    CHAPTER 1

    Decisions

D r John Stevens, the sixty year old much experienced and well regarded doctor, looked down at the young lad from beside his bed, thinking what a waste of human life.

Dr Stevens was a tall slim person with white dishevelled hair, and a kind expression on his face. He just could not bring himself to turn off the life support system that kept the lad alive.

The lad had been brought in a few days earlier, after having been in a car accident, in which he had been a passenger.

The car had been driven by his father with his mother seated in the front passenger seat, and the lad in the back.

From what Dr Stevens had been told, there had been a collision with a drunk driver, resulting in the deaths of the lad’s parents. The lad himself had sustained a blow to the head that had rendered him unconscious, and was in a coma.

The lad had been given a brain scan, and his brain was found to be extensively damaged, and it appeared obvious that if he did regain consciousness, he would be no more than a vegetable, with no real life ahead of him.

The doctor looked at him sadly and was reminded of Daniel, who had been the recipient of a brain transplant that he, and a number of other doctors had successfully operated on some years previously.

My God, he thought, what if we could do the same again with this lad, then his enthusiasm quickly faded, there being no brain to be had at this point in time.

The doctor walked away, delaying pressing the off switch on the lad’s life support.

He had patients to see, and there were a number that required to be checked to make sure that they were progressing satisfactorily.

As he looked in on those who required his attention, he arrived at the bed of Olive Green.

Miss Green was in her late eighties, and like Edward, her body was slowly breaking down, she was slim and petite, but with a brain that was still in good working condition, and working better than many younger ones.

Olive had lived a sedentary type of life, working firstly as a librarian, then as a teacher of lower grade children.

Would Olive be willing to have her brain transplanted, Dr Stevens wondered. Putting a female brain into a male body would be interesting, and may prove advantageous to mankind, and perhaps a better understanding between the male and female of the species, he thought.

He really did not think Miss Olive Green would willing to have her brain put into the body of a young male, but he would ask anyway.

Since the first brain transplant, which had been successful to a degree, though the young man met his demise when his body could not contain the brain’s development, there had been more operations of this type, by the Japanese, Chinese, Russians and Americans, all of which failed, but, putting a female brain into a male body, was something else, and an outcome, if successful, could not be foreseen, and that, made the idea all the more appealing as well as intriguing.

Dr Stevens, cleared his throat ‘Good morning Olive. How are you today?’ he asked, trying to be cheerful.

Olive, coincidentally, was in the same depressing room that Edward had been before and after he had been given his new body. The room, still with its dark green walls and white ceiling, made Dr Stevens wonder if it was an omen.

‘About as good as I look’ Olive replied icily.

    Olive looked positively awful.

‘Do you want the good news or the bad news first?’ the doctor asked.

‘The bad news, then I will have something to look forward to’ Olive replied.

‘As you wish Olive’ and Dr Stevens paused before proceeding ‘The tests we took, were not good, and indicates that there is not much time left.’

‘That is not surprising doctor, with all the aches and pains that rack my poor old frame. In fact, I am looking forward to some peace, free from pain in the next life. Now, what’s the good news?’ she said curtly.

‘Well Olive, I said good news, but you may not think it so, and may well reject my proposal’ and again the doctor paused.

‘Go on doc, don’t keep me in suspense’ Olive said, a little irritated at the doctor drawing out what he wanted to say.

‘Remember some years ago, a young man had an old experienced brain transplanted into his body?’

‘Yes, yes, get on with it, will you’ Olive said.

Dr Stevens explained about Edward, the lad, and the transplant.

‘Well, Olive, a similar circumstance has occurred’ and he went on to explain about the brain damaged lad.

‘What I am trying to say, Olive, is, that you have only a little time left, do you wish to take the opportunity to have a similar operation, taking in mind that the recipient is a male. I will not ask you to make a decision right away, but I would like you to think about it.’

Olive was stunned, and found it difficult to comprehend what the doctor had proposed, and just nodded, indicating that she would think about it.

Dr Stevens left, after saying that he would see her later that day, and again the next morning.

Olive lay back on her bed, and once she had calmed down, began to think about it.

Had the doctor asked if she would have her brain transplanted into the body of a young female, she would have jumped at the chance, but to have it put into the body of a young male, needed some thought, and a great deal of thought too.

Olive tried to imagine what it would be like to have a male body, and the problems that would inevitably arise, like walking into a ladies toilet instead of into the gents.

There was the body functions too, but maybe that would be as intriguing as it would be perhaps, embarrassing.

It was all too much to think about it at the moment, and her body informed her that it was time to sleep, and that is just what she did.

It was Dr Stevens who woke her later that day ‘No doubt you have not yet made up your mind, Olive. I can understand how difficult it would be.’

‘Yes, there was much to think about, and I would like to leave it until the morning before making a decision, doctor, but at this moment, I would not say no, for I find the thought, most intriguing’ Olive stated.

The doctor was surprised that Olive had not rejected it completely, and left feeling that there might just be a chance she would agree.

The next morning, when Dr Stevens visited Olive, she looked to be in a better frame of mind, and asked if she had made a decision.

‘Yes, doctor, I have’ she replied, her wrinkled face looking less strained than usual.

‘Well, what is it Olive?’ he asked, eager to know the answer.

‘The answer is yes. I am not ready to die, although my body might think so. I would have preferred a female body for my brain, but a male one will have to do, and I might well find that interesting’ Olive replied and gave a quiet chuckle to herself.

‘We should not get ahead of ourselves, Olive, I have yet to get a team of doctors together, and I cannot guarantee the outcome. We have been successful before, and others have failed. It might be different with each person. I will leave you now, to make some phone calls, and return when I have some answers.

While the doctor was gone, Olive became more excited at the prospect of having another life, albeit in the body of a young male.

It was the following day when she next saw Dr Stevens, and he informed her that he had arranged for the same doctors that had operated on Edward and Daniel du Bois, for the operation, and he was really pleased about that, for he knew that they would be aware of what was ahead of them, having been through it before.

The doctors themselves were very keen, because other countries had failed with their efforts, and to have two successful operations of this kind, would place them at the top of the medical world, not to mention the extra money they would be able to command.

The operation was scheduled to take place in three days, giving Olive time to change her mind, but Olive had no intention of doing so.

‘I have arranged for an eminent psychologist to see you before the operation. She may be able to give you some idea of what is to come, should the operation prove a success. Her name is Nina Zeibermann.

Nina helped Daniel through the early stages after the operation, and they became great friends. She will be invaluable to you, that, I am sure’ Dr Stevens said, giving Olive renewed confidence.

The very next morning, a smiling Nina Zeibermann, a short woman in her fifties, who kept herself in good shape, and was probably the world’s leading psychologist, and revered by all who knew her, came to visit Olive, on Dr Stevens’ request.

When Dr Zeibermann had been told of the probable brain transplant, she was eager to meet Olive.

Olive liked Nina the minute they met, and instinctively knew that they would get along.

‘I believe that Dr Stevens told you that I knew Daniel du Bois’ Nina said.

‘Yes, and also that you were very good friends. I am happy to have you give me advice. Although I am excited to be having this operation, I am terrified, not of dying, but of it being successful. I hope you will tell me all you know of Daniel, and how he adjusted to a new body’ Olive said.

‘I will do my best, Olive, and I want you to know that I will be with you all the way’ then paused ‘before and after the operation. I will tell you as much as I can about Daniel, how his brain developed, how he managed to deal with it, and how his life panned out, but that, I think should wait until after the operation’ Nina stated.

‘That is fine with me, Nina. May I call you Nina?’

‘Yes, I would like you to do so. Friendliness brings out the best in people.’

Olive smiled and gave a nod.

‘Although I know about Daniel, and how he dealt with his new body, this is completely different. An experienced female brain in a male body is something unique, and I have nothing to guide me, but don’t worry, we will be fine’ Nina said, and gave Olive’s hand a squeeze.

Olive felt happier with Nina there, knowing that she would know how to proceed following the operation, providing it was successful, of course.

‘Now, I think it would be helpful if you told me about yourself, your life experiences, what makes you happy, and what doesn’t. Knowing all this may help in making the right decisions later on.

Now, I assume you will you choose a new name for a new life! Nina said.

‘Of course, I will need a male name, and I have chosen Oliver, and I see no reason to change my surname from Green. This means that my name will change only slightly, and easy for me to remember. I do not know what the poor lad’s name is, and I think it best that it remains like that.

‘I think that your slight name change is a good idea, but maybe you should choose one for the operation. Like Daniel, once the media gets wind of it, you will be hounded for interviews, and you can revert to Oliver Green at a later stage when all the fanfare has died down’ Nina suggested.

‘Now that’s what I call thinking’ a smiling Olive said ‘I most certainly do not wish to go around as a curio or a celebrity, but, what I want to do after the operation, I have no idea at this stage, and may need some help in that direction.’

‘We will look at that after the operation, Olive. By the way, I have asked Dr Stevens if I could be here for the operation, and he has agreed, and said that I could watch it on an internal television screen. Being a psychologist, I will find it most interesting from a professional point of view. Of course, I know what a brain looks like, but to see one actually alive and working, is something else. I hope you don’t mind me seeing your brain Olive?’

‘Not at all, it will give me confidence knowing that you are there’ Olive replied.

Nina left and Olive felt much happier having met Nina, and pleased that the psychologist was a female. She felt it easier to discuss things that may well have been embarrassing with a male.

Nina returned the following day and she and Olive had long discussions about Olive’s life experiences, what she might like to do in her next life, and how she might feel in a young body again.

Nina spent time with Olive for the second day, and Olive was pleased just for her to be there, and to take her mind of the operation.

Olive informed Nina that since the coming of computers and the advent of the internet, she had realised that there was much about life that she had not known about, and also missed out on.

Olive, after much deliberation, informed Nina of her one great secret. One that she had kept to herself, telling no other person.

‘It was while I was working at the library. A man who was a little older than me, and who was employed there also, took a liking to me, and I to him, and without going into details, we made love, twice, before I discovered he was married. That was the reason for changing my job, and I became a teacher.

I found that I could not trust a man again. I knew that all men were not like that, but could not tell who were and who were not. I had been deeply hurt, and was not prepared to take chances, so steered clear of any relationships, and became a bit of a loner, I suppose, and got used to my own company.’

‘May I ask you a personal question, Olive?’ Nina asked.

    ‘Yes, of course’ Olive replied.

‘Did you enjoy making love with the man?’

‘Oh yes, at the time, I did, and I felt so happy afterwards’ and paused ‘It was such a terrible let down. I cried for weeks after I found that he was married’ Oliver said sadly.

‘That tells me of your sexual tendencies, and may help after the operation’ Nina said giving her professional experience.

    Olive nodded her head.

Then, quite voluntarily, Olive said ‘I must admit that having sex with a female had crossed my mind, but did nothing about it.’

Nina made a mental note, but said nothing, then told Olive how it had been late in life before she discovered the delights of sexual union, and also with her own sex as well, informing Olive of the pleasures of variety, but giving no names.

Olive felt that Nina’s admissions brought them closer together, and gave her something to think about, and was quite elated that Nina should tell her such a personal thing.

The next day was ‘O’ day, as Olive called it. O for operation and O for Olive.

Nina left Olive to her thoughts for the entire afternoon. She had postponed a number of appointments to cater for Olive’s needs and to gain as much information as she could from her, but there were a couple of appointments with high ranking influential people in the government, that she could not put off for long, and re-scheduled them for that afternoon.

Olive thought about what Nina had told her, and also what she would do, if the operation was successful, but came to no conclusions.

Olive had a restless night, hoping the operation would be a success, and at the same time, wondering if this was the last night of her life.

    CHAPTER 2

    ‘O’ Day

O live eventually fell asleep, more through exhaustion than anything else. Thinking about what was to happen had tired her out, and woke when the duty nurse opened the curtains letting in the l ight.

‘Good morning, Olive’ the nurse said breezily ‘How are you feeling? It is your big day and maybe a brand new life. Let’s hope so anyway’ the nurse smiled.

‘Yes’ Olive replied, a little nervously.

‘No breakfast this morning, Olive’ the nurse stated.

‘Just as well. I don’t feel like any’ Olive replied a little abruptly.

The nurse tidied the bed and said ‘Good luck, Olive’ and left the room.

Half an hour later, another nurse arrived with Nina following behind.

    ‘A visitor for you, Olive.’

‘How are you, Olive?’ Nina asked.

‘Nervous, but I feel better now that you are here’ Olive replied.

‘That is to be expected, Olive, but we must look on the bright side, expecting the operation to be a success.’

Minutes later, while they were talking, a third nurse came in carrying electric hair clippers, razor, brush soap and a bowl of hot water.

‘Time to have your hair off, Olive’ the nurse said plugging in the electric hair-clippers.

The nurse and Nina helped Olive into the chair at the side of the bed, and the nurse pressed the ‘on’ switch, and the clippers whirred into life.

Olive’s hair was soon strewn all over the floor ‘It’s all gone Olive, but we need to make your head squeaky clean, so I will shave off any stubble that might have been left’ and proceeded to do so.

Just as the nurse finished, Dr Stevens rushed into the room, nearly slipping on the hair covered floor in his haste.

‘Olive, I forgot to get you to sign this form’ he said, waving it at Olive.

‘What’s it about?’ Olive asked with a calmness that even surprised herself.

‘It is a form to give us permission to go ahead with the operation’ Dr Stevens said.

‘I will sign it of course, but there is no need really, Doctor. My parents died years ago and I have no brothers or sisters, or a spouse to contest it’ Olive said.

‘That maybe so, but protocol is required to protect us in case someone pops up out of the blue, and starts court proceedings against us, saying we had no authority to go ahead with the operation.’

‘I see’ Olive said and grinning, signed the form.

‘Does this mean you are not confident of its success?’ Olive asked, tongue in cheek.

‘No, of course not. There is no guarantee, of course, but the odds are stacked very much in your favour’ Dr Stevens said.

Olive said no more but grinned at the doctor, who relaxed realising that Olive was being glib.

‘It won’t be long now, Olive. The young lad is as bald as you, and on his way to the operating theatre. I will turn off his life support, the moment before we start, so there is no time for rigor mortise to set in.

‘You will be placed behind a curtain ready for your part in the operation, which will last many hours. For your information, the first one took 20 hours, but may be less for you, as they have all done the procedures before.’

The doctor left with Nina, who gave Olive a wave and a smile as she was taken to where the television had been set up. Nina found that she would not be alone in the room. There were more doctors there and junior interns as well.

Olive was wheeled down to the operating theatre, and the nurse whispered ‘Good luck’.

Olive looked at the lad already laying on the operating table as she passed, before being wheeled in to a little alcove and the curtain pulled across.

Olive could hear low sounding voices, but could not hear exactly what was being said, and nodded off.

She did not know how long she had been asleep, and was woken by Dr Stevens ‘Your turn now, Olive’ and gave her a smile ‘You are going as Olive, and returning as Oliver’ and refrained from adding ‘with luck’.

‘And without having a sex change’ Olive smiled, and heard some of the doctors assisting nurses, chuckle.

    CHAPTER 3

    Awake

O live, or I should say Oliver awoke. It was daylight, and he guessed it was morning. Which morning, Olive/r was not sure.

Olive/r lay there and grinned to himself. I made it, but I still feel like a woman, at least my brain does. Let’s see if I can move anything, an arm was lifted and then the other with ease. This was followed by leg movements.

Olive/r pushed himself into a sitting position with a pillow behind him and leaned against the metal bedstead.

Olive/r found that he was alone in the room, and, after examining his arms and hands, and finding that they had smooth skin, knew that the operation had been a success. He/she wanted to see more, but was still dressed in an operating gown, and he felt his bandaged head.

Except for a slight headache, he/she felt great. In fact, he felt fantastic.

Olive/r wanted to yell out ‘Whoopie’ or something like that, but thought better of it, and instead, rang the bell on the side table.

A nurse came running in ‘You are awake!’ she exclaimed, amazed to see Olive/r sitting up.

‘Yes, and I am hungry’ Olive/r said in a voice he did not recognise.

‘I must inform Dr Stevens immediately’ she said and dashed off, her shoes making a clippty-clop noise as she scurried along.

A breathless Dr Stevens arrived a few minutes later, followed by the nurse.

    ‘Out of condition!’ Olive/r grinned.

    ‘Yes’ the doctor gasped.

‘How are you feeling, Olive?’ he asked

‘There is no Olive here, just Oliver’ the young man smiled, then added ‘it is difficult to think like that, but I feel fine, except for a slight headache.’

‘Daniel said the same thing when he woke, so that is natural. It did not last long with him, so I expect it will be the same with you’ the doctor said.

‘Can I have something to eat? I’m ravenous’ Oliver said ‘which is a nice change, after picking at my food for the last 10 years or so.

‘Yes’ Dr Stevens said, and turned to the nurse ‘Please get something nutritious and wholesome for Olive, I mean Oliver’ and the nurse scurried off.

‘What does it feel like being in a male body?’ he asked.

‘I don’t really know yet, doctor. I have not had time to get to know it, but it does seem a little strange somehow. Perhaps I will know more when I have seen myself in a mirror’ Olive/r said.

‘Can you get up?’ Dr Stevens asked.

‘Let’s see’ Olive/r said, and swung his legs deftly over the side of the bed, holding on to the bed for balance, and stood up, removing his steadying hand.

‘That was no problem. Gosh, it feels so good to be able to move without any aches and pains, and so easily too’ Olive/r smiled.

Dr Stevens smiled too ‘Just like Daniel, up and ready to go.’

‘After I have eaten, doctor, I would like to have a shower and see what I really look like. I know what I was like, but now I want to see the new me’ Olive/r chuckled.

I can arrange that, Oliver. Daniel was the same, and I have arranged a full length mirror for that purpose, and of course, a shower cap to cover those bandages on your head.

I must go now and inform the team of doctors that the operation was a success, now hop back into bed. I will only be about half an hour.

As the doctor left, the nurse arrived with the food, and Olive/r got stuck in, and it was finished long before the doctor returned.

‘I have brought you the lad’s clothes to put on. Can’t have you running around the hospital naked, chasing
