THROUGH THE TUNNELS OF STRUGGLE
1#INTRODUCTION
My life has been a perfect example of struggle. In my teens, people said that women are treated same as the men. But since my childhood my own family has blamed my mother for giving birth to a girl. My elder brother was treated as a king whereas I didn’t even got the place of a princess. My younger brother was also a prince. Harsh and Naksh were the two people in my house who had all the freedom. I went to school, but I knew my studies had no future. My father had a shop of grocery and Harsh would go to help him on weekends. My mother was the only one who was proud on being a mother of a girl. She was the only person who believed that no matter what Harsh and Naksh do in future, I would live happier than them. Shruti is my name! I lived in outskirts of New Delhi but to me it looked like I was living in a village.
2# SCHOOL LIFE
I could not afford a high fee, private school. I wanted to study and had no other option than a government school. Though, all the children in my class were equally poor as me, they acted as if they were the owner of this school and I was just like a waiter to them. I had no friend except my best friend Shazia. I was neither the topper nor the failure of my class. In the eyes of my teachers I was considered one of the best students. Shazia and I were totally different, our religions were different but our thoughts matched a lot. We both knew that our families would not allow us to take up a job and work. Still we gave our best try to make our results good. Our teachers supported us a lot. They did their best efforts to clear our doubts.
3# NEIGHBORHOOD
I was blessed with good people all around me. My neighbors have always helped me and my family. Whenever my father used to taunt my mother for giving birth to a girl, Kumar uncle stopped him and asked my mother to get some water. Kumar uncle’s son Aryan bhai used to tell my parents that he and his parents always wanted a girl, a daughter and a sister.
You should be proud being a father of such a girl.
Shanti aunty used to tell my parents.
Their family always helped us. When Aryan bhai got his job he took us for a ride in his new car. I wanted to be a teacher as I thought that it’s the best profession. No one gets more love than a teacher. She spreads education to all. My family did not support me for this but Shanti aunty and Kumar uncle was there for me. Sharma family and Aarti didi were also like a family to us, they helped us whenever we needed transport to visit our village.
4# SHAKING EARTH
All was going well. My father had now purchased the land on which our shop was, Harsh came first in computer science and won huge amount as an award, our bank account had money as a saving. It’s a saying when all is good, bad is near. This really happened. There was an earthquake that occurred at a very high scale. I was in the school as my extra classes were going on, when the earthquake came. We were told to sit under the tables. Then we heard a sound and the cottage of our security guard broke into pieces. The guard was declared dead immediately. The junior building was empty as children were safe at home. Naksh and Harsh were also at home as they were having holidays. When the earthquake stopped we found that we all were safe. Filled with joy I walked home and saw, that shops were without salesmen, the whole way was empty. For two minutes I thought I had entered the wrong area. But as I moved forward I saw bricks and cement all over the ground, the pond which used to be filled with fishes and fresh water was now filled with red blood and all houses were invisible. My house didn’t existed any more. When I left in the morning Harsh and Naksh were playing (ludo) inside our room and ama (my mother) was cooking food. Now, their bodies were lying under the heavy cement. I had no idea where my father was. I went to his shop, but there was no one to attend me. I came back and checked whether our phone was working or not. It was not.
Shruti! Thank god your are safe.
The voice came from my back.
It was Aryan Bhai, he was safe too. He was in the same tears as me. I could understand from his face that he also lost his world like me. His next dialogue was that his father is safe and called him to inform that my father went to the South Bazaar and is no more. I could not believe it that god will give him
