Chapter 1

THE STARTING

A S YOU HAVE seen the title, this book is called, ‘The Pickle World’. Hence, it is NOT about humans. So, you have figured that my name is ‘Pickle Boy’. I am only 11 years old. I am really, really NOT awesome. EVERYONE picks on me. For example…

Hey look at the Pick-on-a-face! said Deany, smirking as he picked on me, giving ME a wedgie.

That is why I am the least popular among kids like Deany these days. I feel miserable at school and at home, it is even WORSE!

Lounging on the sofa will be my evil, cruel, mean, bad, mischievous and notorious brother.

He is always in-charge of me when my parents are not around (Most of the time). I will be left with my brother, who will watch television the whole day and will not even lift a finger to help me! Sheesh! What a lazy guy!

He will force ME to prepare food which caused me to scald my finger once.

That was a painful experience and I hate my life!

I keep getting bullied, bro-bullied and LEFT OUT!

I am sick of being a coward! I always cower away from fights but this time I am going to show the world that I am not a weenie! I am a Pickle-being!

Today is a brand new day! I woke up smiling as I got ready for school and smacked my lips as I gobbled down my mouth watering breakfast—Eggs and Bacon!

I carried my bag which weighed about a tonne, CRUNCH! CRACK! I think I just broke my collarbone…

As usual, my brother woke up 10 minutes after I left. What a LAZY-BUM! He got ready in a lazy way.

Whereas, I reached school just in time!

Sup’ Gerald! I said, cheerfully.

Sup’ bro! Gerald replied, high-fiving me.

Gerald is a one-of-a-kind best friend who always helps me and gives me food occasionally. That rocks, right? He always stands up for me and fights for my rights. He is an awesome pal and my only friend (I am just kidding).

Anyway, school had just begun and I was in the hall, reading a story book during Silent Reading.

Then, during the announcement period, the announcer mentioned that the school is going to start the programme called ‘Reading Rulez’ and it was to be held in the school library! I got so excited that I nearly screamed out ‘Yippee!’ Next, he also mentioned that the school’s basketball team won Berknar Primary School, 3 to 0. We gave them a huge standing ovation!

Then, as usual, we had to sing our school’s song and on and on and on (Okay, I might have dozed off after this).

After that, our Vice-principal gave a HUGE SPEECH ABOUT OUR UPCOMING EXAMINATION WHICH WAS A WEEK LATER!!

Then, he finally dismissed us to our USUAL CLASSES THAT WAS LATER…

When I was walking across the corridor after English class, Deany McBeany shoved me! All of my books tumbled down and fell next to the water cooler. My books! All ruined!

Hey Deany Mcjerk! Could you stop being such a jerk!? I snapped, flushed with anger.

Oh look, it’s that lameroy, Pick-on-a-face. You want to have fun? You are joking, right? Well you just picked on the wrong face! screamed Deany as his temper turned dark and explosive.

More pukils (pupils) surrounded us as we started to have a rap battle! I started first.

My rap:

Boom Boom chk, Boom Boom chk.

Oh look its Deany, the big bad Meanie!

Who always loves to Pick-on-a-face!

Who does he think he is? Oh, please!

He is just standing beside my locker which is my base!

Then, Deany started.

Deany’s rap:

Hey listen up buddy!

I am not a Weenie!

I am not a Meanie!

Uh… . Uh…

Ha! Ha! Haha! You ran out of rhymes! In your face! I chuckled gleefully.

Everybody was laughing at Deany HYSTERICALLY!!

Wahah!! squealed Deany as he tried to use his hands to cover his face and ran away sobbing.

That was so funny that I nearly died of laughter.

HA! HA! HA! The next lesson was science! There is one thing interesting that you should read.

I found the second half of this novel dragged a bit (due to the inclusion of some fairly lengthy side stories not involving our hero) but overall this satire was a fun look at society & life in the later part of the eighteenth century. Peregrine at times was cruel in some of the jokes he played (especially on the Commodore) and arrogant in his dealings but underneath he has a good heart & he does eventually learn his lesson.
