Love Comes in Many Forms - Kim Ward
Chapter One
37797.pngT he whole street had been in silence; apart from the odd sounds of foxes crying and owls calling; it had been pitch black. Now the darkness of the night was just beginning to lift and a small ray of light came peeping through the kitchen window; which shone down in the corner of the room. Suddenly the silence of the early morning was shattered by a loud, piercing scream, as if someone was being murdered! It echoed throughout the house!
The only human occupants in the house were two women. Michelle, the more maternal one of the couple, who had a good job and took life more seriously; was the first to be woken by the noise. She nudged Sophie, who had been sleeping soundly. Sophie was lucky to still have her job. She failed to respond, that’s when Michelle decided to shout straight in her ear! That got the reaction Michelle had wanted.
It’s Tabby. I think something’s wrong with her!
Michelle looked very concerned. Without hesitation the two of them rushed down the stairs. Michelle was in her pyjamas, but Sophie hadn’t taken her clothes off from the night before and still stunk of booze and cigarette smoke.
They entered the kitchen very cautiously; their ears became fixed on the terrifying sounds. Their eyes surveyed the kitchen; which looked quite sparse. It consisted of dark wooden cabinets and a dining table with four chairs. Then all eyes were fixed where the noise was coming from. Michelle and Sophie made their way towards the cat bed in the corner. The stone, tiled floor felt freezing under their bare feet.
In the large brown cat bed was a rather big tabby cat, with a very swollen stomach. Michelle and Sophie hadn’t been very unimaginative when naming the cat, so to them it made sense to call her Tabby. By naming her the women felt she belonged to them now. They had recently been feeding her, thinking she was just a stray, then she made herself at home in their kitchen. That’s when Michelle bought the cat bed for Tabby.
It had been nine long weeks for Tabby and it was nearing the end. Her contractions had begun many hours before. Only now they were stronger and agonising for her. She could not take it any longer! Tabby’s instincts knew it was time.
Tabby was clearly in distress, the sounds she was making were high pitched; like a howling wolf, in the wild. It was not obvious to the women when they gave Tabby a home, that she was pregnant; she was very under weight and neglected. The women had fed her well since then. Still not realising what the problem was with Tabby, they just didn’t know what to do or how to help her.
I’m going to call for a vet!
Michelle blurted out worryingly.
No we don’t need a vet!
responded Sophie, I’ve seen this before! It should have clicked when she was getting fat! She’s giving birth.
Tabby clawed at her bed angrily, showing signs of distress. The pain was just too much for Tabby to bear, she gave out a piercing MEOW. Her body squeezed with the pain. Then without warning she gave out another loud MEOWWW. Something seemed to be coming out of her rear end. A sticky, sack containing a very tiny black kitten had been pushed out. Only then did Michelle realise what was causing Tabby so much distress. Sophie knew she was right, and she was very happy for Tabby.
Tabby instinctively knew what to do. She licked the sack covering the kitten; which looked like a little pink, wet rat, until Tabby licked all the mucus and slimy mess from the kitten. It was so tiny and helpless, too weak to even meow. Tabby nudged it towards her teats, which were engorged with milk, ready for the new arrivals.
The newborn kitten’s eyes were closed, so she struggled at first, but with a little encouragement from Tabby the kitten soon found a nipple to latch onto.
A few minutes later another howling sound was followed by another black kitten. Tabby cleaned this one the same way she had the first. It was another female. The tiny helpless
