S ummer days were getting hot, clouds from the

south were making their way north and eastward and the rains were soon to come. School was out and the time to enjoy the days off from school was one thing Luis was waiting for to ride Baby.

Not everybody was happy for at the Silver Bell mine Senor Benton the owner was very unhappy with the mine operations, the work was slow and the workers were late or not showing up because of what Luis had done when he shared the gold from the treasure he had found with the families at the mine so they could pay their debts at the mine store. Now the miners were free of their debts and were at normal pace which Senor Benton didn’t like because now he couldn’t drive them like before.

Senor Benton called in his two fore-men Jose Torres and Juan Diaz to his office, he was furious. Jose, you and Juan go and find the boy Luis Delgado and his mother.

Si Senor but why? asked Jose a tall skinny man with reddish long hair that covered his ears.

Just go and find them, I’ll deal with them later.

Si Senor we will find them, we take your truck?

Estas loco, are you crazy you don’t know how to drive.

Si Senor, but how do we get there? asked Juan a short portly man with big brown eyes and a thin mustache and a wide brown hat.

With your horses. Senor Benton replied.

But Senor that will take two days to get there. Juan pointed out.

Benton thought for a while. Bueno take my truck but you better not break it.

I’ll be careful Senor, I can learn to drive going there.

You better not break it or I’ll skin you alive under that tree there.

Don’t worry Senor I’ll be most careful, Jose here can help me.

Si Senor I’ll help him I know the way there.

"I have no choice in the matter and I don’t like the idea but this has to be done. Get ready to go and I’ll meet you at the truck. A few minutes later Senor Benton was at the patio where he kept his truck waiting for Jose and Juan and before long Juan came carrying a water bag and Jose followed.

"Good idea to carry the water bag Juan it might get alittle hot, hang your bag in the front of the radiator, get in the truck and I’ll show you how to start the truck, Senor Benton waited for Juan to get into the truck.

Juan hung the water bag in front and climbed into the small stake Ford truck while Jose got into the passenger seat.

Senor Benton leaned into the truck. "Mira, look see that key there turn the key this way to start the engine, then push that round thing on the floor that will turn the motor over until it starts. This is the cluch there and that is the brake to stop when you push it down.

Si Senor I see, but how do you get the truck moving? Juan asked.

Have you drove a truck before Juan?

No, Senor but I have seen you many times how you started the truck.

Bueno (okay) This is the stick to move the gears and always start the motor in nuetral where the stick is now understand?

Si Senor I see. replied Juan checking the stick in nuetral.

Bueno now start the motor Juan push that button.

Juan checked the stick and then pushed on the button on the floor, the starter turned the motor for awhile and soon came alive Juan was so excited that for awhile he forgot breath.

With the motor running and Juan hanging on to the steering wheel tight Senor Benton instructed Juan to push the cluch pedal down to the floor board and push the stick to first gear the gas paddle in slowly and release the clutch out slowly to start the truck moving.

Juan released the clutch too fast and the small truck spun the back tires leaping and Bouncing, Senor Benton hanging on the side trying to get Juan to let go of the gas paddle, to push the clutch in and to put the stick in neutral, finally he reached over and turned the motor off, the truck jerked and bounced over a bump and Jose went flying. Juan panicked and held the steering wheel straight until it came into a stop.

Senor Benton was so mad he jumped off the truck kicking the dirt calling Juan all kinds of names.

Juan!! You imbecile you will kill yourself before you get there.

I know Senor, but that’s the only way I’ll get there to find the boy.

Senor Benton stumped and kicked the dirt until the frustration wore out, meanwhile Jose sat on a rock watching the ordeal trying to hide his laughter that brought tears to his eyes.

After Senor Benton collected himself he approached Juan who was still behind the
