    PREFACE

So why did I write this book?

T he prevalence of obesity has reached epidemic proportions. It is now a serious chronic disease. About 65 percent of adults in the United States are either overweight or obese. Almost half the adult population is trying to lose weight at any given time.

If we keep going like this, there will be serious physical, psychological, and economic implications for patients. There might not be enough primary care physicians and endocrinologists or other specialists to take care of the patients.

Studies show that 77 percent of kids who are obese will be obese as adults, but only 7 percent of kids with normal weight become obese as adults.

I see many obese kids drinking very large-sized sodas at Disney or other parks and would get upset. My husband thinks it is funny that I can be upset at Disney.

I see many people eating so much at all-you-can-eat buffets. Everyone wants to talk about diets, but no one will talk about portion sizes, and this is why we are where we are now.

Is it the genes? There are those who will blame it on the family history. I don’t think our gene pool has changed tremendously within the last thirty years—but our lifestyles have.

Some people say they don’t care about how they look, and it is the beauty inside that counts. Are you freaking kidding me? I am talking about your health. I am not asking you
