Seascapes - Judith Shepard
Poem
THE SEAGULL
Stubby-footed
Cropped-ass seagull
With a squawked voice
Caught like a burp in his throat
Perched on a telephone wire
Beady eyed
Watching the land.
Powerful wings
Lift that ponderous body
Catch it on each side
Breathe grace into its turgid frame
Until it streaks and soars
Over the potato fields
Like a purposeful arrow.
I look for a moment of grace
When the mind is vaporous
And cool shafts of air
Gleam along my body
Feather tipped
Climbing and gliding
To see the earth below
Shrink into tiny dots and crisscrossed lines.
The gull watches me curiously
Eyes riveted
Matter-of fact appraisal
And then, lifts himself off again.
A hard thrusting effort
Until he finds that flow
Sending him onward into the sky.
While I, growing smaller and smaller
A dot
