    CHAPTER 1

For the first time in months John and Melody could relax, their office was being run by the assistant manager from Johns Manchester office and he was doing a marvellous job. All the new employees were pitching in and doing a great job and the office now had enough work to keep them busy well into the next year. John Simpson owned a successful photographic business and did a lot of work for the Home Countries Tourist Boards. As well as being, a successful businessperson John was also involved in a completely different project. Nearly three years ago, Johns Father was seriously ill with a rare strain of leukaemia and was not, expected to live. John was travelling to his parent’s house in the Forest of Dean to be with his father, when he literally bumped into a wizard from a Parallel Dimension.

The wizard disappeared and then three people from the same dimension appeared and asked Johns help in capturing the wizard who was trying to take over the other world. In repayment for his help, they cured Johns Father and he was now in the best of health. It appeared that the all those from the parallel world were in a power struggle and would cause major problems in this world no matter who won.

John was, contacted by Merlin, who was the legendry wizard from King Arthur’s court and Merlin warned him about them, Merlin told John that they were not as friendly as they appeared. He was then, given help to rid this world of all the intruders, and he was, given a powerful and beautiful ring, which allowed him to perform magic and to defend himself against attack. John was, asked by Merlin to help him to keep this world free from the attentions of parallel worlds and was, given extra powers to help with this.

Melody, John’s wife was also given the same powers as John and together they had rid the world of many intruders and dangerous Satanists. The two of them had recently been given additional power by Merlin which put them on a par with him and they were now very powerful and no longer relied on the rings. They were now able to handle any problem from diverse dimensions without having to rely on Merlin too much. Things had been building up over the last few months with a great deal of work coming in for his photography business which required managing as well as dealing with different types of travellers from across the dimensions.

John has taken on extra staff to handle the workload in his business and because his present office is too small for the number of staff he required he is now having a new office block built fairly close to his and Melody’s home as the office to the rear of their home was not really suitable for expanding as it would spoil the look of their home. Melody objected to expanding their office as she wanted their home to look like a home not a business a sentiment to which John agreed. Land was available about half a mile from their home so John bought it and commissioned the new office block.

John’s sister Dorothy was joining the firm full time from Monday as she had just finished at university and would be running the southern office once she had settled in and was confident she could do it. The assistant manager from John’s Manchester office would be staying on for a couple more weeks to help out until all the new staff was fully trained and Dorothy was happy to take command.

John and Melody had spent the last couple of weeks in Ireland checking on the work being done in the village of Dungar in County Tipperary. By the time they left Dungar they were satisfied that everything was going to plan and was being controlled well. The new mini supermarket/post office was nearly finished and John had recruited the woman who had previously run the village shop to be the manager of the new business. John had explained to Peter Finnegan the lord of the manor that as the woman had run the previous shop for many years she could be relied on to manages the business without too much trouble.

The work to convert Sean’s bar into a hotel was progressing well and should be ready to open by the middle of the summer. Work on the new leisure centre had now started in earnest but that project would take over a year to complete and funding for the new leisure centre was now been shared equally between John and Peter Finnegan.

John and Melody were sitting in their lounge relaxing after dinner when John turned to Melody and said.

Well love we will have to have a look at that problem in Kent it is getting near the time when the portal will be activated.

True but we don’t yet know where the portal will appear, I don’t think that it will be in the grounds of the Williamson family near St Mary in the Marsh. Even the lord of the manor callus as he is will not be so foolish as to allow that.

You are probably right but they will choose a place fairly close as they will need the coven to be in attendance.

Probably one of the older abandoned churches or cemeteries with a church in it, preferably one, that is no longer in use, replied Melody

Tomorrow morning I will ring, the Lamb, remember the landlord said that he would have accommodation when we returned to do our research for your book.

The following morning dawned rather misty and chilly, autumn was really here and there was quite a heavy ground frost. As it was Sunday morning John thought he should wait until later in the day before he rang the Lamb.

Melody agreed and said that after midday would be better as the inn would be open for business then.

As we have a bit of time to spare it might be a good idea to take a trip down to the hotel in Tenby just to make sure that there are no more ghosts around.

Good idea I haven’t had a good look around there all I have seen so far is the reception and the basement.

We had better get some casual clothes on as you know how dirty it is at the moment.

While we are there I will have a think about the best way to renovate it and when we have finished in Kent we will give Bill a ring and arrange a meeting.

The hotel was just as they remembered it though there was no menace about the place and all appeared peaceful. They spent a couple of hours looking around and discussing how the hotel could be modernised and still, keep its eighteenth century charm. Melody made a number of notes to remind them of what they had discussed when they met with Bill and they both agreed that it was a worthwhile exercise.

On returning home cook told them that lunch would be in about an hour and on checking the time John found that it was twenty past twelve. Melody said that she was going to have a shower and John replied that he would ring the Lamb and book their rooms initially for one week from tomorrow at half board with the option of extending the time if necessary. The landlord of the Lamb was glad to hear from John and told him that he had reserved their best on-suit room for them and looked forward to seeing them.

John smiled as he knew that it was a quiet time of the year and then replied that they would be arriving sometime in the afternoon and they would require dinner that night. On finishing the call John went upstairs for a shower just as Melody was leaving the bathroom. John told her what he had arranged and she said that as it was a long drive to Kent he was not committing himself to a specific arrival time,

After lunch John and Melody decided to go to the nearest sports centre and have a quick game of squash as a way of relaxing and getting rid of a few pounds which Melody had said that they had put on lazing about for a few weeks. That night John and Melody had a visitor; both woke at one fifteen in the morning to find Merlin standing at the bottom of their bed.

I am sorry to wake you but I have some important news for you connected with your job in Kent. About five miles from St Mary in the Marsh is a cemetery which is not now used, the portal is there. It is off of a road called Jefferstone Lane close to a railway station on the outskirts of St Mary’s Bay. The coven will meet there tomorrow at midnight.

The image of Merlin faded away.

    CHAPTER 2

Monday morning after breakfast Dorothy arrived in her company car and joined John and Melody in the office. John explained that they had an important Job to do in Kent and they could be away for a couple of weeks and asked her if she could stay in the house until they returned in case there were any important massages.

If there were any messages to contact The Prime Minister, Home Secretary or Jane in Barnstable then John asked her to ring him straight away on his mobile. He explained that he would probably have it set on silent so if the answer machine came on to leave a message and he would get back to her as soon as possible.

Once the remainder of the staff arrived John checked to find out if there was anything that needed his or Melody’s immediate attention and the assistant manager from Manchester who rejoices in the name of Alistair said that he would need a couple of write-ups completed within a fortnight. The write ups were to complete the contract in Yorkshire which John and Melody had started for the Yorkshire police. He said that the Manchester office had all the photos and just needed the write-ups.

Melody said that she had all the information on those write-ups and she would complete the write-ups while she was away and Email them to the office as soon as she could which would probably be later in the week. Everything else was up together and so they left Dorothy to go through the running of the office with the Manchester man and set off for Kent with Melody driving. Their new car was a great drive but as it was a long journey, they stopped half way for lunch and then John took over for the remainder of the trip.

John and Melody arrived at the Lamb Inn at about four o’clock and they were greeted by the landlord Reg Brown and his wife May. Reg said that May would show them to their room and when they had freshened up there would be a welcome drink waiting for them in the bar. The room was in fact a suit which had a large bedroom, sitting room, a small kitchenette and a bathroom and it was tastefully furnished and smelt of sea breezes. May asked if they were happy with the accommodation to which Melody replied that they were very happy.

Melody said that they would get washed, and freshen up as they had, had a long journey and they would be down in about half an hour to sign the register. May asked them what they would like to drink when they came down and John said that they usually drank white rum and coke in a long glass with ice, as a thirst quencher. Once they had showered and dressed they descended to reception to sign in but they didn’t use their real address just in case the ungodly decided to find out who they really were, if they suspected that they weren’t exactly all they appeared to be. John used his Manchester office address, and after they had signed the register they went into the lounge where a couple of cold drinks awaited them.

After about a quarter of an hour the Landlord came over to their table after first checking that no one else was in the room and asked if he could join them. John said that of course he could and he could probably point them in the direction of interesting buildings and scenes’ to photograph for Melody’s book. Once he had seated opposite them he passed over a piece of paper with a number of addresses on it.

The landlord said that those addresses were places that people said they had heard strange music and seen weirdly dressed people. John had a quick look at the list and sure enough the cemetery that Merlin had mentioned was at the top.

Are you really here to take photographs and do write up’s for your book, he asked.

We will be taking Photographs and doing write-ups,

Melody replied, What time is dinner?

Reg nodded, Seven o’clock, he replied.

John showed him his company card with the Manchester address on it but said that it was the only one he had with him so he could not let him have it. Reg nodded and said that he understood that they did not want their home address getting into the wrong hands and warned them to be careful of the Williamsons as they were not very nice people. With those words he left their table and went back behind the bar.

John and Melody arrived at the cemetery at eleven fifteen and noted that there was a road leading pass the main gate to the cemetery which was secured by a wrought iron gate on which was a large padlock. There was however a side gate to allow pedestrians access and it was open. There was a high chain fence surrounding the cemetery and in front of the fence was a low wall which was probably the original boundary.

Melody had her notebook with her and she and John became invisible and sat on the wall to await the arrival of the coven. Melody took out a pen and sat ready to make notes in the notebook to remind her, what information she should find out about the coven. Twenty minutes after they had seated themselves on the wall the coven started to arrive at the cemetery. Melody made a note of all the car numbers as they arrived and there were eight cars in all.

Once all the cars had arrived and switched of their engines the people in the leading car left their vehicle and led the way into the cemetery followed by the others, the time was eleven fifty five. There were twelve members of the coven standing silently in a semi-circle and one member standing in the front.

They were all looking toward the obelisk which was a war memorial to the local men and women that fell serving their country. Standing in front of the twelve, the lone figure was also looking toward the obelisk which commemorated service personnel from the First and Second World War. They were standing on the hard surface of the cemetery turning circle which was in front of a small church. The church had long since ceased being used, as all the services for those who had died in the local community were now carried out in the various churches in the area.

The cemetery was no longer accepting burials and many of the funerals in the area were now carried out at a large new crematorium which was only five miles away, or in local churchyards. All of those standing in front of the obelisk wore monk’s habits except for the lone figure in front who wore bright red robes and a grotesque golden mask. The lone figure looked up to the bright full moon and on his command the remainder started chanting in a strange language.

As they chanted the obelisk began to glow and a silver mist swirled from its centre, spinning faster and faster as the speed of the chanting increased. The mist spiralled out as if to form a tunnel so bright it began to hurt the eyes of the beholders. From the centre of the obelisk and down the tunnel came three figures the first two were male and dressed in some sort of military uniform. The two males were each carrying trident type weapons and they were followed by a female, but what a female. She was magnificent, standing about seven feet tall and dressed in a silver gown.

She had raven dark hair which seemed to give off bright red sparks and her hair was topped with a headdress containing two horns each about a foot long. The leader of the chanting group held up his hands and the chanting ceased.

We have answered your call O great one, how can we serve you?

The female replied, We are from a different dimension and we can give you the means of obtaining great power and wealth in your world by raising a demon but we will require something from you in return.

Please explain what you require and we will do our best to comply.

My name is Xzeron and I am from a world which has developed in a different way to your world. We have developed using natural sciences, what you would call magic that is how we are able to move between worlds in different dimensions by creating a magical portal. You have developed in a different way using science and engineering.

I have been asked to come here by my leader Gandor who is a great magician in my world. We control half of our world and the other half is controlled by three other magicians called, Rydon, Brend and Sharet. We have been in conflict for many years but now we have reached a stalemate we both have equal power and we want something to give us the edge.

With your great magic what will we possibly have that will give you the edge.

You have developed mechanically and we have not, my leader Gandor has been to this world before and he knows that you possess weapons that can strike over a great distance. These weapons cannot harm the great Magicians but they could destroy the armies giving us an advantage. In return for weapons we will give you the knowledge to raise the lord of the underworld. He would ask you to give him three sacrifices and in return he would give you three wishes. Find out where you can get these weapons that Gandor calls rifles and machine guns together with the ammunition and Gandor himself will visit here and give you the means of performing the ritual to bring the lord of the underworld.

We will return here at the same time in seven days so find the information by then.

At the end of her speech and without appearing to move the three withdrew back into the tunnel and the mist returned swirling back into the obelisk until it vanished and all was still. The leader of the coven bowed and withdrew and turned to his followers and said.

You have heard what has been said leave here now and find out where we can get a supply of weapons we can exchange for the knowledge we require and report back to me in two days.

One member of the coven spoke up and said.

There is an Ordinance Depot not ten miles from here where the army store all that we require and more but it is guarded twenty four hours a day how can we get what they require?

I am able to contact the other dimension without all of us performing this ritual, and will ask for a spell to put the guards to sleep which will allow us to get what we require. Leave here now and I will contact you all when I have the information we require. Leave here now and await my call, riches await us all but James, I want you to search out half a dozen young girls we will need them to perform the rituals. Bring them to me; I will put them in a trance until we need them.

James replied that he already had a couple in mind, they were on a late walking holiday and were staying at one of his bed and breakfast houses. They were leaving in a couple of days and he would have them grabbed once they had left the beaten track. He said that they had said they were heading toward Hythe which meant that they would travelling across country and once they were out of sight of the main road he would have them picked up.

James was told that a total of six girls were needed as they would need three to raise the Lord and three more to be presented to him to gain their wishes. The coven left the churchyard still dressed in their habits and masks and piled into their cars that waited in the rank outside the cemetery and drove away. The last to leave was the leader and one other who turned out to be his wife. Before they left the leader and his wife walked over to the small church and he preformed what appeared to be simple magic producing a large iron key far too large to go into a pocket and opened the door.

Let’s see what they have done I want to make sure that they have carried out my instructions everything must be ready in a few days to confine the girls. With the price they are charging me they had better have made a good job of the work I asked them to carry out.

    CHAPTER 3

All the trappings of a church had been removed; there were no pews or altar though a small organ still remained. The left hand side of the building had been adapted to accommodate eight small rooms each with a door but no windows, and on the outside of six of the doors were hasps and padlocks. The two people went into the first of the rooms which did not have a lock on it and removed their costumes and surprise, surprise; it was Mr and Mrs Williamson. Once Edward and Esmeralda had hung up their robes and mask’s on the rank of hooks around the walls they left the room and locked the door it had an ordinary rim lock with a key which Edward pocketed, and went to look at the other rooms.

The rooms with padlocks on them were all the same, each had a single bed with a thin mattress a couple of blankets and a pillow. There was also a small bedside locker on which was a small tray with a mug and a plate. The last room which only had a rim lock on it was a store room with racks fitted around three walls and it was empty.

Well they seem to have done a good job, said Mrs Williamson.

I would hope so the price they have charged me.

There is no point in complaining we couldn’t keep the sacrifices at our place nor can we perform the ceremony there. If word got out then we would be in real trouble, especially if the crypt was checked.

All right, all right I take your point but that doesn’t alter the fact that we have been over charged.

You may say that but remember they are working without their companies knowledge and taking a big risk. They still have to build the altar and transfer everything over here for the ceremony. You keep moaning that you haven’t a great deal of money but what about the cash you have salted away in your study.

That is for emergencies and is paying for all this, I have saved that cash over several years and it is proceeds from, shall we say less than legal operations.

"O yes the drug distribution outlets you are running in London and other places. You have never told me what you have been making from those enterprises.

It must be a great deal, but you won’t even pay for a couple of week’s holiday for your son and his wife."

Actually, I have changed my mind about that and it might be a good idea to have him out of the way while we raise the Lord of the Underworld. The boy could cause problems if he finds out what is involved; you know what he thinks of our actions.

He might even inform the authorities about the weapons if he found out. I will tell him that he can go on his skiing holiday and I will give him a thousand pounds spending money that should keep him quiet

They locked up the church and went to their car which was now on its own in the lane; all the others had left the lane by now. Mrs Williamson got behind the wheel and her husband sat in the passenger seat and they drove slowly away.

Edward looked at his watch and remarked that it was only one o’clock and he did not feel at all tired. He asked Esmeralda to drive to a twenty four hour supermarket which was close by to buy food and drink for the girls when they arrived, they had to feed them he supposed, they had to be in good condition for the ritual to work.

Well we certainly have learned a great deal about what is going on I think we should have a look around his study while they are shopping. One good thing is that the son does not approve of what his parents are up to.

Yes and I am glad that they are letting him go on holiday at least he will not be around when we sort his parents out.

How do you intend to deal with this problem the weapons are the major thing. We have to prevent them getting hold of the guns and ammunition.

I think that saving the lives of the young girls they intend to sacrifice is my first concern but of course we must stop them passing on weapons to Gandor. There is something though about these weapons sticking in the back of my mind, something is not quite right. I will have to give this some thought of course we could just close the portal but I don’t think that it would solve the problem as Gandor would just go somewhere else.

We have got to convince Gandor that we will not allow him to use people in this world to obtain weapons.

The guards were patrolling the grounds of the Williamson’s Mansion with dogs and there appeared to be two people on patrol at any one time. Also there were two others in the gatehouse sound asleep who would presumably be woken up when it was their turn to patrol the grounds. The house itself was in darkness though there were lights fitted to each corner which illuminated the majority of the grounds.

There were even lights on all four corners of the church and on the crypt. John and Melody stood in the grounds of the Williamsons property and looked at the house. A guard and his dog passed within a couple of yards of them but neither had seen them as they had remained invisible. John caught hold of Melody’s hand and instantly they were standing in the hallway. Using their night vision they had no need of a torch or anything else to see with.

The hallway was large and to their left side was an antique grandfather clock and to the right was an open door leading to the richly furnished lounge. Next to the clock was a closed door and further along the hallway was a second door once again closed, there was then a short passage running beside the stairs.

Straight in front of them was the staircase going up to a balcony and they could see two doors on the first floor. They could also see that there was a passageway going to both the right and left. The staircase had a bright red carpet fitted
