Medicine Man Images
It was a fine day but there was a serious chill in the air. Southwestern Georgia rarely saw much snow, if at all. But the winter wind and ambient temperatures demanded a coat be worn for a couple months of the year and some years it was colder for a longer period. This year was a mild winter, but John Rogers was used to Florida weather and was chilled to the bone. He had just finished inspecting pile driving operations for a bridge replacement on a state route several miles from the nearest town. The contractor’s crew had left the project site for lunch as John returned to his assigned pick-up truck. He could not seem to turn the heater on soon enough to suit his need for heat. He was glad to have warm air blowing from the vents in the dash. He was warming his hands so he could complete his inspection report and feel the pen in his fingers once again. His gloves were not keeping his hands very warm as they got wet while marking the dimensions on the piling before they were installed this day.
John’s phone rang. It was ringing for a while as he tried to free it from his coat pocket. He finally answered his cell phone and heard a lady’s voice on the phone. It was his sister Ellen on the phone. She conveyed urgent information about their father, John, dad had a heart attack and is in the hospital. I will be staying here with him until he gets better and gets to go back home.
John responded, Is there anything I can do? I am working six days each week here in Georgia on bridge replacements and can’t get time off unless it is an emergency. Am I needed there at this time?
Ellen said, John, I don’t think you could do much at this time, but possibly in the future. I will keep in touch and let you know what is going on and how dad is doing.
John thanked his younger sister for her information and intentions to keep him updated. The call ended. John went to lunch and returned for more inspections of the construction progress and installations.
John was a 47-year-old man that had traveled most of his adult life for work on heavy construction projects, primarily on bridge construction or nuclear generation power plants. He pondered the experience he had a year or so ago when his sister Ellen had called him to accompany her to their dad’s home in Kentucky. He agreed to do so and was to follow her there, until she arrived at his house in Georgia and talked him into riding with her instead. She told John that she would bring him back to his house after they visited their dad a while. He was satisfied with her plan and rode along with her in her small pickup truck. After ten days of visiting his dad, the time had arrived for him to leave to get back to Georgia to go back to work. He would arrive a couple days early and have time to plan for the next work assignment. His sister informed him that she needed to stay with their dad a week or longer before leaving. John was upset as he reminded her that she was to take him back at the time he was to return, and the only thing he could do would be to get a ticket to ride a bus back to Moultrie, Georgia. His dad took him to the bus station and John bought a ticket. Dad said, Son, you now realize how your sister is and not to believe most of what she tells you. She is self-serving and does not care about putting you out of your way to get her desired results.
John said in response, Dad, I realize how she is now, but forgot how she will tell you anything to get things done her way. It will be a long trip on a bus, as they stop at every train track and small town between here and Moultrie, Georgia. I just hope I arrive there in time to get a taxi. They stop running around 10 pm in the small town.
Once John arrived in Moultrie, Georgia it was around 11:30 p.m. two days later. He had to drag his suitcase and carry his coat for seventeen miles from town where he was living in the country presently. The taxi phone was not answered as they were closed, and it was too late to call anyone he worked with. He remembered the trip with disgust as was his feelings about his sister Ellen for a time.
Ellen called John again several months after, to let him know that she was to head back to check on their dad, as she had received a call from his friend about him being in the hospital with a heart attack. John was still irritated with his sister for her prior treatment but put it all aside to discuss their dad’s health and her plans. Ellen planned to stay in Kentucky until their dad was home and doing well.
A week or so later he received a call that their dad was out of the hospital, and she would be taking him home after his time in a rehab facility. He soon learned about their dad’s house burning down while their dad was in the rehab facility. John asked what he could do in support of his dad. His sister conveyed, John, dad is ready to go home but has no house presently. The house was built in 1884 and the wiring was antiquated. The fire department reported it was an electrical fire. His dear friend asked him to come stay with her until he decided to rebuild the house or whatever.
John said, I am so glad you are handling it all. I will come up in a few months or when you need me. I will send money to you and dad if help is required until his insurance company provides funds to rebuild his house.
John called his dad at the number his sister had provided him. They spoke once each week. His dad had insurance but not enough coverage to totally rebuild the damaged areas of his house. He decided to have the house demolished and place a large mobile home on his home site. That pleased John as it should be quicker for his dad to be in his own place once again. John’s sister Ellen had gone back home to Florida after their dad moved in with his friend. She was glad to hear that the house was demolished, and the mobile home shopping could commence. She had arrived in her car and acquired a hotel room in town. Bowling Green being a medium sized town there were only a few hotels to choose from. She called her dad and let him know that she would come visit him and go shopping for a mobile home the following day. He was very glad to hear that as he was used to living by himself and although grateful for the place to stay, he was not comfortable living in someone else’s home.
Ellen and her dad located a great price deal on the largest mobile home, single wide that was made at that time. The new home was scheduled for delivery and hookup to happen in a short duration. Once the mobile home was placed on
