    CHAPTER 1

Sapphire is in love with Landon, her enemy, but she didn’t think she could stand to tell him how she felt. She knew that it would be hard to make sure that she avoided Landon just so she could try to get her feelings buried into a box that is locked to never be opened again. Sapphire knew that Landon would know if something was up with her, especially if she doesn’t act like he is her enemy. Landon had been her enemy for so long that she had forgotten the time before they were enemies, the time when they were best friends right before seventh grade. There was an argument, a physical fight, and silence for half of the year. When they had finally talked again it was when Sapphire had confronted Landon for what he had done and they ended their friendship.

Sapphire, in the heat of the moment, had yelled, Maybe we shouldn’t be friends anymore then.

Landon had shakily replied, Maybe we shouldn’t be. That was the end of their friendship two days before Seventh grade had begun.

Sapphire had gone to school but she had to completely ignore Landon, and she knew the challenge had just begun. She had to walk around to all of her classes with a different style, and she hunched her shoulders and looked at the ground. She wore her normal attire but she kept her head up and wore dark sunglasses. However, she knew that the attempt was quite futile because he recognized her immediately and he even arched an eyebrow at her. He watched her like a hawk watching its prey, and he kept on like this all day long even as she tried to be invisible. She tried to ignore his staring but eventually she turned and sent him her death glare, and even though he wasn’t affected by it everyone around him was and that satisfies her.

She hates Landon and his stupid posse but that isn’t really the truth because she loves Landon. However, Landon cannot know about her wolf attributes and that is what she has a hard time controlling at times like this. Her eyes are flashing because she held them back during the glare down. Then she realized that the teacher had stopped walking around but she felt something wet hit her back so she just used magic to dry her shirt. Then she put a spell that would protect her shirt from anything wet, and laughed at the weird faces they made when they realized that they couldn’t make her shirt we anymore. It was pretty funny watching them try to make her shirt wet and then failing because of her magic but they had no idea about her magic. The funniest part was probably Landon because he had the biggest question mark practically written all over his face. Sapphire was still trying to pay attention to the teacher, but instead she was just glaring at Landon’s dumb posse.

She turns back around to pay attention to the annoying teacher walking around the room. The minute she felt something touch her shoulder, she looked down and noticed a neatly folded square paper. She opened it immediately because Landon used to pass these to her when they were still friends, however, instead of being happy she crumbled it and chucked it at him all the while the teacher was still writing on the board.

She whispered, You jerk! Leave me alone!

Then she turned back and continued writing her notes. The crumpled ball she had just thrown at Landon ended up back on her desk, so she threw it in the trashcan. She then started back on her notes because she had hoped that her throwing it in the trashcan had needed that fight.

Then one of Landon’s friends Michael brought it back with a smile and he put it back on her desk as he said, I think you tossed this away by mistake.

Sapphire growled under her breath as the bell rang and she packed her things up calmly before heading out to catch her friends. She was heading to Math after having her Psychology class, and she felt as if someone was following her. She turned her head slightly and noticed Michael in her peripheral vision, she kept walking but she was very cautious and instinctively stayed where she knew that Landon would hear her yell. She growled at herself in her head for doing that on instinct, when she knew Landon wouldn’t even care and he’d probably join in. She felt tears sting her eyes so she ducked inside the girl’s restroom, after making sure it was empty and she pulled out her emergency makeup kit. She hates make-up with a passion but she needed to know how to make her face not look like she had just cried her eyes out.

She sent an emergency text to her friends Katie and Kaylee about the emergency because they would come to help. She made sure to put several HELP ME PLEASE in the text messages so they would know how bad it really is. She had to wait over twenty minutes to receive both of their text messages because they tend to take forever to reply especially if they are dealing with other people. So she waited and then she got their hilariously serious replies and she had to hold her laugh in long enough to read them.

From Katie she got, OMG!! I will be there pronto! I will bring my extra makeup bag.

From Kaylee she got, This is probably a big deal to Katie, so I’ll come help you with your make-up. Did you start crying because of Landon? Girl I will give you the strength to kick his butt!

From Kaylee she got, This is probably a big deal to Katie, so I’ll come help you with your make-up. Did you start crying because of Landon? Girl I will give you the strength to kick his butt!

Sapphire couldn’t help but giggle, even in this dreary, panicky moment. She patiently waited knowing her girls would end up taking forever. Sapphire instantly calmed down when she heard their secret knock, so she replied back with the same knock twice. The girls walked in and gasped at the red streaks running down her face. The concern showed clearly on both of their faces, but she tried to shrug them off. She handed her bag to Katie, sat down, closed her eyes, and let Katie do her thing. By the time Katie was done, Sapphire was half-asleep. They knew that she hadn’t gotten much sleep these last couple of weeks, but they also knew that she would yell if they woke her right now.

They waited until the bell rang that way they didn’t have to wake her up. They tried to watch from afar mainly because they knew she would wake startled, but also so they could watch for anyone that might possible try to come in while Sapphire was gathering everything up. She woke up startled and quite shocked that she was in a bathroom, but she gathered herself and her things up to leave. She walked out of the door one hand holding her things the other rubbing her cramping neck.

She walked in a few minutes late because she had been arguing with the nurse about whether or not she should go home. However, the minute she walked in and she looked around she noticed that everyone seemed to be very nervous and on edge. She also noticed that, even though Landon’s demeanor showed that he was calm, Landon was torn between anger and happiness. She was cautious as she handed her pass to the teacher and made her way to her seat right in front of Landon’s friend Michael. She had already figured out it was a partner thing and who she was paired with made the room very nervous, either Landon or Michael. She awaited her slightly obvious answer to her very obvious question, especially if you’re looking in the way of her demeanor.

Her teacher said, Sapphire for this short story project, you have been partnered with Michael!

Sapphire objected, Mrs. Kamara, I have to object to being partnered with that infinsul! I’d rather be stuck with Landon, at least then I know his part of the project will actually be done. Michael is a creep and he is way worse than Landon and you know it. Just switch my partner.

Mrs. Kamara replied, Calm down Sapphire, I am not changing your partner. You and Landon are my best writers in all of my English classes. I just figured you might like helping someone get a better grade. Landon will be helping Camille get a better grade.

Sapphire said, If I want a good grade, then I won’t get that by working with him! Mrs. Kamara, do not make me argue with you. I am not in the mood for an argument! I will not work with Michael, and that’s final! Either you switch my partner or expect me to do everything on my own!

Mrs. Kamara said, Now, Sapphire, this is a partner project. You have to have a partner to get full credit. Michael is your partner because you and Landon would probably kill each other.

Landon said, Actually, Mrs. Kamara, Sapphire and I both love to write. We would more- than - likely work civilly on this. Besides, wouldn’t you like to see what you get when you pair your best writers together?

Mrs. Kamara replied, I figured that you would be opposed to the idea of working with Sapphire, so I paired you two with your peers with grades that needed to improve. I still don’t think I should switch your partners so I won’t!

Landon said, What if we present our story to the class? Well, what if I present the story to the class and Sapphire presents the story to you and her friends after school. If my memory serves me correctly, then Sapphire still doesn’t like to present anything in front of the class. Would that make you switch us? Look, if you don’t switch us then Sapphire and I will still be doing all of the work and practically writing the story by ourselves. Why not let us impress you by writing together?

Sapphire said, Your memory serves you correctly Spencer. I still hate presenting anything in front of the whole class, however, I will put that aside since it will be one of my stories. I will have to help you portray the story, otherwise you will have them completely confused during the entire story. Now, Mrs. Kamara, will you switch our partners?

Mrs. Kamara replied, I still don’t see why you should work with Landon, Sapphire, you guys have been enemies for years. Do you honestly expect me to believe that you will work civilly together, when the last time that you worked together you hurt each other?

    Landon said, She started it.

Sapphire argued, You started it Spencer!

Landon said, Technically you started it Woodsin.

Sapphire replied, I didn’t throw the first punch!

Landon said, You started the argument though!

Sapphire questioned, Yeah and who won Spencer?

    Landon smirked, I did Woodsin!

Sapphire laughed, Actually I did, but nice try.

Mrs. Kamara said, See? This is exactly why you aren’t paired together! There will be no partner switches.

Landon said, I guess that’s that then huh?

Sapphire said, Actually no that isn’t it. I’m not the same person I used to be Spencer. Mrs. Kamara, I suggest you sit down and listen very closely. I don’t care who you partner me with, but I will not work with Richardson, Michael. Okay.

Mrs. Kamara nodded, Okay then I will change your partner, no problem.

Landon said, I will be her partner Mrs. Kamara.

Mrs. Kamara said, How about Michelle?

Sapphire replied, No, she will put all of the work on me and just sign her name onto it.

Mrs. Kamara said, How about Andrew?

Sapphire replied, No all he does is play video games.

Landon asked, Why can’t be I her partner?

Mrs. Kamara said, Okay how about Elijah?

Sapphire said, No, he will try to do all of the work and I will have no say in anything.

Landon exclaimed, Kamara, I will be her partner!

Mrs. Kamara said, No, Isaiah won’t work either. What about Angelica?

Sapphire replied, She still hates me after I beat her in the Creative Writing Essay competition last year.

Mrs. Kamara asked, What about Camille?

Sapphire said, No, I am not doing all of the work. She would take no part in the process at all because she doesn’t like to write or think.

Mrs. Kamara asked, How about Jason? Wouldn’t he work??

Sapphire replied, No because he doesn’t really like partner work and I will actually make him do it on time and he won’t like that.

Mrs. Kamara asked, How about Lance?

Sapphire replied, Oh No. that would end in bloodshed!

Mrs. Kamara asked, What about Jasmine?

Sapphire replied, She hates me because I beat her in a basketball game.

Mrs. Kamara said, Then I guess you’re stuck with Michael.

Sapphire said, Fine, I’ll do the work and put his name on it, he can stay far away from me. Will that make you happy?

Landon said, That’s it! I am going to be her partner. She isn’t going to be working with that jerk! I refuse to let her work with him!

Mrs. Kamara said, Fine you two are now partners. Camille, Michael, you are now partners.

Michael said, That isn’t fair! Sapphire should work with me! I actually l… like her.

Sapphire walked up, slapped him, and said, I know exactly what you were going to say and I have to say that you are as stupid as I thought! I will ruin you if you ever try to pull something like that again. I hope you understand because next time it will be more than a slap across the face.

The bell rang and Sapphire took the detention slip, grabbed her things, and headed to Art. She made sure she wasn’t being followed by scanning her surroundings without calling attention to herself. She slipped into class and into her seat with 10 seconds to spare. She quickly pulled out her sketchbook and continued drawing the scene that was playing in her head once again. Sapphire had drawn a black and silver convertible with a beautiful young woman in a long flower dress in the passenger seat and a young man, very handsome, in a tuxedo in the driver’s seat. She had a purse with an invitation to a wedding sticking out, and he had black sunglasses and slicked back black hair.

Sapphire loved to draw as much as she loved to write. She was very detailed in everything she drew or wrote, and she made sure it was executed as it needed to be. She wasn’t finished because there was another image with the same people that she hasn’t started on yet. She sees things sometimes and until she draws them out, she continues to see these images. She has many drawings of the things that she has seen, and she has two full sketchbooks full of drawings of the many images she has seen. She has to get them on paper and
