I t is the summer of 1997. On a sunny and bright Friday afternoon on Long Beach Blvd. in Compton. DOLLAR BILL, the only white boy on the street, is walking his bike with one flat tire into a gas station. He is 11 years old, slim and tall for his age. A guy (CROW) and a GIRL pull up in a brand new Ford Expedition truck with 22" tires and chrome wheels and park by a gas pump

    CROW

    You want something inside, baby?

    GIRL

Yeah, get me a soda. Hey, who love you baby?

    CROW

    I know you do.

Crow exits the truck and walks over to Dollar Bill who is putting air in his tire and gives him dapps.

    CROW

What’s up lil’ homey, gimme some.

    DOLLAR BILL

What’s up Crow. Loan me some money, man, you rich.

    CROW

Look lil’ nigga, you gotta pump the gas first, then I’ll give you some paper.

Dollar Bill finishes putting air in his tire and walks over by the truck with his bike. Crow walks into the gas station. The girl is talking on her cell phone.

    GIRL

    (whispering)

Ok, he’s inside paying for gas now, so hurry up.

She quickly hangs up the phone. Crow walks out of the station with the soda in his hand and returns to the truck. Dollar Bill begins pumping the gas. Crow hands him money.

    CROW

Here’s five dollars lil’ cuzz and you better not spill no gas.

    DOLLAR BILL

Fuck you Crow. And thanks for the five. dollars big homey.

Crow gets back into the truck, handing the soda to the girl.

    CROW

I grabbed that one from the back, nice and cold.

    GIRL

    Crow, you so sweet.

    CROW

    That’s just my Compton charm.

A 1982 Oldsmobile Cutlass creeps into the gas station up to the drivers side window of Crow’s truck and stops, with the motor still running. Inside the car are two Mexican thugs. One jumps out of the passenger side with a shotgun and shoots Crow dead on in the face. His head is blown completely off, blood and tissue splattering everywhere. The girl begins screaming hysterically as the thug jumps back into the car which peals off, tires screeching. All around people are running and screaming Dollar Bill freezes and drops the gas nozzle on the ground

Three weeks later. Inside a run down house, in a small bedroom, Dollar Bill, in boxers, wakes up, jumps out of a bunk bed, walks into the bathroom, where he pees and brushes his teeth. He walks back into the bedroom, throwing on his clothes, then walks through the living room, heading toward the front door. His MOM enters the living room from the kitchen and glares at him.

    MOM

Where do you think you are going this early in the morning Dollar?

    DOLLAR BILL

I’m goin up the street to play, can I?

    MOM

Yea, go ahead. But you better be home before those street lights come on. You got a five minute grace period.

    DOLLAR BILL

    Fo sho.

Dollar Bill walks out the door and up the streets of his neighborhood in Compton to another house where a guy (CEE) is hanging out. Dollar Bill walks up to him and gives him dapps.

    DOLLAR BILL

    What’s up Cee.

    CEE

What’s up lil’ homey You up early.

    DOLLAR BILL

Man I need some loot, Cee. Loan me some money or let me make some.

    CEE

Get the fuck outa here, white boy. How the fuck you gonna make some money, you too young.

    DOLLAR BILL

Gim’me a dope sack, Let me make some then.

    CEE

I’ll tell you what lil’ homey, you wanna make some paper?

    DOLLAR BILL

    Doin’ what?

    CEE

All you gotta do is sit on the fire hydrant across the street and look out for the police. Every time you see the po-po you holla at us and let us know. Can you do that?

    DOLLAR BILL

I can do that. But how do I make money by doin’ that bullshit?

    CEE

At the end of the day when you gotta go home, I’ll give you twenty dollars. Is that cool?

    DOLLAR BILL

Twenty dollars just to sit on the fire hydrant all day? Do I get a break?

    CEE

Every hour you can take a ten minute break.

    DOLLAR BILL

    When can I start?

    CEE

    Right now if you want.

    DOLLAR BILL

Can a nigga get half his money now in case the ice cream truck come by?

    CEE

You ain’t no nigga fool. You a white boy. You better watch who you say that shit to, Dollar, before somebody shoot your little white-black ass.

    DOLLAR BILL

Man I grew up here, ain’t nobody gonna fuck with me. I got back up for that ass. if they try.

    CEE

What back up you got? Your lil’ white dick as a pistol.

    DOLLAR BILL

Don’t be hatin’ cause my dick bigger than yours, fool.

    CEE

    Watch your mouth boy.

    DOLLAR BILL

Watch my mouth? I’m a lookout man for a drug dealer and I gotta watch my mouth. Fuck you Cee.

    CEE

Here’s two dollars, now get your ass on the fire hydrant.

Dollar Bill walks across the street and sits on the fire hydrant. Minutes later a beat up station wagon drives up and stops beside Dollar Bill. The driver (CRACKHEAD) says to Dollar Bill

    CRACKHEAD

    You got somethin’?

    DOLLAR BILL

    What you need?

    CRACK HEAD

    I need a dove.

    DOLLAR BILL

    Hold on for a minute.

Dollar Bill runs across the street, knocking on Cee’s door. Another guy (E) answers the door.

    DOLLAR BILL

    Where’s Cee.

    E

He in the shower, what you want Dollar?

    DOLLAR BILL

There’s a twenty dollar sale out here waitin’!

    E

    Hold on

E closes the door for a moment then opens it, handing Dollar a little piece of dope in rock form.

    E

Give him this. Is he walkin’ or drivin’?

    DOLLAR BILL

    He drivin’

    E

Make sure he turns the car off first and have him show you the money, so he can’t snatch the dope and drive
