Niesha
Ahhhhh,
I cried out as a sharp cramp formed in my stomach causing me to quickly sit up in the bed.
I was feeling extremely uncomfortable, and heat was radiating through the pores of my skin. My heart was racing, and my breathing was shallow. I pulled the covers back and noticed that the sheets were wet from the sweat that was dripping from my body. I swung my feet to the side of the bed, but before I can attempt to stand, another hard cramp came, and I could do nothing but grab my stomach and scream.
Shad, Shad, get up,
I shouted as I shoved him over and over again to wake him up.
Wh-what’s wrong?
he questioned as he shot up in bed wide-eyed with confusion written on his face.
Shad, I think that I’m in labor,
I groaned as another cramp hit me causing me to double over from the pain.
Rashad sprung from the bed and quickly shuffled around the room gathering our things. He was in a panic and couldn’t seem to locate anything. As much as I wanted to bust out laughing, I couldn’t, the pain in my lower abdomen was too strong.
Ok...keys...keys...keys...where are my keys?
Shad frantically searched the room for his keys that were actually dangling from his pocket.
Before I could tell him where his keys are, another hard contraction hit me, and Shad raced out of the room screaming for his mother. A few short minutes later, his mother came running in the room dressed in a nightshirt, and leggings with a scarf tied around her head.
Ok, Niesha, I’m here now,
she calmly spoke in a soothing voice as she rubbed my back, Let me get you dressed, you’re in labor, and we need to get you to the hospital.
She was so nurturing and attentive, unlike my mother who kicked me out the moment she found out that I was pregnant. I only told her because I was scared and didn’t know what to do. I thought she would comfort and support me, but that was only wishful thinking. Honestly, I don’t know why I thought that she would do anything like that anyway, she never cared about me. I don’t remember one time in my life that she actually held me in her arms and told me that she loves me. Ms. Parker tells me that she loves me all the time. The night my mother kicked me out, she took me in and has been a mother to me ever since.
After helping me put on a new shirt and a pair of shorts, Ms. Parker helped me down to the car. She held my hand and fanned me with a magazine as she coached me through each contraction.
We almost there, honey, keep breathing and try to relax. I know it’s hard but the calmer you are, the easier it will be.
Ms. Parker coached while I tried to breathe through a hard contraction.
Minutes later, we arrived at the hospital, and Rashad frantically ran in the emergency department yelling I need help, my girl is in labor. Ms. Parker shook her head, as she helped me get out of the car and into the wheelchair that orderly had waiting for me. As I was being wheeled back into labor and delivery, Ms. Parker, along with Rashad held my hand and continued to assist me through labor. That night, I gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy who I named Rashad Emmanuel Parker Jr.
Chapter 1
Yolanda
Everything's gonna be alright, Yolanda, we’ll get through this. I promise,
Mike spoke in a soothing tone as he stroked my hair gently.
Even though I heard him speaking clearly, his words were inaudible to me. I was lost in my own world laying in the hospital bed hooked up to all types of tubes feeling broken and heartbroken at the same time. I was in labor and delivery watching as the nurses wheeled several screaming women to their rooms while their significant others trotted along beside them looking both excited and afraid. What should be a joyous occasion and should be celebrated was making me feel nothing but anger, I envied those women. With a blank expression on my face and tears filling my eyes, I stared out the door wondering why in the hell was I in labor and delivery when I wasn’t in labor, and I didn’t deliver.
Shameka, you and your sister, go to the vending machines and get some snacks,
Mike instructed Shameka digging in his pockets for money.
She took the money from his hand, then walked over and kissed me on the cheek, I'm sorry this happened, mom. I love you, OK,
Giving her a weak smile, I caressed the side of her cheek,
I love you too, Meka, I love the both of you,
I reached out and grabbed Tamia’s hand squeezing it a little, I’m going to be fine,
I assured the girls. They nodded their heads then walked out of the room.
Shameka and Tamia are Mike’s daughters from his previous marriage; they were both little girls when Michael and I started dating. Now, they are both teenagers, and even though they aren't mine, I love them as if they were my own. Mike pulled the chair up to the bed and took my hand in his and kissed it several times before resting his head on the side rail.
Yolanda, everything-
he started, but I cut him off.
Don't say everything's gonna be alright again. I don't want to hear that. This is the third child I lost, everything isn't alright, and it’s not gonna be.
I said with a slightly elevated voice as I gave him a cold stare.
I understand how you feel, but you don't have to give up. We can always try again. We can try as much as you want.
I’m tired of trying! That’s all we’ve been doing is trying! What am I doing wrong, I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, and I don’t put too much pressure on my body? I try to live an active and healthy life, so what is it? Why can’t I have a baby? What’s wrong with me Michael? Why can’t I have a child?
I blurted bursting into a stream of tears.
It’s just not time, baby. I'm sure when the time is right, you’ll have a baby,
he told me drying my tears.
I stared up at the ceiling listening to Mike trying his best to be encouraging, but honestly, his words didn't mean anything at the time. I understand that he's going through this with me, but he doesn’t understand how devastating it is to lose the child that’s been inside you for months. I'm a woman, and it’s my job to do all I can to protect my unborn child, and I failed three times now. As the thought of not be able to carry a baby resonated in my mind, tears began to build in my eyes.
"You don’t understand how it feels. As a woman, I’m supposed to conceive and give birth.
