To Xavier, my grandson, all children,
loving parents and grandparents.
Did the Blizzard Seize That Too?
O h no, no, no! I won’t sleep much tonight, either. It’s barely nine o’clock and they’ve started again! By second-class period tomorrow, I’ll be asleep.
Yes, I’ll be so tired and slowly doze off to sleep for sure and get behind in class work too. Perhaps, I’ll even lose the friendship of a few classmates also. Gosh, this is not a good way to start a new school year!
I can just hear Mr. Bell fussing now. Sam, Sam,
he’ll say, Why are you sleeping in my class? In my class?
Uh, uh, uh.
Wake up, wake up child!
Yes sir, oh yes sir Mr. Bell.
Well, I really can’t tell him why. If I were going to tell anyone, it would be my grandparents or my school counselor, who’s train to obtain information during those counseling sessions without students realizing it.
No one I know gossips about their parents in an open classroom setting, or any other place he thought.
Then a little later, as I begin to awaken, he’ll continue fussing… as I sneak a quick yawn, clear my throat and push that old sleep out of my eyes… before receiving that dreaded, most dreaded detention slip!
Now son, you know, you know better than to sleep in my class!
But oh… if my teacher… only… knew my situation!
Why, oh why do parents do this, especially at night when children need to be sound asleep?
This isn’t right. They know better, surely they should!
But why, why he wondered as he tossed and turned last night.
His parents were really unaware of his secret discovery, but Sam had been observing their strange behavior for sometime, so he took this situation as the perfect opportunity to test those new investigator’s skills he acquired at camp to satisfy his arising curiosity and solve their problems too.
So far his partial conclusion indicated his home had changed from a happy middle class family to a family of uncertainties, disappointments and intolerance. He was clueless.
He didn’t understand what was really going on but from many observations, he realized weird behavior had intruded his home and left everything in a topsy turvy state.
My house just isn’t the fun loving place it usually is. He thought.
But before these horrible intrusions, most days we joked around, played games, encouraged each other, watched television and on Sundays, attended Sunday School and church.
Dad serves on the Deacon Board, Mom sings in the choir and I am in the Kid’s for Jesus Children’s Group.
But we haven’t done much of either lately, every other week there is a catastrophe.
Gosh, it appears that last monster blizzard swooped down, destroyed our home and brought thieves through the night who took advantage of this disaster and stole our household items, the loving relationship they shared, disrupted my dreams and aspirations, and left boxes of tension, debris, nagging and the lack of responsibility everywhere. Confusion, confusion I call it that’s stealing all the joy and sensibility from the wonderful lifestyle my parents created over thirteen years.
Perhaps, this is why Dad comes home later each night and acts grumpy and Mom stopped cooking those mouth-watering recipes we love, particularly her bake chicken, those delicious smelling casseroles and good old sweet potato pies.
Astonishingly as well, family rules have been broken, especially ones about eating meals together, family game nights and excessive fussing.
This is frightful, very frighten he thought as he laid there listening to so much fussing and anguish tones while slowly tossing from one side to the other, worrying… worrying… what’s their problem? Are there other facts I should ANALYZE OR SUSPECTS I must consider he wondered as his eyes overflowed while saying his prayers.
"Lord, what’s causing these radical changes in my home?
What’s happening to my family that keeping my parents so upset and also keeping me from sleeping some nights?
Please give us strength
