Katie

Isink lower in the passenger’s seat of my date’s darkened car, nibbling on my thumb, wondering if tonight’s the night—the night being a naïve virgin proves to be not simply embarrassing…but deadly.

Todd seemed like a nice enough guy.

He’s tall and fit, with golden brown eyes and the hint of a Southern drawl that seems to put the kids at ease at school.

And we’re both teachers, so I figured we’d have plenty to talk about and loads in common.

But that was before he picked me up at my apartment complex twenty minutes ago and started driving God knows where.

I asked him where we were going, but he just said, You’ll see, in a way that was more ominous than playful.

He then proceeded to give one-word answers to all my making conversation questions, until I finally gave up and let silence descend as he guided the car deeper into the wilds surrounding Burly Bear, Vermont.

I haven’t lived in this area long, but I’m pretty sure there’s nothing out this way but woods, woods, more woods, and bears who haven’t gone to sleep for the winter just yet.

It’s the bears I’m thinking about as Todd pulls onto a gravel road leading up a steep mountain.

It winds through even thicker trees than the ones lining the rural highway we just left.

If I run, I might not freeze to death before morning—it’s still early October and I’m dressed warmly—but being ripped limb from limb by a bear is an option.

As well as getting so lost that I end up starving to death in the wilderness.

Dehydration will kill you first, the inner voice helpfully supplies.

The inner voice is a real morale booster, all right.

It’s her fault I’m in this mess to begin with.
