    Dimensions New - Leonard Kail

    CHAPTER 1

It had been a long hot summer with not a cloud on the horizon, but that was soon to change. John and Melody had spent the summer working within their company without the usual interruptions from Merlin or the government. Things were quiet, for the first time for a few years and they were able to take full advantage of this.

The company offices that had been located in John and Melody Simpsons garden had now moved to the new offices about half a mile away and things were going well, Things were also going well at Johns other office in Manchester and the company was attracting attention from two international companies.

The old offices had been pulled down and a new building was under construction attached to the side of the house and it was to be made to look part of the house. The building was to be large enough to accommodate a studio for John’s photographic work and an office for Melody’s research work. It would also incorporate a state of the arte photographic development room. John of course as a top photographer had many enquiries from the nobility and other wealthy people to do family portraits which he rarely accepted.

John’s main love was landscape photography and he had won many awards for his work. He had accepted one commission for family photographs to grace Christmas cards for the Prince of Wales but that was an exception. John and Melody had other interests in property they had a stake in. The main one they spent more time at than the others was a hotel in Cornwall the name of the hotel is Tintagel Castle Hotel.

Tintagle Castle Hotel is very important as a cave beneath the hotel is used by Merlin the magician from King Arthurs Camelot. Merlin has given John and Melody the same power as he possesses which they use to combat intrusions from other dimensions and they are able to keep the country secure from various enemies of freedom. Another problem was shortly to raise its ugly head though they were not yet aware of it.

Johns sister Dorothy was now running the companies new office and the original receptionist has been promoted to assistant manager. Their order book was full as one of their main contracts was to produce the tourist guides for all of the home countries. If there were any difficult photographs to be taken then John would do them himself. Melody would produce any historical write ups that were required. John and Melody also had interests in the village of Dungar in Southern Ireland where they had stakes in a motel, a leisure centre, and local shop. All the above information is detailed in previous books.

The 5th of September dawned cloudy with a chill wind summoning the start of autumn. During breakfast Melody suggested that they take a trip down to Cornwall and have a quiet day in the pool at the hotel and possibly visit Merlin whom they hadn’t heard from for a while. The air in front of them rippled and there stood the image of Merlin who smiled and said.

I was going to contact you as something has turned up could you drop in after lunch.

John smiled, No problem we will do as you ask we are getting bored so a new challenge will brighten up our days.

We look forward to seeing you again Merlin we thought you had forgotten about us, laughed Melody.

As they had plenty of time they decided to drive down to the hotel. They stopped at a service station on the M5 at about the half way point just outside Exeter for a drink and to stretch their legs. Melody then took over the driving and they arrived at the Tintagle Castle Hotel at about eleven forty five. They decided to order what they wanted for lunch and spend an hour or so in the pool before eating.

As they entered the hotel entrance they saw Jon the security manager who greeted them and said that he would tell Pete that they had arrived and wanted to order lunch. They said that they would be in the area of the pools bar and would see him there. The lagoon shaped pool was quite busy but they were able to find an unoccupied table and Melody sat down while John got a couple of drinks. He got their favourite which is white rum and coke in a tall glass with plenty of ice.

While John was getting the drinks Pete arrived and told the barman who was known to John to give them whatever they wanted and not to worry about payment. They after all were partners in the business, John refused and said partner or not he should still pay for what he had. Pete lifted his hands in submission and carried the drinks to the table. Melody said she would go and get changed while John told Pete what they wanted for lunch.

Will you be staying for dinner tonight as well John, tonight is curry night and we have a lovely beef curry and a drink is supplied with the meal.

Thanks but we have to get back home by six as I am expecting an important phone call.

He was not expecting a phone call but hated curry and did not want to hurt Pete’s feelings. Melody joined them having changed into her yellow swimsuit, the one that she had bought for their last holiday in Lanzarote and she attracted many admiring glances and a few envious ones as well.

John excused himself and went to get changed which only took him a few minutes. When he returned Pete left saying he would give their order to the chef and it would be ready at one o’clock. They left their towels on their chair and went for a splash about in the pool as it was after all a fun pool with a wave machine and water sprays.

While they were in the pool John noticed that two youths were hanging about their table and they lifted John and Melodies glasses which were full and started to drink from them. Melodies bag was under her towel and they made a grab for it and turned to run but got no further. John froze time and they stood like statues.

John and Melody left the pool and John retrieved the bag and restarted time after sitting the youths on their chairs. However the youths still found they could not move and John walked up to the bar and asked the barman to call the security manager. Jon arrived within minutes and John explained that the two young men had tried to steal Melody’s purse. John asked Jon to escort them off of the premises and make sure they were never admitted again. John released them and Jon escorted the two frightened youths from the pool area.

It was now almost one o’clock so John and Melody got changed and made their way to the dining room where they found Jon waiting for them carrying two drinks.

I took the liberty of getting you two drinks to replace those that were taken, don’t worry those boys paid for them. I don’t know what you did to them but they were eager to get away and promised never to come back.

Thank you Jon but keep an eye open for them, you can’t be in two places at once so I want you to advertise for a security guard to assist you here. I know it appears quiet but things can happen like today and we want to be on top of any problems.

Right sir I will get on to it straight away do you want to do the interviews yourself of whoever applies?

No but I want you to do a security check before you offer any one a job, and find out the correct rate of pay.

After a filling lunch they went down to the cellar and from there to Merlin’s cave. Merlin was seated in his usual chair and on the table where John and Melody usually sat were a couple of beakers of foaming liquid.

Sit down and refresh yourselves it will do you good after so long lazing about. You are going to need all your wits about you when investigating the little problem I have detected at Aberdale Castle near Edinburgh.

They did as Merlin asked and as usual the liquid was refreshing and they could feel it renewing their energy.

Well Merlin what is this little problem you are going to give us, asked Melody, is it anything to do with a witch executed in the seventeenth century?

For once Merlin was surprised, Have you been reading my mind, I thought I kept it closed?

Don’t panic, I read about a witch being burned at the stake near Edinburgh, remember history is my subject.

Well you are correct, this witch has been trying for some time to leave Hell where she was sent and has managed to create a portal and get the owner of Aberdale Castle interested in helping her at a price. You may know that the castle is rumoured to be haunted by the ghost of this witch who was called Bridie McDonall. Well the rumours are true and in the form of a spirit she has contacted Hamish Donovan. The laird of the castle is a practising Satanist and a rather nasty person.

Donovan has a wife and three children, two boys James and William they are both in their early twenties. They have a girl Mary who is nineteen and at university. The boys take great delight in upsetting the locals who are mostly tenants of Donovan. He owns most of the property within five miles of Aberdale Castle. If he manages to resurrect the witch she would take revenge on the local population whose ancestors condemned her even though she was evil and guilty as charged.

Donovan’s family did not own Aberdale Castle at the time of the witch’s execution they acquired the property much later. As the witch was burned she cursed the then ruling family and sure enough within a couple of years the family lost the property and many of them also lost their lives.

What is Donovan demanding in return for his help?

The usual things wealth and power, especially power. He is already a very rich man but he is also greedy he is always trying to squeeze the last penny from his tenants."

Your job is as usual, to close the portal and remove that man’s power which is considerable. If you can do anything to help the local people, all the better, you have until the next full moon which is in three weeks. You have nothing to fear from The Donovan family but I am sure they will put up a fight.

    CHAPTER 2

The journey to Edinburgh would take most of the day and even with them alternating the driving would be tiring. They decide on a different option and that was to book a rental car from a local car hire firm to be picked up at the airport at one o’clock thirty minutes after the flight from Bristol airport was due to arrive.

They transported to the airport at ten to one and each carrying a suitcase they walked out as if they had just arrived. The car waiting for them was a Renault Scenic which was the best car they had available. Once John had signed and had his licence checked they drove away.

Aberdale castle near Edinburgh was more like a large Manor house than a castle, though it had ramparts there was no way they could have been manned in the past. They had a quick look at the castle from a distance and then decided to look for some comfortable accommodation within a reasonable distance. They could have gone into Edinburgh but decided against that option mainly because they preferred a quiet area rather than the bustle of a city. They eventually decided on a hotel called Garth Mansion it was just outside a small place called Bonnyrigg.

It was only a three star hotel but it had a good write up in the local tourist guide. They managed to get a suit on the second floor which was not too bad as the hotel had a lift. The advantage of this hotel was that it was only three miles from Aberdale Castle and five miles from the hill where the witch was burned at the stake. They booked in the hotel for one week with the option of a second on a half board basis.

They decided to have a quick bar snack after getting cleaned up and then take a better look at Aberdale Castle without actually going inside. The hotel sold a fair selection of bar snacks and if they were prepared to wait they would do something more substantial. The manager said that all the food would be freshly cooked so it would take a while.

As they wanted to take a good look at the Aberdale castle estate they decided on a salad each John’s being ham and Melody’s cheese. They were told that the evening meal would be at seven and handed them a menu so they could select the meal they wanted. John ordered a T bone steak with all the trimmings and Melody went for something lighter a prawn omelette with chips and salad. They had fresh fruit juice with their lunch and told the manager they would be taking a look around the area as they loved historic buildings.

John asked if there were any haunted buildings in the area and was told that there were supposed to be quite a few but the manager dismissed them as figments of the imagination or publicity stunts. He said that he would compile a list of haunting’s in the area for them and have it ready for them later.

After lunch they left the hotel and started to walk toward an old looking church which was about half a mile away. The manager stood in the doorway of the hotel and watched them go so they actually entered the church grounds and started looking at the grave stones which were indeed old.

I don’t like the way that the manager was watching us, I wonder if the way he dismissed the possibilities of a haunting was to cover up something, said Melody.

Hamish Donovan would need a coven of thirteen and some young girls for the ceremony to raise the witch so he could be part of the coven. If so he will probably inform Hamish of our interest, we will see if any action is taken against us. They will probably do a check on us which will show that we have a photographic company and nothing more. Of course the manager may have nothing to do with witchcraft and he was just curious.

Some hope, I detected some hostility in him once haunting was mentioned, Melody remarked.

Aberdale Castle was surrounded by a formidable eight foot high wall surmounted by broken glass and anyone trying to get into the grounds that way could be badly injured. There was an electrically operated gate and a call panel with a CCTV camera. The area of the grounds were about five acres and to the side of the property was a stable block with six stalls each stall had a horse in residence. There were two young girls working in the stable yard which was spotless.

On each corner of the main house was mounted cameras and there were a couple of dogs in a run to the right of the gates. There was a notice on the gate which said ‘Entry by invitation only’, and ‘Beware of the dogs.’

Well it seems that they do not invite their neighbours to call round for a chat, unless they are part of the coven.

Let’s have a look around the grounds but watch out for the dogs?

Melody laughed at that remark as they transported themselves inside the gates remaining invisible of course. The grounds to the right of the long drive were laid to lawns. And something that surprised them was the croquet hoops. To the left of the drive were several trees and four flower beds laid out in the shape of a diamond. The driveway was quite wide and there was a parking area to the front of the building. The drive however continued right around the building.

Well it appears that the family certainly have money, can you do a check tomorrow Melody?

Of course, now let’s see if the inside is as well cared for as the grounds.

The hallway was magnificent and had a marble floor and staircase leading up to a balcony. A tall man with slightly balding ginger hair was on the phone and what he said was quite interesting even though they only heard four words, Check them out, goodnight.

The man walked through a door to the right of the hall into what was a rather large lounge. There were three other people in the lounge drinking coffee.

Who was that on the phone, Hamish, said a woman who looked like she could be his sister but was in fact his wife.

The landlord of the Garth Mansion inn he said that two people had booked in today and they have been asking some strange questions about haunted properties. They didn’t say so but he got the impression that they could be interested in this place. I told him to check up on them and he said he would let me know when he has some information.

I wonder if they are investigating the disappearance of the three girls we have locked away in the attic, replied his wife Moira.

How could they connect the disappearance of the girls to us, the police didn’t have a clue. We were very careful not to leave anything that might be helpful to them, said the larger of the two men sat on the settee.

It may just be a coincidence, we will wait and see what he finds out and if there is any doubt you two boys can deal with them.

It will be a pleasure Father, said both men together.

In the mean time I want you to collect the extra payments from all our tenants; they have been told the extra ten pounds a month is to cover the rise in insurance premiums, due to the fact that there have been a few claims on the policy lately. They should each give you one hundred and twenty pounds each for the next year in advance.

I didn’t know there had been an increase in the insurance premiums.

That’s strange neither do I, he said laughing.

John and Melody left the Lounge and went to the attic but remained invisible. The attic they found had been split into three; one quarter was used for storage, one quarter had been converted into a bedroom with a roof light. Three girls were in this room each lying on a single bed. They were all apparently asleep but when Melody checked them she found they were drugged or in some sort of trance.

Beside each bed was a small locker on the top of which was a water pitcher and glass both made of plastic. There was no sign of food or of their personal possessions. The three girls were naked and covered by a thin quilt, they each had one pillow. Melody looked at them quickly and they appeared to have been unharmed when they were taken.

As they appeared fine John said that they would leave things as they were for the moment as removing the girls would only draw attention to them. If they freed the girls the family would only kidnap others and hide them somewhere else. The storage area was at the centre of the attic and accessed through the bedroom. The far side of the storage area and taking up half of the attic space was a Satanic Temple.

The walls as usual were covered in paintings depicting strange scenes and creatures. There was an altar covered by a deep red cloth and behind the altar and across the full width of the attic was a black cloth covered by stars, planets and moons. There was no silverware or candles present at this time.

The second floor was the servant’s quarters and they found that three rooms of six were in use though there were no servants in their rooms at the moment. The first floor had five bedrooms all with their own toilet and bathroom. The largest room was the master bedroom then there were two rooms for the son’s and one which was obviously the girls bedroom when she was home the final room was a guest room. There were a couple of large cupboards on the landing, one for linen and one for cleaning equipment.

The ground floor consisted of the lounge which they had already seen, a study, sitting room, dining room and kitchen with a built on utility room used mostly for laundry work. This house is quite substantial thought John; they certainly do not deprive themselves of anything. It was then that they heard the telephone ringing and Hamish came into the hall to answer it. They could only hear one end of the conversation of course.

From what they heard it was a report from the manager of the hotel who had checked them out. After replacing the receiver Hamish returned to the lounge.

Well what did he have to say, said Moira?

Not a great deal, apparently they are what they say they are, owners of a photographic company however there appear to be several times when they have been away from their business lately.

What has that got to do with it?

On the surface not a great deal but the times they have been away have corresponded to several covens being broken up and a lot of people being prosecuted. This of course could be a coincidence though I doubt it

So what do you think these people are?

I think that they may be undercover police with considerable knowledge of the occult.

Do you think we should get rid of them just in case they have come here to investigate the missing girls?

We may have to take that road but for the moment keep them under observation and if they look like they are involved then we will act accordingly.

All right the boys can deal with those two, now how are we getting on with obtaining the silverware that we will need to raise Bridie McDonall.

The older of the son’s spoke up and told them that he had found a small church about ten miles away that keep their silverware on show and it would be easy to steal. By now John and Melody had heard enough to tell what they were up against so they decided to leave the house and have a look at the hill the burning took place at. They were however quite impressed with Hamish who had deduced reasonably accurately what they really were. Of course he had no idea as to their capabilities or he wouldn’t have allowed his sons to be involved.

The stood at the bottom of the hill which looked just like all the other hills they had seen, it was quite unremarkable. There was an observation point with a glass covered account of the events that had taken place there in the seventeenth century, and little else. They decided there was nothing to be gained by looking around the area and any evidence of the burning had long since disappeared.

I wonder where they buried Bridie, said John.

Nowhere, they would have kept the fire going until all trace of the witch was destroyed.

I thought that people who had been executed were buried in a lime pit.

That was usually correct but in the case of witches they did not want anything left of them in case they rose up as one of the undead and took revenge.

    CHAPTER 3

They decided to transport themselves too about a mile from the hotel and walk the rest of the way. Then it would look to the landlord that they had indeed been looking at old buildings. They were walking along a pathway that ran alongside a fairly wide stream. The other side of the stream were cottages connected to the pathway by a bridge every four or five buildings. About half a mile ahead they saw two men run across a bridge and run in the opposite direction to the one they were coming from. Something about the men was familiar. Faintly they could hear the sound of a woman screaming.

They saw a woman in the doorway of a cottage crying out for help so they ran to the cottage and Melody asked what was wrong. The woman said that her husband had been attacked by the two men they had seen running away and he was lying in the back garden. John asked Melody to call an ambulance and the police and he rushed to check on the husband. He found a man lying on his back with his face covered in blood. The man was conscious and clutching his lower chest.

The man was finding it difficult to breath and was coughing up blood. The man said that he had been kicked in the chest and head and suddenly he collapsed and stopped breathing. John quickly realised that his ribs had been broken and had punctured his lungs plus he probably had a fractured skull. John repaired the ribs and the lungs and stopped any bleeding to the brain he then restarted him breathing and boosted his heart.

However he did not do anything about the facial bleeding as he wanted the man admitted to hospital so they could do a good check and identify any other problems. He could hear the ambulance sirens getting louder and he stood up and waited for it to arrive. Melody came to the back of the house leaving the woman to wait for the ambulance and bring them through. When they arrived John quickly told them that the man had stopped breathing and that he had given mouth to mouth ressusitation.

The police arrived at the same time as the ambulance and John told them that he had seen two men running away from the cottage but was too far away to recognise them. He showed them his warrant card and also told them that the man had stopped breathing and that he had administered first aid. The police took John’s and Melody’s details and asked them to drop in at the central police station and make a statement later or the following day.

John said that they would be at the police station at eleven the following morning and he asked which hospital the injured man was being taken to. They said that he would be taken to the Eastern General Hospital in Edinburgh. They left the cottage as the police were bringing out the woman to take to the hospital.

Did you recognise who the two men who ran away.

I think they were the two sons’ of Hamish Donovan though I couldn’t be absolutely sure, Melody replied.

They were rather a long way away but I believe that you are correct. I think we should pay a visit and see what they have to say.

The two boys were in the lounge and relating to their parents what had happened at the cottage of Marcus Stewart for that was the name they had called the injured man.

Why did you attack the man, asked Hamish.

The idiot refused to pay a penny extra until he saw the insurance policy increase in writing, replied the elder of the two who rejoiced in the name of Bartholomew.

You are the idiot, I could easily produce an authentic looking document and that would have made the collecting of all the other cash easier. Did anyone see you apart from the wife?

There were two people on the path walking toward the cottage but they were too far away to see who we were.

Never the less you had better contact a few of your friends and arrange an alibi just in case the wife names you to the police.

If she does she will be sorry, said the younger of the two, Yuen.

"You will not go near her again, that will draw attention to us, stay well clear.

John caught hold of Melodies arm and instantly they were in the hallway.

We will not name them as they will only get away and draw attention to us. However they will not get away scot free they will have a couple of nasty accidents, now let’s get back to the hotel I am getting hungry. We will deal with these bullies later.

They walked up to the hotel and were not surprised to see the landlord sweeping the pavement.

The landlord greeted them and asked them if they had seen any buildings that interested them. John replied that they had seen a couple that would make good pictures but they would have to do some investigating to find out their history. The landlord then handed them a sheet of paper containing a list of buildings and ruins in the area that were supposed to be haunted. Strangely enough Aberdale Castle was not on the list, now that’s rather stupid of him thought John.

That night Melody decided that she would have a shower and wash her hair at the same time making a mental note to book up with a hairdresser after this case was completed. John decided to visit the injured man in hospital and find out if there was anything else that he needed to do to get him on the way to recovery. Before he left for the hospital John sat in the hotels bar and had a fresh orange juice and lemonade.

He was just getting ready to leave when the two sons of Hamish Donovan walked in and ordered a couple of lagers at the bar and stood talking to the landlord. John noticed that they took a couple of quick glances in his direction and continued talking quietly. They quickly drank their lagers and left the bar. John thought that the boys were up to no good and this was born out when he left the bar.

As he left the inn and stepped onto the pavement outside of the car park he heard the sound of a car revving up. He looked to the right and saw a range rover bearing down on him actually mounted on the pavement. He waited until the last moment and then disappeared to reappear behind the vehicle and then took control of the range rover and drove it into a large tree growing to the side of the road.

There was a crash and one of the occupants of the vehicle struck the windshield but luckily the screen did not shatter as a great deal of the force was taken by the air bags. The driver’s side which took most of the impact, was, almost bent around the tree and John could see that both occupants were unconscious. There was a strong smell of petrol and people began to pour into the road.

Call an ambulance and the police, shouted John and he rushed to the vehicle and started to pull the passenger from the front seat.

John laid him to the side of the road and went round to assist another man who was struggling to open the driver’s door which was wedged in position. He told the other man to stand back as flames began to emerge from under the crumpled bonnet.

Get the other man to a safe distance I will deal with this, he shouted.

The man rushed off and John smashed the window of the door and grabbing the handle and the inside of the door using his power he ripped the door from the car. The driver’s foot was trapped so John quickly eased it loose and pulled him from the car. His leg was bleeding badly and he had a lot of blood on his face from a cut on his head. He carried the man from the car just as it burst into flames and carried him to the far side of the road.

As he laid him on the ground the ambulance and fire engine arrived closely followed by the police. The people standing around applauded and the fire service quickly set about extinguishing the fire. John could see that the two men he had rescued were the brothers Donovan and they looked badly hurt. They were taken to the ambulance after being quickly checked by the paramedics.

O well I guess I will not have to arrange an accident for these two, they did it themselves, John said to himself.

From what the ambulance crew were saying the driver was in a bad way with a fractured leg and possibly a fractured skull. Neither man was wearing a safety belt which would have prevented the head injuries. The passenger had head injuries and as he was losing blood from his mouth he could have internal injuries.

The police wanted to know what John had seen of the accident and he replied that the driver had lost control and mounted the pavement on the left of the road and then swerved across the road colliding with the tree. He told the police that the two men had just left the Inn so they could have been drinking. The police officer made a note of what John said and asked him for his personal details. John handed him his warrant card and the police officer whistled.

"No wonder you acted so quickly Commander, sir, it is lucky you were on the scene or the injuries to
