    Introduction

Three brothers, Jason 2 ½, Ralph 8, Palmer 12 ½ and one sister, Merle 5

Were there to greet me when I arrived.

    Now there were 5 children.

Before my first birthday Ralph was the victim of a fatal traffic accident.

    Now we were only 4

Less than a year later Lucy was welcomed into our family.

    5 of us again

Palmer became a casualty of WW2 when I was 13.

    Now only 4 of us

We grew up, married, had children and grandchildren

Merle became head of the family.

Eventually only Lucy and I remained.

Shortly after Merle and Jay had passed on

    I visited Lucy in Maine.

Our conversations often centered around our missing siblings

Particularly the brothers we hardly knew.

On my return to Granby I attended my first poetry meeting

    I broke down in tears

Trying to explain where I was and what I had been doing lately

    For 2 reasons

    1. my brothers were all deceased

    2. I had finally realized how much of an impact Ralph’s death had on me.
