Paint My Words - Patricia Rogers Bisgrove

    A Hot July Day

Hot and humid winds slightly rustle the leaves

on the large old oak tree in our backyard,

where we have arranged ourselves in the

    shade of its sprawling branches.

Hoping to glean a bit of any windfall

that may decide to have mercy on us,

and send a gentle draft down to our

sweaty bodies as we sit so still,

looking like wet laundry draped over the

chairs and hammock to dry in the summer sun.

Suddenly, out of nowhere it arrives,

soothing our bodies with its cooling touch,

when sighs of relief are heard,

    escaping in unison

from those under that shady canopy,

laughter fills the air on another hot July day.

    A Mouse In My House

    A Mouse In My House

I have a mouse in my house,

    that’s right a mouse!

When I turned on the light

he gave me such a fright,

    I screamed, Oh dear!

    just out of fear,

I guess he lives in my shoe

the old one that is blue,

    it’s just inside the backdoor

in the corner on the floor,

    he can’t stay there

    you see it isn’t fair,

    he must move out soon

or I’ll have to get my broom,

I know just what I’ll do,

first I’ll pick up that old shoe

then put it out the back door,

so I won’t have to see him anymore.

    A Prayer of Consolation

Let the angels put their arms around you.

Let their hearts be broken for you.

Let their tears wash away your sadness.

Let them whisper to you about your strength to endure.

Let them bring you the motivation you have put aside.

Let them take this sad time away until you know it was a lesson.

Let them rejoice with you when this time has passed.

    A Short Prayer Was Said

Piercing sounds of ambulances rushing past,

rain pelting the windshield harder by the second,

blurring yellow, red, and blue lights pulsing,

    visibility comes in flashes

    as the windshield wipers swoosh,

cars slowing to a turtle’s pace

    unsure of what lies ahead,

    finally stopping,

    watching indistinct figures move

    as if in slow motion,

    sirens begin again,

    reddish-yellow flairs marking lane closed,

    traffic inching forwards

as sirens fade a short prayer was said.
