Darkness Comes Knocking

I knew that I was different from a very early age. I was insecure and didn’t like the attention from other kids, being just a kid myself. They soon homed in that I was different, why I’ve no idea. And as children do, they found weakness or made one up. They called me Frankenstein. This was my new nickname, not that I liked it. Other names too, like Square Head and Blockhead were added.

The bullies targeted me because I wasn’t brought up in a thuggish family. My dad was a copper; I was protected at home except when I was naughty. Then it was leather belt time. For some reason I never told my parents of my trauma at school. If I had told them then they could have helped or put me in a different school. My school was a bad one and I learnt bad Anglo Saxon words on my third day.

I was name called, picked on and assaulted every day for years. My school grades suffered and I was almost at the bottom of the class. My school reports had Could Do Better on them. That is till my mum got me special tuition after hours and I rose to near the top. I received an award for that. Years of bullying stunted my learning and confidence.

There was singer Ian Dury and his punk/new wave band The Blockheads. His song I’m Spasticus Autisticus was banned by the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation). They thought it was taking the piss out of disabled people. These people were rudely called spastics, retards, dummies and worse. School bullies made sure I knew this song and sang the words to me. Little did the BBC or bullies know that Ian Dury was a lyrical genius. His words were aimed at himself.

Next came another English legend. Joey Deacon. He was an English author who appeared on TV in the late 70s/early 80s. He was very disabled and couldn’t speak but grunted. His friend, Ernie Roberts translated and made cups of tea. He had other friends who assisted. Of course, it was live television and all children were watching it after school. When the lady Blue Peter presenter talked to Joey, he got excited and made noises. The rest is history. School bullies had the ultimate weapon. New words appeared like spaz, Joey and Deacon. Fail your maths test or miss the goal in football, you got name called. People of my age remember this very well. The before and after.

What the years of bullying did was great mental damage to me. The stress, trauma and hurt had an effect on my. I had mental tremors and head shakes age 7-9 or 10. This was from the bullies. I was dragged to the hospital by
