacation, at least I hoped that’s what it was.

I was right. I followed her in on 94 then she exited where she had before then again on her last exit. She followed it around to where she gets off and took a right. Finally pulling into a parking lot, she parked on the east side of the building that sat in front of some clinics, I had no idea what it was though, there were no signs on the building. I pulled into the lot and parked right by the exit so I could see her when she got out of her car. When she did I almost swallowed my gum, I had to spit it out so I wouldn’t choke on the shit.

She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. Something was different though, the hair, she’d had it cut and it was now short, all spiked up in the back. That was a new hot in itself. It also looked to be a lighter brown. But from where I was parked it was hard to be sure. She wore a smart looking blue suite with a knee high skirt, it looked to be tailored to her body and it hugged her curves in all the right places, long trim legs and one hot, tight ass. Then she disappeared into the building.

My radio squawked and I had to go on a call.

My next 3 weeks were busier than I had expected. So I had to quit my ‘stalking’ behavior as some people might call it. I laughed to myself and couldn’t stop a smile from parting my lips. So I would break off and get to work. Speeders, accidents, and a hostage situation. I hadn’t been involved in one of those for 6 years. It all turned out though. They have an excellent group of negotiators and detectives in our unit.

Hey, Mike, come here for a minute. The voice came from behind me and I didn’t recognize it until I turned around.

Hey there Brian, how are things in your world?

Mike, I’ve been talking to some people and they have really been talking you up.

What do you mean, talking me up, with a hint of confusion in my tone?

We’ve had some guys take transfers to other departments, and, I was wondering if you’d be interested in trying out for detective?

I didn’t know what to say, so it took me a minute to collect my thoughts. I thought you had to be with the unit for a longer period of time than what I’ve been here for.

Just then, my mind switched to her. Would I be able to find her again? Would I ever meet her? Hell, I didn’t even know her name.

Wow, this comes as a total surprise, can I take some time to think this over?

Don’t take too long Mike, I really think you’d do a hell of a job.

Thanks Brian, I’ll think about it and get back to you.

Thankfully it was only Monday so I had at least one week to mull this over in my head. Is this something I wanted to do? I enjoy what I do but, I could get involved in more in-depth cases. Wow, my head started aching. I had to pull off and get a Coke and think.

I have to make some kind of move to meet her. But, when and how could I do that. Damn it Mike! Just do it, you have to get these what ifs out of your head. I’ll do it Wednesday, I’ve got an informational meeting tomorrow morning for this detective stuff. And then, I had to let my captain know I was even thinking about this. Aghh!

Wild thoughts flooded my brain, were her lips soft, what did she look like naked, would she quiver under my touch, how did she sound? What did she like, what did she like to do? Shit man, you’re hopeless.

Tuesday morning, time to grab a coffee and head in.

At least this meeting was at headquarters so I didn’t have to try and find someplace new.

    Mike, over here.

Hey Brian, how are you this fine morning?

Just fine, come on, I want you to meet my captain.

Captain Williams, this is Mike McCarthy, the guy I was telling you about.

Mr. McCarthy. Captain Williams said as he reached out to shake my hand. How are you today?

    Just fine sir, and yourself?

The same, come on in and we can get this meeting started.

There had to be 12 other guys in the room.

Come on Mike, I’ve got a seat for you up here.

I followed Brian to the seat and sat down. A little nervous now. I know some of these guys and their service records are impressive. I’m sure I don’t have a chance in hell. I bent towards Brian and whispered.

Ok everyone let’s get settled and we can start with detective Olson.

Thank you captain, my name is Sean Olson and I’ve been with the force going on 20 years now. I just want to let everyone know that this is just an informational based meeting right now. The whole process will take approximately 4 weeks, with all the guys we have here. We’ve got some course ranges to test through, written portions, and of course, everyone’s favorite, range time. Some of the guys let out low yeah’s! Now, I don’t know how everyone came to be here, whether a referral, transfer request or you were approached by one of us. But, we only have 4 openings at the moment due to our own guys transferring or retiring.

Okay, I’ve got a few packets here to hand out so if you would take one and pass them back, here are the last two, take one and pass the rest back. One of the packets has some pages to sign and return, so take these home read through them jot down any questions you may have and bring them to the next meeting, Brian do you have the schedule of when that is?

Yes, that will be this Friday, same time same place.

So I’ve got today and 2 more to read through this and make up my mind I thought to myself with a heavy sigh, man what am I going to do?

I needed to see her again to help get my head around this. That’s it then, I’m going to go through with my plan and follow her in to work tomorrow. When I get there I hope I know what to say.

    Chapter 2

Another day another dime I said as I walked into our office. I heard Tiffany laugh out loud and say ditto. How are you today Megan? Beth asked.

I am doing just splendid today Beth and how about you? The same she said.

So what do we have for accounts today? I guess I was asking anyone in the office who felt like answering me.

500 more accounts landed in the work load today after the files ran last night. Tiffany stated. Ugg I let out a loud groan as I put my things away and booted up my computer.

Do we know why there are so many lately, has anyone talked to IT?

I’m not sure said Beth. I sat there waiting for the system to start up and thought to myself of course not, we have a new supervisor who doesn’t know her own head from her ass, why would she contact anyone to let them know we have a problem.

That really burns my ass that after the old supervisor left I was told by the manager that she wasn’t going to interview me. Why not me? I’ve been here long enough, I know our systems and know health care! I wanted to scream! The system finally came up and I started logging into the programs I would need for the day and the different web sites that I would be going into.

So Beth, how is your husband doing after his accident?

He’s getting better, he just needs to learn that crutches don’t go as fast as you want them to.

I chuckled, so what did he try doing this time?

He thought he could race our son to the bathroom and he lost, put a damn hole in the wall. Everyone laughed and almost on cue, we all said, next time hire a professional. I’m going to. And she laughed also or I’m pretty sure she was going to start crying.

We all started before the supervisor came in so I asked Tiffany and Beth if they wanted to grab lunch today so we could get out of the office. Sure, sounds like a plan. They both said in unison.

At lunch it was not quite the same talk but, they both asked me if I wanted to meet someone they both knew. My head wanted to be elsewhere at that moment and I cringed to think who they knew and who they wanted to set me up with.

No, but, thanks anyways you two, I’ve got enough to keep me busy with work and my flower arranging. I lied but, the thought of being set up on a blind date made me want to vomit. I’ve heard horror stories and I wanted nothing to do with that.

Back at work we all plowed into the accounts and punched through all of the ones that had landed in the queue last night, plus a few more for good measure. The rest of the day was the same old shit, people asking me questions that have been asked day after day and that they should be asking the supervisor. Oh! but wait, we can’t ask her because she doesn’t know anything yet and she’s been here 8 months. God help me!

I went to the break room to grab a can of Diet Coke and stare out the window for a few minutes. My mind was swimming in a million different directions. What should I do about my dating situation or rather, the lack of a dating situation? Should I take Tiffany and Beth up on the offer of a set up? Why wasn’t I good enough for the supervisor position, do I want to stay here much longer? Should I move out of state and try a new start somewhere else?

Someone walked into the break room and snapped me out of my haze so I went back to my desk, put on my head phones and listed to the music.

When I looked at the clock it was already 3p.m, Whoa! Where did the day go? Everyone else seemed to be off in their own world like I was and I heard others say, holy crap! I have to get these reports down to the cashiers before they leave for the day.

Does anyone else have anything to go down? Beth asked as she walked by our desks. All I heard were a bunch of no’s, not me but thanks anyways.

When she came back up we all started asking each other what their plans were for the night. This seemed to be a ritual with some but I played along
