Maronika and Swannie Swanepoel

Owners: Koekepan Pub Restaurant

The Swanepoels have been living in Rooiberg for almost 21 years – “Swannie was transferred here from Rustenburg in the same month that Lady Di passed away,” Maronika recalls – and they bought the pub restaurant 14 years ago.

“In 1967 it was the first general dealer in town – a farm shop where you could also buy fuel – before the One Stop was built later on,” explains Swannie. “Through the years the building was used as a training centre for the mine, concerts were held here, and later it was a church hall and the clubhouse of the jukskei club.”

As a sales representative for Distell, Swannie travelled the whole region – “Rustenburg, Ellisras, Rooiberg, Thabazimbi, you name it…” He recalls that
