    Introduction

Dear reader, I took refuge to you after several trials to speak to you, to solace you, to embrace you, and to associate with you a secret story that has burdened me, exhausted my strength, and confused my mind. This is the story of my life.

I did not know that you are closer to me than I am to myself until I started writing it. Human beings hate the estrangement of lovers because their own children represent the outcome of five senses, but my spirit has grown to the extent that I no more promote the pleasure of the five senses. My spirit deems you, perceives you, and feels your presence yet not by the five senses of the human body. It may come to you to the end of earth, challenging the seas, the mountains, the fields, and the distances. So, my dear reader, the most scenic craze in our life is the one that does not heed or glimpse but the one that penetrates the heart and mixes amid other spirits. I am she—Romeely.

    Chapter 1

Romeely was a girl of extreme beauty with blond hair. Her eyes were black and wide open; her body was thin and of medium size. She was known to be of distinctive intelligence and possessed a remarkable personality while her spirit was tender, generous, and charitable; her smile had reflected great joy into the hearts of the people. It was hard for them to be accustomed to her presence while it was more difficult to conceive an idea about her absence due to their sturdy attachment to her. She had a mysterious vision; for she had spent much of her time contemplating the stars that cover the outer space, wondering as to the secret of their creation and the infinite beauty of their borders. But the more significant cause of her anxiety was the presence of men on this planet and their attachment to it. However, one further secret that roused her interest was the immensity of the seas and the adventures of navigation. Moreover, her personal character defined her as extremely sensitive, lighthearted, always aiming, optimistic, and lively to the extent that she was nicknamed Sunshine.

Romeely lived with a humble family composed of three brothers; she was the youngest of the three and the most pampered by the parents. But at the same time, this girl felt certain frigidity toward her mother, whom she lived with; this was probably due to their difference in age, which stood as a barrier between them. She liked to spend much of her time and, especially, weekends with her grandmother, who was of French origin.

When she was fifteen, she devoted her time to her studies with tireless determination; thus, she became a brilliant student among the elite few of her class and quite superior to all. Such a student drew the attention of the drama professor, who admired her beauty, her personality, and her strong inclination to acting, which made him give her leading roles in several plays. Her performance was so perfect that it made him give her the title of most prominent actress of the modern stage. Consequently she decided to seek admittance to a university specialized in giving dramatic courses in the stage of art.

But when she was seventeen, her family suffered a serious financial problem—the thing that compelled her brothers to seek jobs abroad. Since Romeely was so sensitive, she felt the difficult stage of the crisis and decided to try and find employment to help her parents and grandmother. She did not forget that she should not give up as long as she had her grandmother’s presence by her side to provide guidance according to one’s intentions. During daytime, she worked as a cashier in a restaurant, and at night, she gave private lessons in French to pay for her university fees. She also intended to prove to her brothers that she was serious in fulfilling her share and providing help, and to be able to do so, she had to live in her grandmother’s house for its proximity to her work. The manager of the restaurant admired her cheerful spirit, for within a short period, Romeely contributed to the doubling of the restaurant income.

One night, she returned home to find that her grandma was lying in bed, seriously ill. She was terribly worried and sought help from the neighbors to take her to the hospital. Her beautiful eyes were full with tears, but hope was clear in her smiling face. Her grandmother was kept in the hospital for one week to receive treatment. The doctor told her that she had a weak muscle in her heart, but her case was stable. Yet in the intervening time, he could not give hope for the far future.

Romeely resumed her usual workday and work night and returned home quite exhausted and went to sleep by her grandmother’s side. On a beautiful morning, she woke up as usual to prepare herself to go to work; however, she noticed that her grandmother was not there. She went around looking for her. She found her on the balcony smiling yet tearing. She asked whether there was anything wrong with her. The grandmother replied that she needed to tell her an important secret, which she had kept undivulged since her birthday, and that she would not be at peace with herself unless she disclosed the secret to her.

On hearing this, Romeely was perturbed and insisted on being informed of the secret and promised her grandmother that she will not reveal it to anybody. Her grandmother asked her not to be shocked when she knew whose daughter she was. Her real father once had an affair in Paris with a woman who was a stripper, and that woman was her daughter’s grandmother.

"To avoid hurting you, she allowed your father to take you far away. Unfortunately, he never showed up. Because I was the only person whom she relied on, she had obliged me to take you away when you were three months old.

I left Paris in company with you looking forward to reach my only belonging family that I trust in La living with them, in order to provide you safety, loyalty, couldn’t move to my home until I reassure that you are safe with them. Your mother had passed away when you were twelve years old by taking a deadly amount of drugs. I cried bitterly for her loss, but whenever I saw you, I had forgotten my suffering, which turned into love for you as my granddaughter.

Their dialogue was uninterrupted for hours, but tears fell from her eyes like a waterfall when she had her grandmother promise her that she will never leave her forever by saying, I love you very much, don’t ever let me go.

They spent the whole night together, but Romeely was still in shock, wondering who her mother could be, for she had never been hugged or kissed by her. She instead denied her the right to motherhood. At the same time, she thought about how much she loved her grandmother, and she prayed to God to grant her a long life, for she could bear neither her loss nor her separation from her.

The grandmother, in return, noticed the impact of the shock on her granddaughter’s face, as well as the deep sadness, preventing her from disclosing the second part of the secret, which revealed that her late daughter had been deeply in love with an African American man. Her intimate relations with him gave her the impression to conjecture that he was the biological father of Romeely. For fear that he might be that mystery father, she arranged her escape quickly. For reassurance on that, Romeely’s grandmother had discovered a certain weakness in her character toward the African American people. She felt quite pity for them as well as her blood was flowing through her veins; she repeated this, saying several times by the thing which made the grandmother look at her with searching eyes and wonder whether that might be possible. The grandma recalled that Romeely used
