Chapter One
Rosie
rosie.jpgTom and Rita Parker got married 8 years ago and bought a small house in the suburbs. They had 2 cars, 2 TVs, 2 computers, and each worked, he as a mechanic, she as a part-time school teacher. After 3 years, they decided it was time to start a family and that is when Rosie came along. Now Rosie was named after Rita’s great-aunt and Tom argued against the name as hard as he could. He stated he was afraid she would be stuck with the unfortunate name of Nosy
Parker throughout her life. But Rita was extremely fond of her aunt and said the last time she heard the Nosy Parker insult was about 25 years ago so eventually Tom gave in.
I should say at this time that the Parkers married rather late in life and by the time Rosie was born, Tom was 38 and Rita was 35 and each was rather set in their ways. They both doubted they would have any more children so they vowed to do their best with their new daughter.
Tom liked dogs and since he was a hunter, he always had at least one dog that liked to hunt with him, usually a hound of some sort. He hated cats, said they were useless; they were no good for hunting, for protection, and even as a companion, they were lacking because they only came to you when THEY wanted something, not when you called them.
Everything went along smoothly until Rosie was around four and a half. That’s when Tom’s hound, Cleo, passed away. Everyone, especially Tom, was very upset. He was planning to get a new dog when Rosie announced, out of the blue, I want a Kitty
! The parents looked at each other and then at Rosie. Tom tried to explain they could not get a cat. Cats do not get along with dogs
, he said, as tenderly as possible. But daddy,
Rosie pointed out, You don’t got no dog; Cleo died, member?
Tom acknowledged that Cleo had indeed died, but said he would be getting another dog soon. Rosie would not be swayed, however. No daddy, you don’t want nother dog; Cleo is your dog, I want a Kitty.
Tom assured Rosie that they would think about getting a Kitty with the expectation that she would forget about it by the next day. But she didn’t forget. She looked at the books she had in her room and picked out pictures of the cat she really wanted. She drew pictures of cats and refused to stop talking about getting one. Tom took Rita aside and said they had to do something to get Rosie’s
