    My first attempt at creating cartoons was in college. I made 6 one-panel cartoons for the school magazine. I was excited to see my work in print. I found a job as a technical illustrator after graduation. I created a one panel cartoon starring an impish two fingered, two toed character called Scrag hoping he would be the next Ziggy. I put Scrag on t-shirts and greeting cards. I soon realized that I couldn’t make money selling the merchandise at craft shows. I received rejection letters from various syndicates and decided to go back to school to get my teaching degree.

    I began creating generic one-panel cartoons after my marriage and teaching for a few years. One-panels were easy and quick. I have continued to send Christmas card cartoons for over15 years (see previous pg). King Feature Syndicate bought one of my cartoons.

    I started drawing a version of Mr. Birch 10 years ago. A student teacher was instructing my class. We were having some conflicts so I thought instead of lashing out at him, that I would draw a cartoon about him. I figured a cartoon would be a better way of handling the situation. I wrote and sketched 3 cartoons and during the remainder of the week, I inked them. Throughout the next3 years, whenever a stressful situation arose, I created cartoons to help me
