    In the courtyard walls around Andreya, deep groves in the stones had been carefully repaired with some sort of slightly lighter material, creating an effect that looked like webbing. When Andreya had touched them out of curiosity earlier, she had felt that the lighter material that had been used to fill the grooves had a different texture than the stones themselves.

    Everything about the estate spoke of being generations old but also well cared for.

    The air smelled softly of flowers from the tidy square gardens under the trees, which had been expertly pruned.

    Each of the paths to the many doors around the courtyard had been carefully swept, and all of the metal work was clean and polished—the door handles, the beautiful candle holders next to the main door, and the copper-colored ceremonial lettering welcoming guests to the main hall.

    Andreya spun slowly around the vast courtyard of the venerable and cared-for Sizal estate, holding Tivva’s baby in the air.
