Liela Magnus

New owner of Benjamin’s

After 13 years as a journalist at SABC Radio News, Liela felt she wanted to do something else but had absolutely no idea what. When a friend visited Rosendal to look for a holiday home, Liela tagged along.

“I liked the place immediately and started making plans to come live here. I even applied for the vacant position as branch manager at OVK. And then, out of the blue, Frik de Jager asked me whether I wouldn’t want to buy Benjamin’s from him. Jinne, I hadn’t thought of owning a restaurant. I went off to think about it. I recalled how, years ago, I wanted to pack my red Mini and just go to Clarens, which I never did. I didn’t want to feel regret over not doing something again, so I bought the place.”

On 23 November 2021, her belongings were offloaded in Rosendal. Liela felt overwhelmed: her new job and life
