    On the springtime corner of the year, when the light grows peculiar and the barriers between the heavens and the earth become less like thick lines and more like stairs, Penelope found a heavenly escalator.

    Or rather, her dog found it first.

    Penelope had paused along the path she’d been walking along the hilly trail at the edge of her suburban neighborhood. Holding her beagle, Dally, on a leash and with a cell phone in her other hand to take pictures of the wildflowers (yellow on striking green stems at this time of year), she’d been preoccupied by the dusty beauty of her surroundings.

    The sunset off in the distance was still early enough in its progression that the sky and the hills were filled with light. The clouds looked like neon purple electric guitar strings strung across the heavens above in regular intervals. A flock of birds flapped by overhead in a ragged V formation, calling out to each other as they passed.

    The air smelled of dust and a hint of pollen, and Penelope sniffled, knowing her
