    Divine Interventions - Mary Pedersen

    A Child’s Faith

My first recollection of a miracle occurred when I was a young girl, probably in grade 8. It was Sport’s Day, as we called it in Winnipeg. What child doesn’t like Sport’s Day? We all lived and waited for recess, gym, lunch (as well as Art and Music), but this day topped them all; we anticipated it all year… our big day outdoors. What child doesn’t want to exit the stuffy classroom, escape the often boring teacher, to just run, play compete? This particular spring day, we eagerly anticipated the buzzer to inform us that the big event was to begin. However, the clouds blocked the sun and the rain looked imminent. And then, the principal announced on the loudspeaker that unless the day improved, Sport’s Day would have to be cancelled.

My heart plummeted… surely not. I had been so looking forward to this day… the disappointment was enormous. Little did I know, years later, I would understand that day to be one of the first miracles God handed me: a little child in great despair. I did the only thing I knew and believed in. I said, God, please move the clouds. He heard my prayer, cared for me, and moved those clouds and the threatening rain. It was a wonderful day and my little heart cried out, Thanks, God. And then, life continued merrily along, as usual. I didn’t give it much thought again, at least for a long time.

And then, another cloudy day. By this time I was married and was working with my husband in the garden; planting and sewing seeds. The day looked promising at its outset, but just as we were nearing completion, the weather quickly deteriorated, accompanied by dark clouds. I should say that by this time, I had been attending a Bible study. I had read God’s word and knew in my heart that I could ask anything, in faith believing. I had a Father God who cared for me and every aspect of my life. I just needed a bit more time to complete the work. I looked up into the heavens and said, Lord, I just need a little more time to finish up what I am doing. I remember the feeling of great excitement in my heart. The spitting rain stopped just long enough to finish before the skies opened and watered those seeds and plants. Life goes on, but then I reflect. There have been countless happenings in my life in which I know I have been guided under God’s hand and favor. Join me now, as I attempt to recall the many awesome miracles in my life. Open your heart, reach and call out for a miracle, today.

    Angels in Africa

I will never forget the day we were surrounded by elephants while on safari in Kruger Park, South Africa. To me this has to be one of the greats miracles of my life. The trip to Africa itself was a difficult endeavor for me. It seemed, and is, so far removed from anything I had ever done. Yes, I’d seen the documentaries on TV: but to actually experience the wild animals, the vast country, the vegetation seemed almost impossible. Even the getting there seemed absurd. However, the opportunity presented itself and I wrestled with conflicting emotions: the flight there (did I mention that I had, had a fear of flying in previous years?), all the experiences ahead. I was both afraid and excited. I reasoned that God was with me here in Canada, and so I knew he would most certainly be with me in Africa. That was how I was able to go.

The experiences were wonderful. For days on end we rose early; that was the best time to see the animals. We were driven in a Land Rover, amazed that we were actually doing this and felt a great excitement wondering what we would see. And we saw everything: lions, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, birds, insects and baboons. I even saw a scorpion. Our driver told endless stories; the weather in October lived up to the expectation that it is the best time to visit Africa. There was never a dull moment; each day was different, always in another place. We saw a country awesomely beautiful, much like Canada: vast, mountainous with many stupendous waterfalls. Our meals were memorable, the lodgings so comfortable. The days slipped by.

It must have been our 7th or 8th day, almost the end of our safari. We had entered mountainous terrain. Our guide was splendid: full of information delivered so well; some of his stories could curl hair, which served to heighten our excitement. He was also very aware of our surroundings, at all times. We could not leave our vehicles unless we were told the area was secure and safe. I felt as comfortable and protected as I would feel at home. And so we continued along, chatting, observing; always alert to see something new. As we drove up a very narrow road, surrounded by many trees, we saw some elephants. The first few began to approach; I began to feel very queasy and uneasy. Although at this point we saw only two, I couldn’t hold back. I expressed my opinion, to which I am wont. They seemed so close and I began to feel hemmed in. The guide, and my friend Charlene, though, didn’t seem
