    Introduction

    WHY YOU NEED THIS BOOK

    The Need for Academic Excellence

There is great need for academic excellence today than ever before in Nigeria. In the past, average academic performance could give you your first choice of University and course of study. But that is not the case anymore. Today, there are no accolades for average performance, in other words, having five (5) credits in WAEC/NECO/NATAEB and scoring above 200 in JAMB, might not get you into the gate of a recognized public University let alone reading the course of your choice. The only exception would be, if you know who is who in the system or if you bribe your way in. Therefore, academic excellence is the only option.

Over the years, the rate at which students pass the basic requirements into Universities has increased, but its still fluctuating. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) results of the May/June 2012 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination showed a total of 649,156 candidates representing 38.81 per cent obtained credits in five subjects and above, including Mathematics and English Language¹. About 1,048,314 out of the 1,503,931 candidates that wrote the UTME in 2012 passed. But existing Universities can only admit about 250,000 students. Even among the top 10 most preferred Universities, none of these Universities could admit above 9,507 students due to their limited carrying capacity¹. This might suggest that over one million applicants will not find there way into the University that year, and these figures would keep increasing by the years.

Average performance will no longer suffice, you need to be at your best to make it into the tertiary institution of your choice. For instance, the total figure of applicants for first choice in University of Benin (UNIBEN) was 80,048 candidates in 2012 (with UNIBEN being the 3rd most preferred University). But only a total of 5,915 students were admitted to full membership of UNIBEN for 2012/2013 academic session. This shows that the University had to apply other screening techniques like her POST-UME to sieve out the best of the best. That’s life, no honour goes to the mediocre, but all sorts of awards overtake the excellent performers.

    Why I wrote this Book?

This book is written to reveal some secrets you need to master to achieve success. The success secrets you will encounter as you read were mined out of my true life stories as a secondary school boy in a Unity School in Nigeria. The stories and lessons will highly motivate you to achieve success beyond your own weakness. You will understand why students fail and why they succeed and what you must do in the present to achieve or maintain success in your pursuit.

This book carries high-powered motivation capsules for success. Motivation is the internal fire which allows each of us to ascend to something we have yet to achieve. If your goal is sound and the motivation to achieve your goal is high, you will be successful. This book is designed to motivate parents and teens, to achieve academic success for their teens and pride for their parents. It is an enormous investment in the child of today, the leader of tomorrow as nothing is more important to the future than the children of today. Every investment in them now will yield great benefits tomorrow.

    Who Should Read this Book?

This book is meant for children, teens, youths, parents, guardians and teachers. Every child, be you an adolescent or youth has some success secrets to learn from this book. Excellent academic performance is what is required, average performance is no longer an option for our world today. Like I said earlier, in today’s competitive University admission market, it is difficult to get University admission without excellent O’ level grades and UTME score, let alone getting admission to read the course of your choice. The University educational system provides an array of opportunities to those who are able to achieve academically, except for the Nigerian factor. So a child ought to be nothing short of academic excellence to stand a chance to enter the system on merit.

All parents want their child to succeed academically. This is burn out of a strong desire to see their children happy and successful in life. This is what Zig Ziglar has to say; "Parents can do few things more important for their children than to raise them in a home filled with great books—and read those books to them! The love of reading is caught far more than it is taught. If you want your children to grow up to be readers, then the need to see you reading, going to the library, getting new books in the mail from book clubs or online retailers, and frequenting library book sales and garage sales looking for great, interesting books." Therefore, parents who usually are their
