Why This Book Is So Short
There have been many self help
words written. It’s estimated there are over 4,200 self help titles available online. You would think that with so many words written we would all be perfect. In fact, there are more self help
books being written every day.
The power of this book is not about words; however, there are words in it. Written medium has a number of advantages because it can travel over time (you can read this book any time after I have written it) and space (I do not have to be there for you to get the message). So this book has words—just not that many. The problem with the written word is that it is only real for us when we are reading it. We may remember parts of what we read, but very little is really carried around with us and used every day. If you read a self help book, it impacts you a little bit the first day and less every day after. A week later when a friend asks, you can barely remember the premise of the book.
How This Book Works
There are a multitude of reasons why self help
books do not work, the primary one is biology. Your brain was designed
a long time ago. It is estimated the first humans lived about 20,000 years ago. At that time there was no written language and certainly no self help
books. Our ancestors survived on what they heard and saw—and their ability to attach meaning and action to those patterns. The messages were pictures in their heads like Lion Face = Run or Fruit Tree = Food. If you were walking around at that time your survival likely depended on your ability to interpret what you saw and attach meaning to it, and then take action based on the meaning. The path from meaning to action was very short. Something like Lion—Danger—Run. There was no time for reflection.
In modern life, we have reduced many of our symbols to words. Instead of books being a series of pictures,
